Could be great…
I frequent the area and always seem to play Whitaker Woods. This summer, I played twice.
This place is the preeminent public golf course in the area, and could be fantastic. Unfortunately , the course condition continues to disappoint. The tee boxes are a joke…weeds everywhere.
The staff is great, all locals doing their best but the clubhouse was dead on a beautiful Friday afternoon …TV’s off, no music, no bartender, no food except pre-made ham sandwiches. Not a soul enjoying the beautiful outdoor patio.
With some course maintenance , social media marketing, live music, & drink specials - you could get this place rockin & make some money on booze (duh.)
I was robbed
Paid $183 for 2 players and range balls. Should have known by the range condition that this wasn’t worth $83, let alone $183. I now understand why, on a gorgeous Friday, there were plenty of tee times available. The aerated greens (which I knew about) hadn’t been mowed in at least 3-4 days, weeds…..weeds…..weeds in the fairway and teeing areas. When there weren’t weeds, it was because the tee was bare.
Not what is used to be.
I’ve played many rounds here over the years. Some mistake or neglect has left the fairways, tee boxes, and greens in terrible condition. Paid $85 for green fee which added to the disappointment.
Duped
This course actually does have a lot of potential. Pretty nice layout very tight but playable. The tee boxes were atrocious. The problem was we booked 18 holes and when we show up the person in the golf shop informs us that the back nine is closed and we have to play the front nine twice. And not only that, the front nine greens were just aerated. He made it fair in his mind by giving us a very small discount. Next time as a courtesy to your customers who might not care about a little discount, please let them know about these changes in playing conditions. It was a bait and switch. Communication is crucial in the hospitality business.
Horrible
Couldn't give zero stars for course condition. Absolutely pathetic. Not worth $40 let alone he $90 I paid.
Great layout wasted by slow play, poor conditions and poor service
Course layout is a good test but took 4 hours 45 minutes to play, course was soggy and green were spongy and very slow and no service - no greeting or direction on arrival/handled own clubs/halfway house had no food. Under new ownership which is adding no value. I live less than 5 minutes from course and will not be going back anytime soon. Very sad because course has so much potential.
Very Bad
This course used to be awesome, but the conditions now basically make the course unplayable. The bunkers are all basically cement, tee boxes are just dirt patches and greens or completely burned out. Need major fixes in order to make this course playable again.
Trying to get back to the glory days.
I first want to state that I and my group of golf buddies were one of the first to play this course when it opened. No massive clubhouse, just a double wide trailer on a stone parking lot. Cost: $38 with a cart. The course was pristine and the greens were already fast and true. From that opening in 1996 to about six years ago the course stayed that way. For whatever reason things started going south quickly. You can read all the other comments on how bad it got. I just played this weekend and the course is far from pristine, but is on the road to recovery. Progress is being made but is taking time as new management has to deal with the O’Brien family. Greens are slower than normal but run true. I hope the mission statement from the new management stating they will bring it back to its glory days is true. Only time will tell.
Pace was very slow. 5.5 hours
Greens very slow.
Great layout.
Woodlands Course
This course has definitely gone downhill the last few years! I hadnt played the course in about 6 years, and back then it was in fantastic shape to go with the fantastic scenery.
The staff was still very friendly, the clubhouse and golf shop were very nice, and everything went very smooth. Unfortunately the tee boxes look like they havent been seeded in a couple years, the fairways were missing large patches of grass, and the greens were incredibly long and slow. Im glad I did not pay full price, as $80 seems pretty steep for tue course conditions.
not what it could be
This tough layout has always been a challenge, and the ever-present woods ate a half dozen (or so) of my golfballs, but that's to be expected. However, the tee boxes are in very poor condition and the cart paths are falling apart. Taking down some trees might help provide some sun to the tee boxes.
Tough course
The course is coming back. Conditions were much better than last year.
Beautiful course but poor conditions
Let me say this course has soooo much potential. The clubhouse is really cool, putting green was good, I didn’t hit the range but my buddy said it was good, and the greens on the course were true but a little slow. However the tee boxes and fairways… they need some real work. The tee boxes on maybe half the holes were super dead and had some weeds, others were ok. Some of the par 3 boxes were very divot filled. The fairways weren’t super divot filled, but they were dead or had weeds in a lot of areas which I was really disappointed with. If I wouldn’t have used a hot deal I would have been quite upset with paying the full $95 weekend fee. The course has such a cool layout, it was really challenging, and the views were awesome. Very unique course. Just poorly maintained in my opinion. I might come back if I get another hot deal but I’m not going for the full fee.
Returning to Glory
A lot of bad reviews due to recent course conditions in the past years, but the course is getting back to its great conditions.
One of the toughest layouts around and abdundant wildlife. Great staff. Nice to see the course becoming what it’s meant to be.
Hopefully ownership pours more resources into it, could be one of the best in the area.
Prices a little steep depending on the day. Only negative is the green speed, which is getting better now that the grass is back to being pristine.
Very enjoyable.
Staff excellent. Grreter/cart guy. Very nice and helpful.
