Denied entrance
I called the day before the purchased round , to inquire about entrance to the Air Force base . A woman said , “Just call in the morning, give your names of players “. I called next morning at 7:00 am , she said , “Oh welcome center / gate is closed today, you can’t golf today”. It was Columbus Day, so perhaps I should have been suspicious after reading reviews . She should have known that it was a holiday when I called the day prior . Not impressed with how she handled it , now I have to go thru the hassle of getting refunded . Not cool ⛳️⛳️
Caution!
I reserved a tee time on GN for two to play this course. There was no disclaimer indicating there would be an issue. Our golf outing was on a Sunday. When we arrived, we were not allowed access to the course because we could not drive through the military base. We were told on every day, but Sunday a visitor’s pass could be obtained to allow for entry. I lost my money as I prepaid. I called the course while still in the area and advised them of the situation. They told me there was nothing they could do to help me.If this course is going to be on the GN app, there should be a clear disclaimer, indicating that one must be able to obtain a visitor’s pass in order to gain access. And that no such pass is available on Sunday. Golf now gets an F and the course should share culpability if they’re going to be on the app.
The juice is not worth the squeeze.
Clubhouse- took 25 minutes to check in and get drinks. Inadequate staff.
Price- for this to be more than $30 should be a crime. Drink prices were $25 for a 6 pack. Laughable.
Conditions - with all the rain the course was still HARD AS A ROCK. Greens are concrete. The greens roll terrible. They are made of super smashed down weeds. The grass outside the greens is US open long, No fringe.
Pass of play- the worst pace of play I’ve ever seen. We took 3 hours behind people that had ZERO idea about golf etiquette or rules in general.
I will never set foot on this property again. Should have asked for my money back on the turn. Wanted to try a new course, and should have tried somewhere different. Hate leaving reviews like this.
First time playing a military base course
Had the opportunity to play Cardinal Creek which is located on Scott Air Force Base. My first time playing a military course. Had to go through a bit of security but they said the course is also open to the general public if you call more than 24 hours in advance (i.e. you can’t just “walk on” to play).
The layout is pretty flat (the airstrip is RIGHT THERE!) so not a lot of big elevation changes. Other than 2 and 9, most of the holes are straight. The par four 18th is oddly routed, though. From the white tees, it played at 278 yards. A long and straight drive COULD reach the green but you have to carry a pretty busy road going by the clubhouse. One person in our group pushed their tee shot and it bounced off the road and OVER an oncoming car!!!
The greens and tee boxes were in excellent shape. The varying sizes of the greens were interesting as some were tiny while others were huge! However there were torrential rains a few days ago, and a number of fairways had standing water and mud on them. But many other spots were bare and it appears there is a drainage issue, mostly on the back nine. The people working there were super friendly and helpful. The pro shop was surprisingly well stocked and we bought some gear as our small way of supporting the base.
CCGC
Much improved. Good condition. Excellent staff. New traps should be ready for play by May. Contact the pro shop 24 hours in advance for access
Improving
New pro and superintendent working hard to return this course to its better days. Whether they get the financial help they need is to be determined. Greens and fairways are good, most traps are a mess. Changes to routing being tested, seem like an improvement, especially if you walk. You can get on the base if you call the course at least a day in advance.
Great Course, Great Value
I love playing this course...it is well maintained and it has a great layout. The front nine is really enjoyable...the four middle holes on the back nine are a little mundane, but the finishing hole...a par 5 which causes two forced carries over a deep creek to reach in two to a green protected by a few giant trees on the left and the creek on the right...is awesome. I think I've seen only three or four divots on the greens thru three summers of frequenting the course...the course is well maintained and the players seem to respect the course. With the cheap prices, I definitely would recommend a trip if you can gain access to the base (it's on a military base).
