Although the season is short, golf is one of the main summer recreational opportunities in Maine.
GolfPass releases a Top 5 Public Golf Courses in Maine every year thanks to YOU. We create our annual Golfers' Choice lists by curating the reviews submitted by everyday golfers. We use GolfPass' Ratings Index logic that weights newer reviews and combine it with a course's subcategory averages.
Each course needed at least one review and at least some public access to qualify. From Old Orchard Beach to the Carrabassett Valley, public golf courses in Maine are blessed by beautiful backdrops from Mother Nature. Without a single review in 2024, the Sugarloaf Golf Club by Robert Trent Jones Jr. wasn't eligible this year. If you have played it recently, we would love more reviews from Sugarloaf to make sure it is eligible for this list of Maine's best public golf courses in the future.
We make our Golfers' Choice best-of lists user friendly. Simply click on the photo of each course to learn more about the facility or to book a tee time (in most cases).

Point Sebago Golf/Beach Resort
Green fee: $25-$89
What they're saying: "Point Sebago is a nice layout with great tee options. We played a late season round with a hot deal and enjoyed it greatly. Surprised that the “19th hole” was closed on a weekend and we did have to deal with punched greens. Just wished we knew ahead. Otherwise, the staff was great. We set our own pace. We will go back next year but will make sure greens are in best conditions." - GolfPass Reviwer -
Waterville Country Club
Green fee: $120-$150
What they're saying: "I’m not sure why it took me so long to realize what an absolute gem this course is. I’ve played in a few scrambles here over the years and never appreciated Waterville CC until yesterday. The course’s history dates back to the early 1900’s and has been modified a couple times - including some work by Geoffrey Cornish. The routing is strong with lots of variety and you’re rarely aware of golfers on other holes. There’s not a lot to view except the beautiful woods that virtually every hole weaves through. Conditions yesterday were magnificent. The greens were a little wet, which probably slowed them down a hair but they were plenty fast for someone who didn’t know the breaks. The par 3s are stout but only 2 par 5s (both on the front). The back tees are only 6,301 (yards) so being a big hitter is not required. Lots of elevation changes though nothing too dramatic but figuring accurate yardages to pins takes some effort. It’s definitely on the pricey side if you’re not playing with a member but if you’re in shape ditch the cart as it’s very walkable and save a few bucks. Bonus tip: Since I didn’t have time to eat there, I stopped in at The Gouda Boys just down the road. The Mac N Cheese with brisket is as good as the golf course and maybe better." - GolfPass Reviewer -
Martindale Country Club
Green fee: $56-$69
What they're saying: "Booked this course on a road trip to Maine. Couldn't be happier with our round. Entire staff were pleasant and accommodating! The course is a hundred year old mountain track with nice open fairways, big greens, and beautiful views! There are numerous elevation changes which make each hole more interesting than the next. Being a flatlander from NJ I thoroughly enjoyed playing a course with so many hills and valleys! From the clubhouse, to the club pro to the beautiful 19th hole with great food and an awesome view, this is a course I won't soon forget!" - djrandi -
Sunday River Resort Golf Club
Green fee: $68-$111
What they're saying: "Coming from Pinehurst I was thoroughly impressed with this course, the staff, and the course design. I have played a lot of courses and this was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had on a golf course. Can’t beat the views on every single hole! Overall highly recommend! Only thing to know ahead of time is you may not have cell phone service much which in my opinion was a great thing." - Nwukicker -
Rockland Golf Club
Green fee: $40-$65
What they're saying: "This is a great course! My husband and I play the course at least weekly. Check it out. I’m sure you’ll be happy with it." - Garri

Belgrade Lakes is a definite Top 5'er!!
Dunegrass, Old Marsh, Boothbay Harbor and Samoset would all challenge some the courses in the current Top 5 list.
I've played Dunegrass and Samoset - with Belgrade Lakes on the bucket list - so I agree with your comment. None of those courses received a single review on GolfPass in 2024 so they were not eligible. Next time you play them be sure to leave a review to give them a chance to make the list. Thank you for reading and responding.
