Victim of its own success
Ashbrook is a wonderful, big, sprawling Parkland golf course. Unfortunately, I was one of the only two county golf courses in Union County, it gets a ton of traffic. And the traffic doesn’t clean up after itself.
I’m not sure a single person fixes their ball marks, or replaces the divots. Combine this with a Course that essentially is carved through swamp land with below average drainage, And things can get pretty sloppy out there.
The layout still holds up. A challenge from the blues, it’s a legitimate beast from the black tees. The greens are as lightning fast as any county course in the state. Unfortunately, some of them resemble minefields, pot with hundreds of old ball marks.
The bar and restaurant are well above average for a public golf course. The bar is a nice deck with views of the ninth and 18th greens, and an above average food menu.. the staff were helpful and pleasant.
This course could certainly be in much better shape, and pace of play can be agonizingly slow. But the fixes to these problems are largely the responsibility of the clientele.. they need to take some pride in their local golf course, and do a better job taking care of it.
Not bad
Nice pace ..a lot rain lately..but overall good and fast pace and relax ..good staff & bar & bar craft
Ash Swamp
I normally don’t leave reviews - but I’m hoping senior leadership at Kemper sports sees this. I Grew up playing on very basic municipal golf courses in the Deep South… and ash brook is not far off with the condition it’s in. Tee boxes are chewed up and sloped / most fairways drain so poorly you need a canoe to get to your ball. And the standing water is so bad there are pumps in some fairways. The grass, where it wasn’t underwater it’s a combo of bent / hybrid / and crab grass everywhere. The greens are in above average shape as well most of the bunkers - but with really good courses under their management, kemper sports should be ashamed of this one. The course has the bones to be a good public track, but it’s going a take major overhaul to fix the drainage issues and turf management problems.
Would’ve like to have known only the front nine was open and no carts either.
It would’ve been really nice if there was some way to know before I booked the round that :
1. Only the front nine was open
2. No carts either.
3. No refunds because I booked through GolfNow. I was told to follow up through Golfnow.
First time playing the course and I liked the layout( Front 9 because that’s all I got to play)
Paired up with two regulars. Really nice guys who stated the course has a drainage issue especially after rainstorms.
It would have been nice if a simple email was sent out by the course informing those who booked a round of the conditions PRIOR to arriving and checking in. Being that it was within the hour of my round starting, I couldn’t cancel the round without being charged for it 👎
In the future, I personally wouldn’t play here until a couple of days of dry weather.

NJ has a Green acres program where if you are a county resident you can purchase a county card and play at a reduced rate. I live less than 2 miles from Ash Brook GC.in Middlesex county. Ash Brook GC is in Union county. that being said I do not get any discount at the course.
I purchased the round on GolfNow at a very good rater. A Union county Senior resident can play for $38.00. I purchased the round on Golf Now for $47.47. Not bad.
The course has been changed since I played last time in the 90's. The nines were flipped. 10th hole becoming 1st hole and 1st hole becoming 10th hole. For the most part the tee boxes were in good condition, there were several that were chewed up. All of the fairways and greens were in great shape. the sans traps actually had nice fluffy sand in them.
I played the white tees, which played 5,850 yards. That was more that enough length for me as a 74year old senior who can still move the ball. I shot an 88, which I was very satisfied with.
I will certainly go back and play again. Highly recommended.
ash brook they fixed all the water damage, the green was moderately fast and everything was good. It is a place I want to go again.
Course in great condition !
Wide fairways, great bunkers and good greens. Loved it
Nice course
Really enjoyed it. Would come back more often if they offered Middlesex county residents some kind of discount.
Cart Path Only ‼️❓
Nice course with good amenities. Very poor layout for Cart Path Only.. it Felt like I walked 10 miles around the course,!!!? Thanks God this also slowed play down significantly allowing plenty of time to rest between shots!!?
80% of the course was in good shape and there was absolutely no need for this stupid restriction.
Management has to use some Common Sense and do the right thing by identifying specific cart path only areas, and not Restricting the Whole Course 🚫...
