Disappointed
They closed the course due to weather damage. offered to let me play my round 4 hours later, if they could open at all. very frustrating. They had my number and could of called to save me a 40 minute drive... they didn't...
Bring lots of mosquito repellent
One fairway was a messed up mud bog. Some slight flooding otherwise. Mediocre water management on this course (not bad, not good). Mosquitos were everywhere in mid afternoon. Bring repellent as recent rain will only make things worse.
Interesting layout, nice challenges
Course was somewhat wet. Greens were totally fine. Plenty of traps. Narrow fairways, tree lined and water hazards. Very picturesque. Made for a very interesting layout.
Willow Metro Park
Always in good condition, even after the heavy rain we had here last week. Greens always in good condition, one of my "go to" courses during the season.
Decent course, bad choice
Timing is everything. I'd recently played Huron Meadows, and I've played Hudson Mills several times, so I figured I'd try a Metropark course that's closer to my house. I just didn't think things through. Knowing the area, I was aware that Willow was in the lowlands not all too far from the Huron River. What I didn't take into account was the high amount of rain we've had in the area the last week. Just one week prior parts of Wayne County were experiencing severe flooding.
The course was in decent shape. The large brown patches in the fairways were unsightly, and definitely existed prior to the past week. My guess is the grounds crew have their hands full with the property. For the most part, they're doing well. The tees were in really good shape. A couple were patchy, but I had no issues with them. The greens were really great, which surprised me considering how wet the rest of the course was. I thought I'd be able to hit at the flag, but the ball reacted normally instead of sticking. Speed was medium, and the contours were not too severe. The biggest disappointment was 16, a severe dogleg left. The fairway were you need to land the ball in order to make your approach was a quagmire, and was unplayable. I hit short, knowing I would have had to use my ball retriever if I'd hit it where I needed to. But I found out that short left me no approach. If not for the six inches of standing water, it still would have been awful. There fairway is so damaged the hole is unfair. Not sure what they can do to fix it. I have myself a four, picked up my ball and went to the 17th tee instead of making myself frustrated.
I give the course itself a pass only because I'm sure it's overall not as bad as what I experienced because of the recent weather. 16 though... that brings the rating down a bit.
The one thing I'll dispute is the friendliness of the staff. Maybe I caught them all on the perfect day, but the comments I've read are not what I experienced. The gentleman bringing out the carts (I had the first tee time and played alone) drove one to me and quipped that he'd warmed it up for me. The gentleman inside was polite, and didn't have any issues with me teeing off before my tee slot (I got that first time. Golf Now paired me up with a twosome and another single. That meant three carts instead of two for that group, but he shrugged and said hit em off since I was a half hour early. I promised to be done in under 2 1/2 hours so the cart thing wouldn't hurt. Got done in just over 2). On another dogleg, I cut the corner, so I didn't see the ball down. The man mowing around the green whistled and pointed to were my ball was, then have me a thumbs up for the good shot. And the guy changing out the flag sticks (American Flags for the 4th of July... nice touch!) gave a friendly wave as he finished changing the one on the par three I was about to hit too. Seriously, the staff could not have been nicer or more professional.
It's not as good as the other Metropark courses I've played, but I wish my first time playing it was better timed and not after a monsoon.
Great course
Nice course - has done challenging holes. A great value and a must play
Great courses for the money
I’m a big fan of the metro park courses including Willow. They are well maintained, have good practice facilities, and they are very reasonably priced. I try to golf on them at least once a season and often find my way there multiple times a season. Great course, great price.
Need a ranger to speed up play!
Had to wait on every hole because of slow play. Course is maintained very well.
Solid metropark course
Been playing this course since I was a kid and have never been disappointed. Slightly challenging but overall very fair course and greens. Would recommend
Covid my butt
Got paired up with a man and woman we didn't know. Slowest round ever. Won't be back
