A fair test
Conditions were very good. Pin locations were a bit questionable. Greens were puttable ,but slightly inconsistent. Would play and the weather was perfect.
Staff is the pits
Is there a school these guys go to to achieve a certificate in being as rude as possible at all times of the day? Pee yooo these guys are the pits!

Great Course - Somewhat Ruined By Very Rude Staff
Considering it is a muni course, it it quite nice and in decent shape. However, they have hands down the rudest, least friendly staff I’ve ever encountered in my 10 years of playing golf. And it’s seems to be that way every time I play. It’s almost as if they are doing your a huge favor by serving you. Prepare to tee off 20-30 mins late on weekends and prepare for the wrath of their staff. A shame because the course itself is pretty nice.

Great course but staff ruin the experience
Course was in great condition with a challenging layout. Every hole had a great design to it. Course really is a hidden gem. Don’t listen to those posting reviews to this course that it’s too long, or narrow, only good for the low handicapped golfer. All BS as the course is definitely challenging but can be played smart with course management. Those posting reviews like that trying to get golfers not to come which would be shame as its a great course. As far as the staff is concerned, nothing but attitude received from the minute we got at the course. The guy at the register overcharged and didn’t give a receipt. Just took the cash, makes me think there is some skimming going on. Shame since such a gem of a course but the staff ruin it.

Excellent challenge
This course is among the best I've found near NYC. Course condition was perfect. The course design was exceptional. Shaped by Seth Raynor, this 18 was once half of Essex County Country Club next door. The county has poured a lot of cash into conditioning. All bunkers were in great shape. Everything about the layout was special. Pretty hilly, so you might consider riding.

Good course, poor experience
The course is in good condition and have been pleasantly surprised with how well the greens run. One of the best I’ve played recently on a public course. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to finish a round despite two 3pm tee times as they can’t manage pace of play. Tee times routinely backed up and no rangers on course.
A challenging, hilly course but come with lots of patience for your tee box wait times.

way overpacked
would never go back to this course again. nice course but it was way over booked played 2 hole took us 1 1/2 hours. we were supposed to tee off at 4:08 but do to crowding we didn't tee until 4:50. then they did not even give us twilight tate and charged 72. we called after the 2 nd hole and were refunded our money and left. I will never go back

Disaster
We got to the course for our 1:04 tee time, do be informed that they were over one hour behind VZ schedule!! This has never happened to me in 30 years of Bew Jersey golf.
Totally unacceptable!! Ruined one of my rare days off from work. This should simply not ever happen when there is no weather event.

Making it my Local
Francis A. Byrne is a gem for its proximity to the city. It’s late spring early summer conditions show the staff and maintenance crew have been upholding very high standards even through Covid and the socio-political dumpster fire we are in. Hackers need to replace their divots in fairways and ballmarks on the greens but otherwise the place has resemblance and feeling of a private club. The course layout favors the cool nature and deer families that really take you out of the day to day and let you enjoy the round. Hats off to the Francis A. Byrne staff. See next week!

Great classic course, in fantastic shape post COVID pause, questionable staff
This is one of the few public Charles Bank's designed courses. Ironically Hedrick field about 10 minutes away, also operated by Essex county, is another one.
It is an incredible old school layout, and a bit lengthy for the era. Beautiful green complexs, and a priority on shot placement. I highly recommend to anyone just off the quality of the layout. Now, with the COVID layoff the course is in better shape than I have ever seen it.
A forewarning, while the golf is great, the staff leave quite a bit to be desired .. to put it kindly. I have seen them close the course at 12 on a Saturday for a 2 hour rainstorm, and not tell anyone that booked tee times. They close the gates at 8, and will aggressively tell you that they will lock you and your car inside the course. As such, there is literally no point in getting a tee time after 330 because they will be riding along before you get to 18, hollering for you to wrap it up,
Advice to management, replace the old guard with some folks that actually know how to run a golf course and the value of customer service. I worked at golf courses for 8 years throughout my youth, and the bumbling hostility of someone that is just there so they can get their free weekly round is evident.

Hidden Gem
Great course, great staff, very enjoyable for the intermediate to skilled golfer. Tight fairways and small greens. You better be throwing darts out there, oh and make sure you bring your A+ putting game bc although these green are not fast, they are challenging.
