Washtenaw Golf Club
About
Located in between Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Golf Club, founded in 1899, is one of the most historic clubs in the state of Michigan. The club was private for most of its history, but an ownership change in 2019 turned this venerable layout into one of the area’s best public experiences. The 18-hole course plays 6,512 yards from the championship tees, though there are four sets of tees The club is in the midst of a multi-year restoration and enhancement project, guided by architect Ray Hearn, that includes green enlargements, tree management, and in the installation of some new championship tees. Facilities here include a putting green, small driving range, chipping green, and a large clubhouse, grill and bar, patio and event space.

Greens were great, course was busy but didn’t effect pace of play.
Greens were great, course was busy but didn’t effect pace of play. Course was a lot of fun.
so so
First time playing this course. Conditions were alright for this late in season. when they say greens are fast, they really mean it! Staff was very friendly.
Surprising- not in a good way
The terrain is quite hilly and sloped and was visually appealing, but challenging to play. Pace of play was slow- we waited on almost every shot. Greens are challenging with significant slopes, mounding, or undulation on almost all greens. Our cart barely made it to the finish line with stuttering and jerking.
The biggest shocker is that there is no actual tee box for more than half the forward tees. Literally, 2 red tee markers are just placed in the fairway. Clearly low-mid handicappers, whether women or seniors, are not a priority. Message received.
Much has changed
First time playing this course in 20 years. The course is not in greatest shape but it is still ok.
The greens were chewed up and need some TLC. You can tell being open to the public has been hard on the greens. I was repairing 10-12 ball marks each green. Wish people would fix their divots! The fairways were in good shape. The tee boxes were a little rough but not too bad.
It is not in the same condition that I remember playing it when it was private.
Solid course but not 4.5 star
Overall good experience. Greens were challenging. Tee boxes were OK. Big downside were the bunkers. Found 2 of them during my round and they were rock hard. Expected more from a course that was previously private. Pace was good for a Sunday at a shade less than 4 1/2 hours. Probably play again once or twice a year.
A Michigan Classic
This course is very representative of golf courses built in the early 20th century in Michigan before high powered earth movers were invented. The fairways and greens follow the existing grades and slopes when the course was laid out. This feature gives the course a sense of well integrated harmony. For people like me who miss quite a few fairways, the thick rough presented a challenge for distance control and direction. I would rate it tough but fair. Never a dull moment!
Hidden gem in the city
Great course! Everything was in great shape. Greens are quick and roll true. Pin placements were tough but fair. Like every public course, ball marks on the green and a plethora of fairway divots were the only detraction.
Just ok
Course itself was in pretty good shape. Deep rough, smooth true greens. Hard to find a ball washer and if I did, it didn’t have water anyway. Driving range was closed due to construction. Bar tender was kinda rude. For the same money, I’d play Eagle Crest.
Golden Age Beauty
I love Washtenaw Golf Club! Fantastic “Golden Age of Golf Architecture” layout and they keep it in fabulous condition. It is a course you could play every day and always enjoy it. We are lucky it is public!
