Gen in the north
Not true that staff does not like GolfNow reservation. We did just that and was treated extremely well by the staff. The only complaint I have was that my GPS didn't work on this course. Given the Pyrple Hawk has a challlenging layout, knowing exact yardage might have been a plus.
OK - but.....
The course design is nice and the condition is in decent condition for a public course, the Clubhouse and restaurant are average but the men's room on the lower level was awful, not clean and run down. Porta Potties on the course might be a better choice.
Purple Hawk is a must play
My first time playing this course. I will definitely be playing this course again soon. Challenging but fair. Rate of play was very good.
Course needs lots of work
Fairways were flooded and roped off every other hole. Water is all over the course very inconsistent. Last year was WAY better hopefully they can fix it.
Good value if under $25
Pleasantly surprised to see all new golf carts!
Greens were fast for April golf, always a good thing. The Hawk is always a little soggy especially this time of year.
early season
It is early season so many of the fairways were wet, but we could use carts. The greens were quick for this time of year.
It was a fun outing in windy weather.
Decent small town course with bar atmosphere
Clubhouse is more of a bar with a small pro shop downstairs.
Pretty basic layout with some more interesting water holes.
It rained some before we played but the course was still surprisingly wet. A couple times, my cart had some trouble getting through the wettest areas. Some have suggested the course doesn't drain real well so it was maybe from the unusual amount of rain we've had this year that hasn't fully drained yet.
Tree lined fairways, some on the narrow side, but even the most inaccurate tee shots are usually only punished with a punch shot.
Bunkers on most holes but not a ton (about 35 total). However, the "sand" in the traps was more like dirt from a baseball infield. Almost every bunker was also partially flooded still from the recent rain. But to their credit, we could see that they had all been raked that day, which helped some.
Greens were in good shape. Speed was moderate-to-quick but probably would have been faster if there was more sun to dry them out.
It was surprisingly busy with waits on every hole.
Difficult to judge... Weather or lack of care?
I selected this course based on the reviews. The course staff was friendly when we got there. The carts were dirty and dated. The fairways were rough with deep ruts. They looked good but the assumption is that with the weather we had this year, the fairways too the brunt of the heavy rains. Thought we were going to total the cart driving on them and some of the cart paths. The rough was thick enough to punish but cut short enough to find your ball with relative ease. Greens were really fast and in pretty good shape. Course layout was good. Needs some work and updates but can get back to the 4 star course we were looking for.
Good Challenge For Average Golfer
Play this course often. Layout is good with challenges for most levels of play. No overly easy or difficult holes. Great for the average (8+ handicapper) player but not brutal for hackers or too easy for better players.
Was a bit buggy this day (but it is August in Minnesota).
Worth the 45 minute drive from my home. Never seen it crowded or deserted.
Staff is friendly and helpful but cart girls could be a bit more attentive (often see them only once or twice in a full day). Food service is passable. Wish there were more options though.
Typical Minnesota bar atmosphere.
Love this course
Great course, a little busy on Sundays so expect at least 5 hours for group of 4.
Everything you need for a great day
Everything was outstanding-booking,staff & course.Worth the drive with golf now.
Forgot to put money back in
Course was great 15 years ago , forgot to put the money back in , deck was full of cigarette buds, bathroom old and not clean , course was just average , too bad was great .
Course fair but challenging
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Course was a nice layout but very challenging from back tees. Greens were somewhat difficult to read with multiple depressions making longer putts tough. VERY good value for the money. Only real complaint was poor condition of driving range with older, "tired" regular golf balls. Appetizers and drinks after round were excellent.
Worth the drive
Never heard of this course until I found it on Golf Now. It had good reviews so I thought I would give it a try. The course was in great condition and I enjoyed the layout. I never had a bad lie in the fairway. There are some narrow driving holes, and some that are wide open. I also liked the greens as they were also in good shape and offered fair but challenging contours. I would definitely go back there some day.
Nice course
I enjoyed it very much. Nice course. I recommend it to anyone I used golf now it was very reasonable.
Average Small Town Course
Purple Hawk Country Club does not have the ambiance or amenities of your typical country club. No well staffed and well stocked pro shop and no white table cloth dining. It's more like a typical small town golf course, open to all comers, with a bar that serves more beer than wine. The golf course itself is an interesting track, with mostly narrow tree-lined undulating fairways and some surprisingly fast greens. Water comes into play on about half of the holes, with forced carries over water to the green on several holes. Most of the holes are flanked by bunkers, but it would be inaccurate to call them “sand traps.” The crusty, compacted substance filling the bunkers bears little resemblance to what you'll find in the bunkers at most golf courses, especially at country club golf courses. Luckily, we were informed that a local rule allows removal of stones in the bunkers, which certainly saved us some nicks in our wedges. Despite its shortcomings, Purple Hawk is fun to play. If you keep your drives in the fairway, away from the trees and water, and respect the speed of the greens, you'll have a good time and a respectable scorecard.
sunday play with the wife
Nice course in very good shape on a very nice fall day only problem the Asian beatle's were a bit pesky.
great track!
This is a traditional layout with a great design. Challenges abound but it is a very fair golf course. The greens right now are VERY fast so you must stay below the hole to score.
Good value for average players
Course in good shape, pleasant staff. Rather easy track and a bit on the short side from the white tees...average-to-good golfers should play from the tips.
Excellent Course and Good Value
Purple Hawk is great layout, with a good mixture of moderate and challenging holes. The staff is very pleasant and pace of play was great. We finished in under four hours. The only unfortunate part was the amount of rain that took place the night before. It made for some standing water on several holes.
