Great course!
Probably my favorite course in W. Mass. Challenging (long par 3s!) But really fun layout. Rack rate not too bad for quality of course, but they offer some good deals too. Friendly bar, good food, patio with great views! Highly recommend.
Nice traditional New England course - great layout and scenery
Thoroughly enjoyed playing Wahconah and will return again and again. The course is naturally laid out in the traditional New England style with play through a mix of mostly wooded and some open terrains with some slope and elevation changes. The course carries the history of being the last course Bobby Jones played on. It's a very nice venue and well worth the trip to experience.
Top 10 in state.
Wahconah Country Club – We played Wahconah after warming up at the nearby Bas Ridge course. First some history; Wahconah is expensive and I figured it would be one of the last courses I played as I strive to complete my goal of playing every course in Massachusetts. It’s $72 to walk and I have never found a reduced rate that would compel me to drive the 100 miles to play this course. They just recently were added to Golf18 and GolfNow websites. They were listed at different prices for different tee times throughout the day and when I saw it was only $35 for 18 with a cart at 12:45 PM I had to make plans to play it. We zipped around Bas Ridge in less than 3 hours and had almost 2 hours to kill if we waited for our tee time but we went straight to Wahconah and they let us right out which was cool. If I purchased the 11 AM tee-time it would have been $50 each. The course was opened in 1930 and is a Wayne Stiles design Geoff Cornish revamped it in 1961. It is only 6550 yards from the blues tees but has a slope of 135, so it is a difficult course to play. It is the last course Bobby Jones played a full round of golf at. When we drove up the clubhouse appearance at least from the road did not impress us. It looks like a bowling alley not what I’d expect from a top tier course. The pro-shop is small but functional and the restaurant and bar is nice. They have a good sized practice green right next to the 1st tee. The golf course, well it’s awesome. Excellent condition fast greens well maintained turf on the tees and fairways. The design is awesome and some local knowledge is needed to score well, tough play the first time, but once you see it you’ll know there are places that look innocuous from the tee you’ll wish you had aimed for the other side of the fairway or left it shorter or longer. An easy 4 stars here, the only itch I have is the lack of visible yardage markers, they have the traditional colored Frisbees at 100, 150 and 200 yards but they are hard to find because they are faded and getting grown in. At the discounted prices available now I’d list this as a must play and definitely pair it up with another western Mass course or activity it’s a long ride away.
Great Old New Englalnd Course
This is a very well maintained classic New England course with interesting holes and nice views of the surrounding Berkshire Mountains. The par three's are very challenging and fun to play. The staff was friendly and helpful. The driving range has both mats and grass tees. Mats were in use the day we played. I would recommend this course for a fun relaxing round on a nice track.
front nine is old school, back nine is more new school but fits w/front
score your best on the front nine as the back none will extract some strokes from you.
Greens are fast but eminently puttable.
Goofiest hole is the par 5 14th. Even with a good drive you must lay up short of, or slightly over, a creek, leaving 125 to 95 yard uphill approach to a severely canted green. My least favorite hole on the course.
Parkland Classic
Wahconah is set in the hills of Berkshire county and offers a challenging, scenic, varied round of golf. It best suits a good shotmaker with a reliable shortgame since the main challenge is the fast, true, sloping greens. Even from the tips the course isn't all that long and few holes are out of reach for the bogey golfer, but from above the hole the putts will challenge anyone. Fantastic wide open downhill drive on #1 (favor the right side), then a tough, long, uphill par 3 set the stage for a fairly easy front 9. 7 is reachable but remember that the green runs AWAY. The back is tougher, especially the diabolical par 5 14th. 18 is reachable but the big green runs hard left so it's a tough hole to birdie. Clubhouse isn't much to speak about. Staff isn't particularly welcoming, but the course makes up for all that.
