Oak Tree/Spruce at Middle Island Country Club
About
Middle Island Country Club offers 27 holes of championship golf. It is one of Long Island's most popular public golf courses. It sits almost right at the center of the island, surrounded by the Lustengarten Nursery. The holes are divided into three nines and played as different 18-hole combinations. The Oak/Spruce Course begins with the shortest of the three nines, but there are some tricky doglegs that can make it play longer than what it says on the scorecard. Middle Island's Spruce nine was renovated in 2008, which added an island green on the par-4 seventh and more tee boxes to allow for women, seniors, and championship play. It's the most player friendly of the three nines, with wide fairways and generous greens that give you the freedom to grip it and rip it.

Not Worth $86
To be honest, I played Middle Island because I was unable to secure an early tee-time at any of the courses in my normal rotation for Saturday and Sunday mornings. I was surprised to see that the cost for the round was $86. Initially, I thought to myself "Well, there must be a good reason the cost is so high".
I played The Spruce and Dogwood nines. Neither of then were tremendous shape. On the Spruce nine, I could recall that holes #6 and 8 were the ones that jumped out at me. Unfortunately, I don't recall any of the holes on the Dogwood nine. If I am going to pay $86, my hope is that I will find more than two holes to stickout. The only memory I took with me today, was the threesome of a father and his two sons I was paired with. A nice group of guys. I hope I have the chance of playing with them again. I'm sorry I do not have the same hope of laying the course.
To summarize - You can find many more quality courses for less money. Save yourself a trip.
Yellow Jackets
Course is not playable. Their are yellow jackets nests through out both woods courses, up and down the fairways and around the greens.
You should invest more focus on treating these pest so the golfers can enjoy a full round.
Fun course to play but...
The course was in good condition and fun to play. The only issue I had was that they were putting groups out 5 minutes apart which caused a lot of pace issues.
Slow Play Central
No rangers out on course to monitor pace of play, 5+ hour weekend round, over booking groups, tee times not spread apart enough
Ball Marks Everywhere
Wonderful layout and long from the blue tees.
Greens were slow problably due to heat and humidity today. However the ball marks on the greens were absurd!!! People need to learn to fix ball marks. Also the group in front of us were sooooo slow we had to skip a hole to pass them. 3 to 4 holes wide open!!!
These young kids starting to play golf needs to learn golf etiquettes. Slow play and ball marks everywhere. Oh and these people playing loud music needs to stop!!!
Worth the drive
Course is in great shape . A few greens a little choppy but overall great course, tight challenging holes. Worth the drive out
Course in need of better landscaping
There were several spots needing grass or landscaping . The course played well and was well taken care of for coronavirus..
Great condition
Course has a (3) 9 hole layout which allowed the starter adjust accordingly to control or better the pace of play. Green and fairway is in great condition, but some tee box are bare due to probably frequency of rounds been played. Overall condition are great, layout is fun between Dogwood & Oak tree course. Clubhouse needs a update but I rather see they spend money on the course itself than there which I don’t spend much time there anyways. Love it, will keep going back if it weren’t so far out for me.
Enforcing routing by Starter
Two weeks ago we were routed by Starter to play Oakwood to Spruce. When we came to Spruce other foursomes were converging there from Dogwood. No Starter around to sort this out. Finished round playing Dogwood. Yesterday 7/9 was no problem. Which 9 are golfers directed to when they are only playing 9. Having to get involved with other golfers in this kind of issue is not pleasant and should be totally handled by Starter or Ranger
Average at best
Insanely overpriced. I played Bethpage black for less money. Bunkers are awful, greens We’re bumpy, and the course is just all dog legs and long. Good luck.
Rainy day, but good game anyway...
Course was overall pretty good. Greens we ok, a little beat up but that seems to be the case with a lot of course this year...nobody is repairing their divots!! This place is made up of 3 separate 9 hole courses. Dog is a mix of long and wide holes, Spruce is wide open with some water in play and elevated greens. Oak (my back nine this round) is the longest of the 3 and plays tighter. Also more hilly. In summary, had a great time out, always even my rounds here
Best corse I been
This was easily one of the nicest corses I played on. Staff was friendly pace of play was amazing. Very spread out. Challenging yet very fun. Very nice long holes. My new favorite spot. Beer cart could use more beers but beer is beer. Loved it!
Very good course
Staff is great and very accommodating, course is very well taken care of.
Great shape
Played here many times. Fairways and greens are in great shape. Layout of all three nine holes is fair and challenging. Tee boxes and sand traps need work.
Fun course
Course was in good shape. The three 9 hole setup is Challenging. I’m a senior golfer so some holes played long for me. Got off right on time. Starter had good control. Cart girl on course. Course in good shape with the exception of the idiots that don’t fix their green pitch marks. Will play again. .
