Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

A Bit Disappointed
I have not played Stonewolf in nearly 3 years. The last time I played it, I thought the conditions were decent but improvements needed to be made. 3 years later, I was a bit disappointed that the course did not look better.
Stonewolf is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design. Generous fairways but it is a 2nd shot golf course. With plenty of greenside bunkers and greens set at angles. I like to play the course around mid-April when the redbuds and dogwoods are blooming.
Let’s first look at the good things at Stonewolf:
The price of $38 on a Wednesday, in mid-April.
All the bunkers were raked.
The greens were recently aerated but putted well. I think the greens will be terrific once it warms up. They are a mixture of poa annua and bent grass.
They changed the tee markers to pieces of wood and brightly painted on both ends. Looks good. They do have colored dots on the cart paths to indicate where the tees are located. Not sure why that is needed because you can easily find the tees you are playing.
Now, the parts of Stonewolf that were not so good:
The range was closed and the grass looked brown.
Numerous sand bunkers have been replaced with grass bunkers. Holes 1, 5, 9, 14, 16 & 17. However, the grass is very thin or patchy.
Lots of drainage issues with this course. Hole 7 has always been an issue.
Hole 8 had bare spots in front of the green.
Hole 10 landing area is awful. Drainage issues and grass is bad.
Hole 12 yellow tee was bad. The fairway was thin in areas. Unfair pin placement too.
Hole 14 right side of the fairway on your 2nd shot is brown and thin.
They have put some white sand in on holes 16 & 17. Very unusual to only have it on 2 holes.
I would still recommend playing Stonewolf. It is a pretty course and the greens are good. Just remember you will have to put up with some bad spots on the course that will make your round not as enjoyable.
Why old farts should not play on cart path only days.. ;-)
I really enjoyed the challenge the course presented. I loved the views from all angles on the course. The staff should be commended for their commitment to making the guests feel welcome.
Hey, We’re Playing in Winter
Got a 60F+ day in February and took advantage of the opportunity. Stonewolf was in OK shape for winter with some rough spots (ie bunkers/some greens). The course had 90 degree for carts which was nice resulting in a 4.5 hour round. The course rate is very reasonable in winter. The staff was great and range/putting green and bar were all open. Pleasant day and round of golf.
slow and no go
Very slow, almost 5 hour round. Course had no water in jugs, it's $4 for a diet coke bottle at the turn, pin placement on 15 was on a decline. Last time playing here.
Enjoyed this one
I work at a nice course in Memphis, and grew in St Louis, yet somehow never made it here. It was a solid track, perhaps even more than I expected. I'll try to make it bac soon.
Very slow play to start round
Very slow play at the beginning of the round. They started everyone off on the 10 hole, probably the toughest hole to start on. Not sure why they did that.
Aerated greens... no mention of that in the proshop
Bunkers in terrible condition... I mean terrible and totally unplayable. Fairways and tee boxes are in excellent shape. Greens are aerated and sanded. I know that is necessary, but the proshop should mention that when you make a tee time and I honestly think there should be a discount on the green fee. Hard to think that for $75 dollars all you get is good fairways and tee boxes. I haven't seen a course with as poorly maintained sandtraps as this in years.
Very slow
This time I booked a 4:09 tee time and there were 3 groups waiting to tee off at the first. We had to quit at hole 15 which took 4:15 min to get to. Had to wait on every shot 5-20 min depending.
Great course!
I live in west St. Louis county (Ballwin), and to play a course half as nice as Stonewolf out here you’d have to pay at least twice as much!
I played Crescent Farms today. It is a nice course too, but more expensive than Stonewolf and not as well-maintained (tho it is 20 min away as opposed to 40 min.)
Great layout and well-maintained! Has its difficult holes, but overall not super hard. I don’t play the tips tho. Decently wide fairways on most holes and usually enough rough before ob so that hookers and slicers can enjoy this course too. A few drivable greens as well as longer 4s and 5s for the big hitters.
Def recommend! It’s a little outta my price range unless I get a super good deal on a weekday afternoon… but I do look for them!
U can bet you’ll see me there if there’s a day that has a really good rate!
