Very acceptable course condition.
With all the rain this area has received this year, it was understandable to find the course conditions to be wet in spots. The course was not perfect but very acceptable. We found the greens to be the most challengeing. We enjoyed the round.
This course can challenge even very good golfers
The course was in the best condition I've ever seen it. Many improvements are evident & the greens were fast & in excellent condition.
Greens are the best!
The greens are reason enough to play here! Five par 5's also. Very enjoyable. Good job Mark.
Challenging course, but really needs work.
Has the potential to be very fun and challenging due to it's (several) blind tee shots and very fast sloping greens, but to get there this course needs some serious work. The fairways are full of holes, roots, bumps, etc The tee boxes are are not level. The 1st cut of rough is approximately 4.5 inches deep - meaning if you miss the fairway by an inch you will spend several minutes trying to locate your ball (I even gave up on one that I saw come down just a few feet to the left.) This makes for a very slow pace of play. You'll be very lucky to find a yardage marker (I think I saw a total of 2.) The whole course feels as if someone just carved a track out of an active farm land - There are lots of stagnant water pools which means LOTS of mosquitoes. Furthermore, the flag sticks are only 4ft tall. You cannot see the hole from just about anywhere, so you're almost always hitting blind - which gets very frustrating when you're trying to plan your approach. I absolutely do not recommend using online reservations - the staff seemingly hasn't gotten the hang of it. I made a reservation (via Golf Now) for an early morning tee time, and showed up 10 minutes prior to my reservation. I had to sit in the parking lot for 30 minutes before anyone even arrived to open the pro shop! They had no idea that anyone was coming in - they only keep track of the phone reservations. Overall, if you can play here for $10, why not? I don't think it's worth much more than that.
Fast Greens
Yes the rough needs to be mowed a bit more, but we have had a wet spring and a tough winter. The greens are very well kept and this is a very good value for the money. I played on Memorial Day in the morning. After a fun round, we hit the Brown Bear in Shelby for a great lunch. Can't complain about a day like that!!
Did the Greenskeeper Quit?
What a mess this course was. It doesn't appear the fairways have been mowed for a week. Dandelions were every where. In the fairways, rough and even sand traps. They were only charging $15 for 18 and a cart on a busy holiday weekend and that was $14 too much considering the horrible course condition. The only good thing that for some reason the greens were good and fast. I would stay away from this course. I know I will not be going back.
Fun Course
Tough greens and back 9 has some long holes. Overall, quite challenging but fun to play. It will definitely challenge any level player.
The course is super nice
Course is in great shape and the greens are fast and challenging
Enjoyed playing there!
Really felt welcomed by the 'front desk" guy.
Course was in good shape. Particularly impressed by condition of the greens (not PGA shape, but really good public course shape).
Play was a bit slowed, but that was because of a twosome with one fella who was playing for his first time - ever! Found that out when his playing partner apologized at the turn (when they had stopped). And, we were even a twosome behind but still he was at the club saying "sorry". Those kind of people in the area, I believe.
Admittedly, too, a heavy rainstorm had passed through the area the night before. While there was a "bunch" of standing water in the middle of several fairways, they still allowed carting. Do believe they know the folks in the area will recognize those conditions quickly and drive carts appropriately. Again, in my opinion, a reflection of their regular clientele.
Bottom line, a very enjoyable experience.
Challenging long course with fast greens
This was a fun course to play that challenged you with every shot and made you use all the clubs in your bag.
Very FUN course, with challenges and opportunities for Birdies.
Staff is super friendly, we visited with The Coach for over an hour and he gave us great hints of where to play on our trip, what to see. Then made sure to pass along some local knowledge of the Oceana course that was a great help.
This is not a Jack N. type of course but if you want to have fun if your a 7 handicap and your wife is a 20 something, it offers abundant fun and challenges. We had a blast and felt like we were right at home. We are from Texas, but we will be back to MI and the Oceana course!
great course for the price
The course was in great shape. Very short but the greens were beautiful. Some of them were a little unfair, there were greens that were impossible to keep your ball on the green when you putted. I had my ball roll 30-40 feet on a 10 foot putt more than once.
Great Deal
Was able to play 18 w/ cart for $11 on a Saturday.
Course is always in nice shape. Greens are well-maintained, quick and add a nice challenge to the course. Front nine is much easier to score than the back, which is long -- three par fives.
You can't go work playing here if you're in the area. If your hungry or thirsty for an adult beverage after your round, don't miss the Brown Bear in downtown Shelby.
Challenging greens
The course is open with rolling greens and some difficult pin placements. Greens are quick and well maintained. A very good value.
Great sloping greens
A lot of fun with the most challenging greens around. Don't get above the hole on several holes or your 4 foot putt might be a 30 footer or achip to get back on the green. Nice fast greens. Great value
supper greens
this course was well kept and had some challenging holes. the frount nine was short but extreamly fun. the back nine is long and could play tough on a windy day. overall this course was very fun to play
Check out these greens!
After researching this course, everyone just raved over the speed and difficulty of the greens at Oceana. Well, I now understand why! They are perfect and very fast! Some of the greens have some big tilt and really make you plan your approach shots based on pin locations. If you are above the hole in certain spots you will have a tough time getting up and in with only two shots. The course itself is kept well, the fairways could be kept a little tighter but the grass is lush everywhere. A few elevated tees provide some nice views. The layout is the only downside, a lot of straight holes that wind back and forth, especially on the back 9. But once you get to the green, your creativity will be tested on every hole!
Challanging course at least for me. Like a challange
Tough course for me, but I like a challange once in awhile. Was in good shape for all the rain we have had.
Great course except for....
Oceana is a Great course for layout, staff, and value. We would play again, except the rough is extremely thick right up to the fairway. We had to hunt for balls constantly, including a shot that was only a foot from the fairway!! Long roughs slow down the pace of play and it's bad business for the golfer and the Golf Course! Get it together Oceana, you are better than that!
