Spruce/Dogwood at Middle Island Country Club
About
Located almost in the center of Long Island, the aptly named Middle Island Country Club is one of the area's most popular public golf courses. The 27-hole layout is divided into three nines that are played in 18-hole combinations. The Spruce/Dogwood begins with a front nine that underwent a major renovation in 2008. An island green was added to the par-4 seventh and another major addition was new tee boxes to accommodate women, seniors, and championship play. Middle Island Country Club's Spruce nine boasts generous fairways and large greens where there is plenty of room to grip it and rip it. Take advantage of the scoring opportunities on this nine because the Dogwood nine gets much more challenging. The back nine is a formidable test with narrows fairways and greens with surprising breaks that will have you wondering how you "just missed" it.

Interesting layout
After playing here several years I can see the money that they have put into this course and have made great changes to improve it. I think perhaps it's just that my golf game has elevated and I would rather play on much more pristine courses that don't cost much more than what I paid for Middle Island. Don't like being penalized for missing the green by just a bit and having to chip off of crabgrass or patches of dirt. The sand bunkers on the Dogwood were mostly dirt and not sand. They have been that way for a while. The fairways were Immaculate and the greens were just fair and true. I guess if my game was so elevated I'd be hitting greens and Fairways and wouldn't have a beef. I hate to give this course a negative review ,so I will say this, if you have never played it, it is definitely worth a shot.
if they could get the greens faster and fix the traps this course would be 5 star.
Challenging
Long course in average shape. I'm guessing the long holes keep the shorter hitters away. There's a challenging 470 yard par 4.
This course has 3 nine hole courses to choose from for your round of 18
With new management/ownership this course is one of my favorites!
Their outings are fantastic.
Their staff in the pro shop & starters are very friendly and funny.
Some of the staff are fantastic golfers. Probably no handicap. So your low handicappers love this course.
I play 5x a week at least. I love this course. Great layout !!!!
Course is in great shape
I have played this course on and off for 5 years. This year is the best shape the course has been in during that time. It is clear the management is taking pride in the course. The greens are fast and can be tough to read with slight nuances. All of that said, it is time to work on the clubhouse. It does not effect the golf but it clearly needs to be brought up to the standard of the rest of the course. It is a good test and a lot of fun. Worth playing, just needs a better 19th to finish the experience.
Golf
The course plays well and the 27 holes make for good pace of play although the course was updated still needs tlc around the course allot of bare spots
My go to course.
Have been playing this course for years. Always liked it here.
Course in very good shape
Staff extremely professional and helpful
Will definitely play again
Middle Island Country Club
I have been playing here for years and this is the best shape I have seen it in, great layout and challenging.
Nice track
The golf is very nice. The clubhouse and grill room leave something to be desired. All in all, I'd play here again. And again
Mislead
Knowing it's that time of year for aerating I called the course to inquire if they had done so yet. I was told they did the greens on the one course and they weren't using that one, and that the others were fine. Unfortunately when we arrived we found that the entire course had been aerated and the greens were terrible. I wish I would have been told that in advance. Overall it's a good course and a decent value.
Sandy
The greens were covered in sand. With the damp conditions the sand would stick to the ball.
Well kept course
Played here many times and the course is always is good shape. Considering it was March in NY was happy with the way the greens were. Would definitely play again.
Very early in the year and the greens were a bit beat up, but that was expected. Fairways were in good condition.
Not bad for a winter round
First time playing here.
3- nine hole courses.
I enjoyed the layout and you can't expect much for a February round.
I can see that in season the course would be nice to play.
I understand they are quite pricey tho.
This place is ancient tho.
I would not pay $60 in season to play here
