Fun Course!
The first time I played PB Dye I was not impressed, but that must have been my mood at the time because I thoroughly enjoyed my round yesterday. I rated the course conditions as average but to be fair it is February. The course has a lot of carries and blind shots that cause consternation for first timers and a lot of bunkers designed to catch balls that are mis-hit. I expect the more that I play there, the more that I will be playing a chess game with the course. Check out the Players Club offer. If I lived closer I'd be all over that.
Great Course Even in the Winter
I really love playing PB Dye. The course is very well laid out, with a challenge on almost every hole. The greens can be tricky to read, and you have to focus more on speed than line on your putts. Winter greens are often a bit bumpy as these greens were on February 25, but you expect that for winter golf. The fairways are generously wide but very sloping; you have to think which side of the fairway to hit into to make sure you get a good roll towards the green. One word of caution: It is very easy to hit into the group ahead of you because most fairways have a hill that your drive can carry. It's wise to drive ahead to make sure the fairway is clear before hitting your drive.
Be prepared to wait
In their effort to fill as many slots as possible and in the least amount of time, we waited on every tee shot and often in the fairway. A 5 1/2 hour round takes the shine off it. Plus, the greens were clearly not ready for the onslaught of golfers. I hope the damage that may have been done is not permanent.
Number one choice in DMV
P B Dye is my number 1 choice in DMV when the price is right. The weather was perfect yesterday when I played and the pace was pretty good - 4 hours and 10 minutes. Only complain that I have is green condition.
Awesome course.
I highly recommend this course for every level players. This course plays very different from each tee box and if you are low handicap, try the back tee! The PB Dye staffs are always pleasure to deal with and food is like 5 star restaurant! Looking forward to go back soon.
Golf in February - What's not to like?
P.B. Dye is a good test of golf. I played with a young guy from the tips and won't be doing that anymore - it is just too long for someone 60. Even so I enjoyed the golf and the course was in as good shape as can be expected for the middle of February. The layout here, along with the elevation changes, not to mention the wind, made the course tough. When the wind blows here you need two and three clubs more on some uphill approaches. And you must get off the tee well to make pars, or you'll have a three wood approach to deal with. All around good challenge and not for beginners.
Very decent course
When I for the first time played in this course with my friend, I didn't like it at all so for a long time I avoided going there.
Very recently I went there. I found it a very decent course and I enjoyed it very much. My skill must have been improved because I felt it fairly easy. Since that time I went there two more times and the course looks like my home course for the time being. During winter, green fee is reasonable especially after 2:00 p.m.
P B Dye designed the course very well. I may keep going to there for a while
Fun Round of Golf
First time playing here. Considering it is winter, course condition was good. Greens still showing aeration scars. Bunker sand could be better. It was cart path only despite dry course. I enjoyed the course layout. There are a lot of blind spots so for a first timer it was a challenge. It helped that the course is pretty wide open so I usually did not end up in a bad position. Not many other golfers despite being a Friday with decent weather. Both the cart and cart paths were excellent. Clubhouse seemed nice although didn't spend any time in there. Overall nice course and will definitely play again.
Work to be done
Generally, this course was fine with only two exceptions.
Greens and bunkers:
Greens were airated and sanded which, normally, is something we all deal with. The greens here however, were near bare in most areas. Overall, they were just ugly, even for winter conditions. Especially during such a warm winter.
Bunkers, again, just not what I expected from PB Dye. The bunkers were poorly maintained with numerous weeds clumps, washouts and debris.
Otherwise this course was fun to play and I still recommend to those who haven't played here.
Nice course
First time I played this course, due to getting greens fee at about half price from Golfnow. It's winter, but the course was in pretty good shape. It's a very easy course from the tee boxes, wide open on almost every hole. Very few trees, water, or traps to deal with. The challenge is the shot to the greens. Even though the greens are very large, they have a lot of angulation. If you miss the green, expect trouble, since most are elevated. If you have a good short game, you should score well. I would love to play here again, but not at their normal fees, too high for me.
PB Dye GC - good value
The course is located on a very nice property with water, elevation changes, and big greens. There is adequate space between fairways with no back and forth layouts. This is a very good place to play if you use it the correct tee boxes for your game.
It looks like the management has started a long overdue grounds cleanup. So far, the work has really helped improved the track's look and sight lines. The course is now up to its intended standards and should only get better from there.
The only down side is that the course isn't walkable.
Don't die on PB
I played here a couple times and the last time was actually towards the fall. I will tell you it is one of the prettiest places to play with the foliage emanating in the backdrop. There were "bright red" trees peaking out and made for an amazing view.
The first hole can get you if you don't listen to the starter. They give you the correct aim point which helps a lot. the fairways seems to slope one way or another.
The course if truly fun to play on and no better two finishing holes #9 & #18. Absolutely breath taking. Coming into #9 green is a real challenge as you have a narrow throat to come into. Green side bunkers await your arrival and if you hit it thin your ball will become a scuba ball in the green side water.
The greens are pretty fast which is enjoyable to putt on. Go out and enjoy this course. It will have you coming back for more.
Gone Downhill!!
Played in 2000 and course was immaculate. Played March 2016 and it was horrible, IMO. First, pro shop did not have the correct rate for play the course since there was no communication between the Pro and there computerized tee times. Layout is pretty good until you get to #7, the par 5. Landing area for this par 5 for lay ups was really torn up since we are players who like to play the ball down. Golfers and the course didn't care about the conditions on this one hole. Second, I was harassed by the ranger who was 78 years old, who does not understand what it is like to play the hardest holes on the course and be out of position. Was getting to my ball and he came out of the woods like some ogre to make me hurry our shots, even though the group in front of us was just getting off the green when we approached our second shots to par 4. The overall course has really gone downhill, but will give it it's due since the layout is challanging. Will not recommend this course due to conditions, which are mediocre at best. Not one representative from the pro shop would acknowledge they screwed up with the price they quoted and did not know what to say about the ranger who does not truly understand what slow play is. Please do not play this course! P.S. sorry this review is late, but needs to be said. The course probable does not care, or they would attempt to get back in touch with this golfer to discuss the problems!
The course has great faiways
It just rained the night before so it was cart path only when I played, but the fairways were in great shape. The greens were aerated a while ago but the holes in the greens still have not heeled up yet so it was not a good surface to putt on.
Good course in season
Greens were aerated and sandy. It was cold in December. Cart path only so I walked. Great course to play in season. Very close to my house and only $20 on golf now.
Bad shape
This is the worst I've seen this place. Seriously, who aerates the greens in the winter and the maintenance guy got smart with us and said they did it beginning of December! Even when we checked in to pay the staff failed to let us know the greens were aerified. Great layout has been one of my favorites. Will not go unless I hear conditions have improved!!!
