Very wet
Not their fault it was wet, but the greens could have been rolled before that happened. They were very bumpy, ball wasn’t able to roll smooth.
Pace of play DESTROYED the round.
First of all, I'll start off positive and say that this is one of the most senic and well maintained courses I've ever been to, and I have played many courses that golfnow offers in my area. Some of them have cost double or even triple what I paid to play Sycamore Hills.
Unfortunately, the views and course layout do not make up for the way they manage groups and slow play. This my second time there, and the same thing happened to me the 1st time, so I just wrote it off as a fluke, but going 2 for 2, kinda rules out coincidence for me. What they do is they double book every tee time (to cover for no shows I guess). They have a ranger and a starter, but they are useless. Long story short, I ended up playing 13 holes in 4 hours (in a cart) and from the 14th on there were 6 somes waiting behind walkers, behind other 6 somes. If I would have stayed to finish, the round would have taken around 6 hours. The worst part about it was that there are 27 holes there, but everyone was gridlocked on one of the 9s. So Instead of finishing the round, i drove to the cart return, probably never to return, which is sad because of the quality of the course. I would understand this if it was a Saturday at noon and it was just the sheer volume of people, but I teed of at 1030 on a Tuesday.
In conclusion, if you have 6 or 7 hours for a round of golf, props to you for the patience and commitment. Go spend them them at Sycamore Hills. The course is beautiful.
Slow day
Very Very slow with super slow 4somes.. stacked 2somes.. Weather was good.. Greens were horrible.. looked like they were aerated 2 within last couple weeks (why?)
Nice but short
Wanted to get a round in where the family could play at a decent pace and see the course for a scramble we'll be playing in October. The greens were smooth and played at a nice pace. Not lightning, not slow. We played in about 5 hours.
Wasn't all that happy getting the North, West routing. Courses are very short. Each 9 has a pretty tricked up hole where you almost have to play a 300 yd hole with 2 150 yard shots. You don't have to have holes that are drivers every time, but, two mid irons to a hole is a turn off to me. Twice in the round.... even less.
Since this is a course with three rotating nines, we were dismayed that they snuck a 4-some on as we were making the turn and they were SLOW. It took us at least 30 minutes longer on the back as a result.
They didn't mention that an outing was getting ready to start just as we finished. That was fine, but, they choked the entire limited room to pull our carts back to the bag drop and leave.
Great metro Detroit course
Played this course on a beautiful Sunday in May; generally one of the slowest days on a golf course. Our foursome played in just over 4 hours which was reasonable. Greens recovered from any previous year damage. First time playing this year, but I'll be back if I end up in metro Detroit again.
Pace of play
The pace of play was my only problem with this course. For the first 4-5 holes we had to wait a good 15 minutes before we could tee off. It didn't really open up until we were halfway through the second nine.
Bad just bad
I bought a group golfer for this course. About 30 minutes from my house, thought this group golfer deal would give me a chance to try it. Showed up and had my group golfer number and was told they didn't have a list from the website so they would not accept my number. I asked if I show them my certificate number and just wrote it down and updated the sheet once they got it. No. Paid 35 bucks to play a course that was covered in water. Two holes were shortened and pace of play was at 3:25 for 7 holes. Never said anything about the water on the course when I paid. They had 4 twosomes out and never paired anyone up. There were 8 carts on hole tee box. Course was already super short and didn't have any blue tee boxes out. Only white and green. Terrible experience. Staff was short and unfriendly. By not accepting the group golfer, they get paid full price from every person that shows up expecting to use the round they already paid for. Won't go back to use this group golfer. Not worth the wait or the course.
Mike,
We are sorry you had an unpleasant experience at our facility. My name is Matthew and I am the person you spoke with. Group Golfer had yet to deliver the booklet which provides the roster list. Without the booklet or a hard copy of the voucher we were not able to accept it at that time. I apologized for this inconvenience.
We did have one shortened hole that day due to recent flooding, which left us with an 18-hole, par 70 golf course. After checking the starter sheets, groups were able to play 18 holes in 4.5 hours. While this is not an ideal pace, it was also cart path only that day because of the wetness and recent flooding. If you do encounter slow play at our course, we recommend contacting the Pro Shop or a Ranger so the problem can be addressed.
It is our hope you reconsider using your voucher and decide to come back another time so you are able to have a better experience at our course.
I encourage you to contact me at (586) 598-9500 ext 1.

Leaf-free, Challenging & Aesthetically Pleasing
Mid-November golf in Michigan leaves little to complain about. This was my first time playing Sycamore Hills (West/South) and am now wishing I discovered this place earlier in the year. The course is extremely well kept given the time of year, leafs were only an issue on 2 of 18 holes, greens are challenging, scenery is unique, hole design was fun and overall experience was great! Will be booking my first round of next years season here!
favorite course in macomb county
I cant understand for the life of me why this course has only 3.3 stars on golfnow.com This course has extremely nice fairways and greens and the course layout is my favorite of any course in the area. Ive played this course many times and only once was it over booked. It was pretty bad with 4 groups waiting at the first tee box. But after a couple holes the pace of plsy was fine.
West to South
We played the West course (9 holes) then the South course (9 holes). The west was the easier of the two. The South has a lot of water in strategic locations that made it difficult. Both nines were in good condition and the fallen leaves were only in the rough so it was important to keep your ball in the fairway if you wanted to find it. I lost 5 balls but found 6 so I felt ahead of the game so to speak. My score was 5 shots better on the west than on the south.
Great package
Hadn't play the course in 20 years. Enjoyed it then as a new course and had same feeling yesterday. Most greens were newly aerated and a little dried out due to dry season but still appreciated playing again on a very nice track.
It sounds like you had a reasonably frustrating round. We'd like to give you a better experience if possible. I encourage you to call Matthew at (586) 598-9500 ext. 1 so we can make it right.
I appreciate the time and thought put into addressing my experience at your facility. I doubt many places would have taken the time.
Hello, Scott9663332. Thank you for playing Sycamore Hills and we appreciate your compliments regarding the golf course. I am sorry you had a slow round when you played here and that our rangers failed to move along slow golfers. Tuesday, May 1st was our first beautiful day of the season and many golfers decided to take advantage. If you call the Pro Shop we would be more than happy to address your concern on the course and alleviate any issues.
We do utilize each of our three 9-hole courses and did so on the day you played. I promise that we never double-book tee-times and do not permit 6-somes. It is possible for two groups to have the same tee-time but starting on different courses.
Again, I apologize that you had a slow round which diminished your experience here. We hope you reconsider playing at Sycamore Hills in the future. We would love to show you a great time at our facility. If you would like to discuss this further, feel free to call Matthew at (586) 598-9500 ext. 1.
