THE COURSE WAS IN GREAT CONDITION,GREENS WERE TRUE AND FAST.
Annoying golf carts!
The course itself and the staff are fine. It’s a nice local course to play for under $50. Unfortunately they have done what some other courses across the country have done. They have decided to use golf carts that turn off when you enter a “restricted area”. Using these type of golf carts/gps cart control shutdown mechanism is one of the most annoying things that golf courses do. If you accidentally drive into one of these “restricted areas” your golf cart shuts down and you can’t drive forward at all. Your only option is to try to drive in reverse but the maximum speed you can drive in reverse when your cart shuts down is .0001 mph so to reverse 10-15 yards to get you out of the “ restricted area” will take you about 5-8 minutes. It may be easier to try to get out and push the cart if you have some friends to help you. What makes this really awful is that the “restricted areas” are not marked at all by signs, stakes, ropes or anything so you have no idea where these “restricted areas” are. The cart does not give you any kind of countdown or warning that your cart is going to shut down. And the gps the carts use is not accurate in some areas on the course so while driving in the fairway (not cart path only) and on the cart path itself my cart turned off. If management at Fairway Hills or any other golf courses actually read this please get rid of this gps cart control shutdown thing. We aren’t 5 year olds. Most of us are capable of driving the carts where we’re supposed to. If you do insist on using the gps cart control shutdown thing please try to make the carts more user friendly by 1) making sure the gps is accurate and doesn’t shut the cart down in the fairway or the cart path 2) making sure the “restricted areas” are roped off or marked very well so people know where they are 3) having a countdown or timed warning that your cart will shut down so people have a chance to escape the dreaded “restricted area” before the cart shuts down and 4) allowing people to drive in reverse at the normal speed so if they do get caught in the terrible “restricted areas” they can actually get out quickly and not slow down pace of play.
Fairway Hills
Short course; fairways so-so; greens and sand traps OK. The ground here is very hard, so balls go a bit further than you expect. Starter was great and got me out early.
Favorite place for quick 18 holes and practice.
Short but challenging layout. Staff members are always helpful and friendly. Easy to book tee times during the week and much less crowded than weekend. Great “First Tee” program fir kids also.
Greens aerated without warning
Nothing on GolfNow indicated that the greens had been aerated and sanded 5 days previously. The greens still rolled ok, but there was tons of sand on them and they were pretty bumpy. The rest of the course was in decent shape - you don’t come to Fairway Hills for great conditions. The layout is short (I only hit my driver 3 times) and quirky. It helps if you know where you’re going. The other complaint was that 4 of the 6 par 3’s played 125 yards. The other two were 135 and 155. Not much variety, especially when you have 6 to play. Otherwise we got around in just over 4 hours in the third group of the morning.
Course is in decent shape. Should get better as we approach summer though.
