Washtenaw Golf Club
About
Located in between Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Golf Club, founded in 1899, is one of the most historic clubs in the state of Michigan. The club was private for most of its history, but an ownership change in 2019 turned this venerable layout into one of the area’s best public experiences. The 18-hole course plays 6,512 yards from the championship tees, though there are four sets of tees The club is in the midst of a multi-year restoration and enhancement project, guided by architect Ray Hearn, that includes green enlargements, tree management, and in the installation of some new championship tees. Facilities here include a putting green, small driving range, chipping green, and a large clubhouse, grill and bar, patio and event space.

Excellent old style course
This is an excellent course in the old Donald Ross type. With sloping greens and mature large trees on each side of the fairway it is also a pretty course. To score well you need to know where to miss, so playing more than once helps out. Course will play different with different flag positions so it won't get boring.
Classic design in great shape
I recently move to the area so I have very little compare the Washtenaw Country club other than Southern California. I arrived and was greeted by friendly staff in the pro shop. I was sent directly to the firs tee almost 20 min early for my tee time. The course was in good shape. The tee boxes were level and had good coverage. The tees were narrow but straight with no tee boxes aimed into the trees or hazards. The fairways had good coverage with minimal leaves or divots. The fairways were well groomed but not super tight. The rough was long but not super thick. Coverage in both fairways and rouhg was good with only a few dry areas. The greens were smooth and rolled extremely well. The speed was medium fast with minimal pitch marks. The course has a lot of blind tee shots and doglegs. I will definitely benefit from playing this course a few time.
Beautiful course!
Course is in excellent condition! Pace of play extremely slow and there were no rangers on the course! 6 hour round!
Back to Washtenaw
After Polo Fields bought Washtenaw I joined as a private club member because PF-Washtenaw is only 3 miles from my house. I quit 3 years ago when I bought a boat. I love playing that course. Now that it's public, I get to play it again! The pace of play was much slower than before, and the greens are more beat up, but I'm happy it's still running and I get to play the 2d oldest course in Michigan!
Nice enjoyable course
Had a great time playing this course. This is a country club without the country club attitude. The greens were magnificent fairways and tee boxes were great. Can't wait to play again.
Rolling hills and hard, quick greens
I was really impressed with this golf course. This tree lined beauty forced you to curve the ball left and right and if you catch the fairway, it ran out another 20+ yards. The greens were also very hard and quick, probably due to the temp getting up to 94F ! The tee boxes were in pretty good shape as well. With a few force layups, and some even blind, it helps to have a gps. The only issueI had were that there should be signs directing you to the next hole as it can get confusing. All and all, the course is a great test that I would recommend to anyone.
First time playing at Washtenaw GC, the course was very well take care of and played beautifully. Large old tree surround the fairways but didn't feel to narrow and the green rolled nicely. Will play again
Was excited! Until...
Once private...member driven...it keeps that mentality while offering golf to public and without public golf they would not make it, like most other private clubs. Doesn't keep them from making you feel out of place and finding a reason to constantly make a scolding remark regarding where I parked cart. I'm all about etiquette and rules and always look for them so I know what club expectations will be...so any chance they had to tell me I was parked in the wrong place was jumped on...and parking off cart path next to range would make sense but apparently I didn't know these rules...and there were no signs. Add over priced snacks and your still spending too much money on a round of golf at a decent course but not amazing...too many other amazing courses out there and for less money and headache. Greens didn't roll but bounced. Overall disappointed considering I spent more then usual and could have went to a better course...
Maybe return if I have others in group going but it won't be my regular jog and I go 4 days a week!
Great early season round!
Really enjoyed playing the course. I'm usually a UMich course guy but they were still closed. This course was in great shape considering the recent weather and they gave everyone a free dog and chips at the turn to thank us for coming out early in the season! I definitely recommend the course.
Return to Washtenaw CC
Haven't played the course in over 20 years. Love the layout, love the challenge, it's a great course to play. Outstanding staff, helpful, courteous, and friendly. For late fall play, the course was in excellent shape. Greens fast and true. Maintenance true cutting, blowing and collecting leaves. Looking forward to playing this course again and again next year.
We appreciate your kind words! Our staff is working hard to keep the course in tip top shape for as long as possible. Here's hoping for at least a few more weeks of golf! If you are interested in playing the course often, contact the Golf Shop at 734.434.2040 and ask about our season pass. We will see you soon!
Excellent course in the middle of Ypsilanti
This was a course I always wanted to play, as it is local, but up until a few years ago, it was members only. It still has some of those trappings, but at the cost I got through GolfNow, it was an exceptional deal. I would definitely golf here again, and if the prices are right, I would move my league to this course in a heartbeat. It is not an easy course. The trees are a challenge on nearly every hole, and it has some exceptionally long par 5's for the area, which considering the slice of land, you would never expect. The fairways are modulated so that you rarely have an even footing, and the greens are pristine and fast. Really enjoyed my round here.
Hi Ugrath,
We are so glad you had a great experience at The Washtenaw Golf Club. We do appreciate all feedback and we love to hear that you had a fun and challenging round. We do host leagues, and would certainly love to host yours. If you call the Pro Shop at 734-434-2040 and ask for our Head Golf Professional, Ryan Cooper, he'd be glad to discuss rates and availability with you.
I hope you are taking advantage of this nice weather.

Most entertaining layout ever played
10/10. Top 2 courses in SE Michigan.
We are so glad you had an "entertaining" round! We hope to see you again soon.

Great golf course
I could play this course every day
Very Ordinary.
Country club feel with holes that butt up to one another. Glad I played because I had heard nice things about the course after its transition. Nothing special, but worthwhile for some variety.
Country club experience
Used to be private. Semi private now great course. Recently punched greens still fast.
Old style Country Club
This was a country club until the start of this year (2016) according to one of the members I played with for part of the back 9. There's a few holes that local knowledge can really help on, but most of the holes are pretty straight forward. Fun course that I've never got to play until now. 8/10
Great Course & Staff!
A quirky course, but I had an amazing time! The blues play 6564 according to the scorecard, but don't let the yardage fool you because it can be tough even from the whites at 6205. I didn't hit a bunker, but the sand was freshly raked & looked new. The tee boxes, fairways & greens are very well maintained with few ball & club marks. I had never heard of this course until I found a Hot Deal on GolfNow. It's not far from my house & for the money could be a place to play for years to come. I highly recommend playing here & hope opening it up to the public doesn't ruin this beauty.
As a public player who plays here multiple times monthly, I must take issue with this review. The staff has always been friendly and courteous; this course has anything BUT a "private course" mentality. That said, the facility still is a private club (as part of the Polo Fields) and there are going to be some policies in place other than "just park it anywhere". Didn't the tee shots whizzing over your head suggest maybe that wasn't the place to park? Overpriced snacks? Yes, but are you aware of any facilities - public or private - offering a Snickers at Costco prices? What are your expectations for golf course conditions in the middle of April in Michigan? Anything beyond "open" is a bonus. Washtenaw has had a reputation for decades of being one of the best conditioned courses in Metro Detroit. I played there last weekend and the course was in exceptional shape given a fairly cold and wet spring. I'm sorry Sultana and Tall Oaks closed a few years ago and forced you to pay more than $5 for a round of golf.
