Sugar Ridge Golf Club
About
One half of Sugar Ridge Golf Club is situated in extreme southwestern Ohio while the other half winds up into the Indiana hills. The border location may be unconventional but the setting provides a dramatic backdrop. The course sprawls across rolling hills that are abundant with wildlife. Wild turkey and deer have been known to roam the golf course. The layout has a few parallel fairways though the trees, and hills give each hole a completely secluded feel. The back nine feels more open than the front, but that may only be because of the ponds and lakes that come into play on many of the holes. Throughout Sugar Ridge Golf Club, golfers will find that the par 3s are fairly straightforward and the par 5s have sloping, uphill fairways that make them feel even longer. There are a few memorable par 4s, notable for both their scenery and level of difficulty.

Bad Manager
Went to course on Sunday 6/7/2020, walked in to pay for my round with 2 other golf partners and asked the manager what the rules on the carts were since most places are doing one person per cart but did not know if it changed recently. The manager then proceeded to yell at me about demanding my own cart. Verbatim " I don't understand why 20 something year olds would come demand their own cart when you were probably drinking beer and wrestling around with your buddies the night before." I told him i did not demand my own cart, simply asked what the rules were if they had changed. He said next week he would charge me $11 extra to have my own cart but for now I could have my own but to keep in my mind that they need to survive. I told him in order to survive you need golfers to come back and my golf buddies and i will NEVER return because of how i was treated. He said that is fine. I would not recommend this place simply on that fact. In a time where we are all figuring out new rules and common practices a golf round should be a small release instead they manager not only guilted/shamed me but really showed his face to the other customers in the pro shop. In times like these i am all for supporting small businesses and donating time and money but his actions were completely out of line. I will tell everyone about this experience and to not golf there. There was a couple of women on hole 18 for a par 3 challenge that said they work for a local food bank and for $10 i had the chance to win money or gift card from the pro shop depending on how close i was to the pin and if i did not make it within 6 foot or in the hole it was a $10 donation to the foodbank they worked for; i had to ask them if they worked for the course because if it was a ruse or benefiting the golf course in any way i was not going to help. After she assured me she had no connection to the course and money would not go to the course i paid for mine and 2 friends shots and we donated $30 to the foodbank.
Monday play...
I really do like this course. I like the layout and the opportunities and challenges that it offers. However, I have played here twice, now. Each time, pace of play was an issue. There is no starter. Therefore, players/groups just tee off one after another, after another...there is no spacing between groups. The other issue is that singles refuse to pair up out there and add to problem. Both times I played I have had to wait up to 15 minutes on tee boxes. (once I was sent out as a single, and most recently I played in a group of 3) At least once in each round I got to a Par 5 tee box and counted out players representing 4 tee times on the hole. That makes play brutal!
PLEASE Get a Starter and a Ranger!
Other than that, I like the course a lot.
Rough
Rough pace of play. Rough carts. Rough course layout. Rough cart paths. Always wet and sloppy.
Rough day.
Rough course. Rough shape. Rough cart paths. Rough, slow pace of play. Rough Rangers.
Sugar Ridge
Good course with some challenging and beautiful holes. Course was wet due to recent rains. Otherwise it was good.
Friendly, "go to" course
While there are some wide gaps between a few holes, my wife and I love playing here. We play from the front tees (age related), and most of the time reach GIR. They keep the course in good shape and are always making improvements. It's quite hilly and requires using shot strategy.
Amazing course
We had an awesome time. Course was in great condition
Butchered layout
The course was generally in okay shape. The layout leaves a ton to be desired. There is so much travel between holes it isn’t funny. The travel from 13-14 and 17-18 is an absolute joke. Those are the worst ones but the rest are not much better. I’d consider this a cart only but not because of the hills.
Wouldn’t honor golf now price
We booked reservations on Golfnow and drove all the way out there to find out they wouldn’t honor the price we booked it at. It was extremely disappointing and the worker was very rude and not accommodating. We will not be back. .
Play
One hole had a plug hole within 2 feet of the play hole. For the weather I will be back again.
Sugar ridge
Course was in good shape. Staff worked around a miscue with golf now and an outing. I can't find a way to communicate with golf now on a schedule problem. Sugar Ridge worked us in.
Too early in the season to judge
The good: challenging but fair layout, played round in three hours, beautiful scenery and wildlife (saw several deer and wild turkey). Staff was friendly and let us out early to beat the rain.
The bad: Course conditions were poor and soggy. Greens were shaggy. Can’t hold it against them in early April.
I will definitely be trying them out again once the weather is warmer to see how the course conditions truly are.
