I’m becoming a regular at this Tillinghast classic
Forgiving fairways and yet challenging layout by the famed course designer. To be able to live within 20 minutes from an accessible course from the same designer of Baltusrol, Winged Foot and Bethpage Black is a real treat.
The greens are not easy and by no means is it ready for a PGA event like the other courses mentioned. But, for $60 with a cart it’s a fair price and a fair test.
The staff is nice and if the pace is moving you’ll not be bothered. Not a course for you beginners, it’s more suited for lower handicap players.
Great course
Course was in amazing shape! Very wide open, with a few challenges holes. Will definitely be going back.
Fun course
Wide open fun course kept in great shape. Pace of play was right on time. Only complaint would be that cart girl completely ignored our foursome for the entire round.
Good course good conditions
Course seems to always be in great condition. Fairways/roughs/ greens are all well maintained. The greens are consistent throughout , however they were watering when I played so some greens ran quicker but overall very well kept
Great course
First time playing this course. Nice lay out with some deep bunkers around the green. Not very long Par 5’s but well they play longer than the card says. The 15 hole is a really nice hole. The cross bunker about 300 yards out is a cool feature. Overall a nice place to play. I will be back to play it again.
Former glory beginning to peek through
This was the second time I have played this course.
3 years ago this place was a wreck. Burnt out, but somehow soaked at the same time. Pretty forgettable overall probably because all of the grass was in such bad shape.
Today it was awesome. The tees and fairways are average, but are in good enough shape to not be distracting. Conversely, the green complexes are all interesting and challenging. For now the greens are long/slow but I’ll take that over burnt and bumpy. Management is doing a nice job of resurrecting this Tillinghast classic, I really hope the improvements continue!
Pace was a little slow, apparently they had a double booked tee time from GolfNow/their in house system, but it could have been worse.
I will be back often this season!
Very playable
The course was in good condition greens rolled well ,a little slow. Interesting mix of holes. I would definitely play again.
Improved
Took off in 2019 from playing this course to let the new management work on it. I have to say, its really getting there. A couple of greens were rough but overall satisfactory. 1st and 11th fairways are in bad shape, but cart path only. The 10th hole finally drains and was the dryest its ever been I think in the 10 or so years Ive played there. Im glad theyre trying to preserve this tillinghast design. A little overpriced at peak in my opinion but I understand public courses in monmouth county near the shore are hard to come by. Keep it up
Disappointing for the price, will not play again
I guess I should preface this review with I'm a high 80's to low 90's golfer who likes to play "ready golf" and was on a 12:20 tee time on Father's Day so a slow round is to be expected. The "starter" (18 year old kid) lets back to back two-somes go out at 12 & 12:10, when on a busy day they should've been combined into a four-some to eliminate a group from the course. Caught up to the two-some ahead of us on the 3rd hole while they were playing 2 balls each hitting them 40 yards per swing, and thought it was reasonable to stop for the cart girl while we were standing on the tee box. Road their tail the entire 4th hole, got fed up when we pulled up to the 5th tee and they were waiting for the 2-some in front of them to tee off. Wouldn't it make sense to combine and be a 4-some at that point? Same thing happened on the 6th hole, finally flagged down the "ranger" who was a 21 year old kid, voiced our complaints and suggestion, he at least addressed the situation with both 2-somes but came back to say "they don't want to combine, but the 2 in front of you will let you play through". Okay at least got past a group, but shouldn't the "ranger" not ask them to combine, but tell them hey you're holding up the whole course your now a 4-some. Slowly play 7-8-9, get to the 10th and there's legit 5 groups on hole 10. 1 on the green, 1 on the fairway, 1 at the ladies tee's, 1 at the white/blue tees, and then my 3-some debating to go home or not. Said screw it and just drove past everyone to jump on hole 11 and played the last 8 holes in 90 minutes, in fact we caught the 11:20 group on the 18th hole who tee'd off an hour before us. At least the "ranger" was cool about us going back to play the 10th that we skipped after finishing the 18th. While doing so had to maneuver our carts past the Staten Island Yo's having a parking lot party with their leased Bentley's, real nice touch and proof that there's absolutely ZERO management at this course. If you are a real golfer, regardless of what you shoot, the pace of play and nonsense at this place will make you pull your hair out.
Bottom line: Only play here if you decide to play the night before and everything else is booked. The green's were awful with potholes and were what you see at a county owned executive course. 33% of the tee boxes were dirt, 50% of the sand traps had rocks, and 3 of the holes were cart path only due to massive fairway repairs. Without any true adults/professionals running the place it's a clown show. For $75 with a cart on a weekend prime-time rate you'll get much better value for your money at Knob Hill or any of the Monmouth County courses. Will not play again.
Friday is not a weekend
Weekend rates for a Friday round of golf is just not right, and a deceptive business practice. And why is there a requirement to take a cart ($$) for rounds before 1:00, when it is cart path only??
Course has potential and staff is friendly... but $75, yes $75 for a Friday round is criminal. Great history to the course- but greens are in terrible shape. You can’t charge $75 for a course that 6000 yards from the tips.
Much Improved
I haven’t play SEGC in probably 3 years. The amount of work that has been done is amazing. The drainage has made a huge difference in the fairways; the grasses around the greens & on tee boxes are 100% better than expected. The greens are also so much better than before, despite being a little slow. A huge number of trees have been removed too which helps the overall conditions. Playing it again tomorrow!
hey ranger, where are you????
starting on the 10th hole, the group ahead of us slowed to a crawl. we were waiting 10 to 20 minutes on every tee. behind us the entire course was backed up. the aggravation was over the top. would you think after 45 minutes with no group coming up 18, they would figgure out that there was a problem?? Come on guys, get off your duffs and do your flippin jobs!! I love this course but were done here! Ime not gonna pay good money to get myself in a foul mood ,
