Golf Advisor: Top 25 Most Improved U.S. Golf Courses (2022 #16)
Reviews
Inexpensive course, good greens, slow play, very flat couse
This is an inexpensive course, that I checked out on GolfNow to see if it is one of those hidden gems. It was not, unfortunately. It was inexpensive and the greens were very good. But the slow play made you feel rushed since there were sometime two groups waiting behind you as we were waiting to hit. A few holes were very narrow, which made it more interesting and the par fives had strategic water placement to keep you from hitting driver. It was an OK course.
Prairies golf course
Course was in good shape but water standing on several holes.
Nice course - reasonable challenges
This is the first time I played at The Prairies of Cahokia. It's a nice layout. I'd say it offers moderate difficulty. Hole 9 is a bit odd. It's the hardest dog-leg right I've ever played - a little hard to get the lay of it until after your tee shot.
The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The snack bar food was quite good, especially the burgers.
Carts were in good shape. Cart paths also in good shape.
My only minor complaint is that some of the rough was just a little bit patchy. But the fairways were decent and the greens were well maintained. For the hot rate we got, it was a great deal.
play it
If you feel like your playing pretty good but just cant get the score you want, this is your place! I like to call it my ego-booster place. The greens are very consistent and its short! I drive about 230ish and play the blacks, Great place to play as a beginner but lots of lost balls if straight isn't your thing. Ive birdied at least half the holes out there so it can be done. I recommend
Nice course for the money
Nice course used almost all my clubs during the round.
Fantastic!
I thought this course was in fantastic shape for what you are paying. $24 for a round with a cart.
Greens were in exceptional shape. I was pleased to see how many people were repairing their ball marks and divots. The course is wonderful for providing free divot repair tools to every player. They are located inside the pro shop, at the door, next to the pencils and scored cards. I really think this helps reminds the players how important it is to fix your ball marks.
Fairways were nice and around the green was nice. Good course. Incredible value. I'm surprised more of you aren't playing here.
Give this place a chance!
I was born and raised in Cahokia and actually got to witness this course come to life. I was privileged enough to play golf for the local high school and spent a lot of time on this course when I was younger. My family moved away from the area 18 years ago but I make my way back a couple of times a year so on a recent trip I decided to get a quick round in. I was pleasantly surprised to see the condition of the course. The fairways were beautiful and the greens were in perfect condition. If you are looking for a course to play this one is definitely worth the time and money. I will definitely be stopping in on my regular trips back home
Poor greens, good value
Course was in decent shape, except greens were rough. Got a deal for $13 after fees so can't complain.
Good Value -- Nice Course
We play this course a few times every year....and we keep coming back for more!! It's not a championship course but it has a lot of character.
There is enough challenge that any level of golfer will be satisfied with the layout. It is a mature course with plenty of tree related challenge as well.
Good time course
Shot here on a weekend getaway with some college buddies. Great for a good time with your friends. Bad if you are looking for well maintained fairways and greens. Paid $14 for 18 so its quantity over quality. Depends on what you are looking for. Good for beginners.
great time
I've been golfing about a year, me and the wife generally play best ball from the ladies tee's. Course seemed to be in very good shape, more crowded than I'd have thought for a weekday, staff very friendly. Try a catfish sandwich after your round.
Great day for golf ruined by extremely slow play
Had a great day for golf but it was ruined by extremely slow play due to 2 foursomes in front of us. Plus the course condition was not that good due to very sparse grass even in the fairways.
Needs Some Work
Walters Golf just took over the course and not a minute too soon. I gave it three stars only for the potential because right now its probably a two star course. Greens were generally in good shape, the fairways were awful. Even though they are Bermuda grass, these fairways are way behind in condition. It looks like years of neglect have taken their toll. On some tee boxes it was hard to tell where to hit your drive because you couldn't tell the difference between the fairway and the rough. Hopefully Walters can turn it around in a year or two because it can be a challenging course and fun to play. I used a Walters golf coupon and played 18 with a cart for $10. A great deal for a spring warm up. Carts were extremely dated and generally in poor condition and the clubhouse was out of cups with few options for soft drinks.
Fun course but needs work
Was really impressed with how well the greens rolled and how true they were. Challenging layout with many mature trees that can interfere with many a shot. My only complaint would be the fairways. They are a bit sparce on playable grass. Could use a good overseeding of zoysia or bent. Would probably do well based on the quality of the soil I observed from my divots.
Lovin the Links
Prairies GC of Cahokia was quite the surprise from what I imagined, the course seems a bit old , but well maintained, the fairways need a bit of attention with the barren spots on some holes, greens were in great shape through out the course. Whenever you could find a ball washer, most were filled with a black sludge that reeked of sewage smell? Overall this was one of best "hot deal" values I have yet purchased online. The staff was excellent in all aspects ...Will return soon!!!!
Very Good Course
The course was in pretty good shape. The greens had recently been aerated, but still rolled decently. This is a very good course for any skill of golfer.
Fairways are really damaged
There were a LOT of ruts from carts and maintenance equipment in the fairways. Where there was grass it was pretty good. The greens were in fair condition but most tee boxes were 50 percent bare. The food was sub standard and there were very few choices.
Deteriorating conditions
Greens have always been great. Leaves make it hard to find your ball right now. Even on the green. They could do something to help that easily. Fairways are turning brown and dying, hard as rocks (good for distance!). Saw another reviewer had attributed this to golfers driving carts. I've been playing this course for over 10 years and have never seen it this bad. The "new management" lets golfers drive carts anywhere they want, right up to tees and green! They also let carts in the fairway when there's standing water. I've experienced this in person. We reported it to the club house and they said it was okay. If they didn't let them, they'd loose their business. Hmm. That's actually backwards. Its damaging the course. In the long run, their going to loose business because they are letting them out!
On a bright note, they have a fish fry every Friday, lunch through dinner. Its excellent!
Great staff, fast pace, decent shape!
Bring a bright colored golf ball for hole #4. So many leaves make it challenge to find your ball!
I like going to play here. The pace of play is fast which I appreciate a lot. Playing through as a single or joining with a group has never been a problem, so golfers are very friendly as well as the staff. The staff is awesome. Coolers are always full of cold water, even late! (I hope they wash the insides cause I drink that water).
The course itself is simple, not many bunkers but water comes into play on three holes off the top of my head and many others if you aren't straight.
No complaints about tee boxes, many of them are elevated and far away from cart path.
Greens are true for most part.
Course is flat not hilly.
Surprise of a course!
Deb and I played this course on a fluke last weekend. Was surprised then and today! Great greens, smooth and fast. Fairly easy landing zones in the fairways, club selection into the greens is demanding. Interesting layout with some narrow fairways that don't always demand use of the driver.
Take a moment to venture to the back tees to see what the architect had in his minds eye! Love it!
Tips are right on! I've been playing The Prairies for many years, passing on those same tips.
