In for PSU game
Came a day early and got a great deal on playing the course. Staff was extremely pleasant and welcoming- really enjoyed getting 18 in !
Better than I expected
I have not played this course before partly because of the so-so ratings. I don't see what the fuss is about though. The course was in good shape and well-manicured. The greens were a bit small but that is not uncommon in the Midwest, and I think the price is a little high. My biggest issue was finding my ball with the fall leaves on the ground. I would play again.
Bloomer
Fairways extremely dry. Greens were ok. Course staff very friendly.
Fun Track
Blue course is not very challenging but a great place to hone skills. Greens were in great shape. Fairways were fast and rough around greens was lush.
Good public course
Nice public course. Good conditions, well run. It was a holiday so course was full and pace was slow as expected. Concessions were good. Beverage cart was out, friendly staff.
Neglected courses
These are two 18 hole courses behind the Savoy Walmart of which one will be closed soon. The university doesn't intend to spend money on the operation, the facilities are very dated, unpleasant, staff is unfriendly. The best part of this facility is that it has ample parking (dirty gravel lot, though) and a credit card-operated practice ball dispenser at the driving range which saves you from entering the shop/"restaurant".
Better than led to believe
Think I might actually enjoy the blue course over the orange.
Tall grass
This course would be perfect if the grass was cut better. It’s early in the season so hopefully they will get it under control. We liked the layout and will most likely come back and play again.
Decent value
Most of the people at the course were nice. Fairways had lots of bare spots. But the price was fair, course was forgiving, and it was an enjoyable round.
Better than expected
Tees were nice and level, I like that. Fairways are not bent grass but they are in good condition. Greens have a lot of undulation in them and they are small. Very easy to miss and then there are drop offs on every green. Very hard to get up and down due to the undulations. Greens are very firm, not many pitch marks due to that. Biggest disappointment are the bunkers. All fairway bunkers are now dirt and weeds. It looks like green side bunkers were in the same condition but they have been repaired, however sand is bright white nice looking but very thin to a hard base. A low 4 degree bounce wedge is needed. I have one but left it home. Price is right $34. I would play there again, nice routing. Went to play with low expectations and course was not that bad. Much better than expected.
Bunkers are under repair
Lots of weeds are growing in many bunkers; thus they are marked with white lines. Some bunkers have fresh sand and I hope all bunkers are repaired as soon as possible.
The only good thing about this course is that every hole has elevated undulating green. Tree lines are mature but the terrain is so flat. You may like this course if you come from Rocky mountain area.
With lots of white lines and flat green surface, I feel like I'm solving a simple 2D geometry problem on a large chalk board.
