Putnam County Golf Course

About
Nestled in the Lower Hudson Valley, Putnam County Golf Course enjoys a scenic location amid rolling hills yet it’s not too far from the city. Formerly known as Putnam National, the club was originally opened as a private club in 1959, it opened to the public when it was bought by the county in 2004 but it continues to offer the quality and amenities of a private country club. The golf course has front and back nines that are completely different from one another so be prepared to use all the clubs in your bag. Water hazards only come into play on two holes but don’t let that fool you, this course is formidable even for avid golfers. Putnam County Golf Course's final four holes are an especially challenging stretch that will test you with everything from uphill lies to a slew of strategically placed bunkers.

A unique location, but slightly disappointing.
You have to play nervously on almost every hole, worrying about carts and flying balls coming from other holes. If the holes were spaced a bit further apart, it could have been a great course. The overall condition wasn't bad, but it seems like too many local beginners play here, which was disappointing.
Great value
Fun, wide-open course. Nothing spectacular but it’s a long course with fun little details all over it. I’d come back.
Putnam County Course
Course was in great shape. My gps was not working so it was very convenient having gps on the carts
Bunkers hah pounds in them. It had poured the day and evening before we played. this also caused the greens to be a bit slower than usual. Considering the amount of rain we got, can't complain.
A good test of ability.
Have played here A LOT! It’s a great course with challenges on virtually every hole. Risk-reward is a keynote of this place. Greens have subtle breaks that definitely can affect scoring. Fairways give good lies and rough penalizes by at least one club or more. All in all a really good place to play. A definite plus is the staff. You couldn’t find a more pleasant bunch of people on any other course. Definitely a great place for a very challenging but pleasant round.
Golfing on a Holiday
Great course layout. The pace of play was surprisingly good on a day the busy due to the holiday.
Must play
This course was an amazing value. The course used to be a private club but was purchased by the county. According to gentlemen I played with said the county has done an amazing job in improvements. The layout was tough but also forgiving. Shot placement especially tee shots was critical. The greens were fast and true. I can't wait until I travel to New York again ...I will definitely play it again.
Good looks aren’t everything
When you drive a ball down the middle and it ends up in the deep left rough because the fairways slopes severely to one side - it’s time to rethink the design. When you have a par3 that is so uphill you can’t see the flagstick from the tee - it’s more like playing a giant mini-golf course. And then there are the greens - with holes cut into the middle of steep slopes making impossible to stop a putt until it’s past the pin. The course conditions were excellent. The carts had GPS - but were constantly interrupted with advertisements. The staff were very friendly, especially the cart girl. Just too many better options elsewhere.
Very Nice place, Greens were slower than normal and pace was also slow. 5hr round.
