Spruce/Dogwood at Middle Island Country Club
About
Located almost in the center of Long Island, the aptly named Middle Island Country Club is one of the area's most popular public golf courses. The 27-hole layout is divided into three nines that are played in 18-hole combinations. The Spruce/Dogwood begins with a front nine that underwent a major renovation in 2008. An island green was added to the par-4 seventh and another major addition was new tee boxes to accommodate women, seniors, and championship play. Middle Island Country Club's Spruce nine boasts generous fairways and large greens where there is plenty of room to grip it and rip it. Take advantage of the scoring opportunities on this nine because the Dogwood nine gets much more challenging. The back nine is a formidable test with narrows fairways and greens with surprising breaks that will have you wondering how you "just missed" it.

No bang for the buck
Course needs some work. Sand traps were more like concrete bunkers. Greens need to be rolled. Would not play here again for the price.
outstanding value
fairways are wide and plush ! greens are fast. two 9 hole courses are playable for anyone but beginners, I was paired with one. clubhouse was extremely clean !staff was most cordial. course is convenient to the L. I. E. ,worth the trip, you will have fun !!!!
Better than expected!
Started out on 440 Par 4 - from the whites!!! Challenging but fair - great greens, ran true...really enjoyed the round and the facilities, will be going back next week.
Simple golf in Long Island
I am from Northeast PA and was in LI for the weekend and wanted to play golf. I'm not familiar with the courses in the area or price but I was lucky enough to get the 24.00 deal, so I was wonderful for the money. It is a pretty typical municipal course in my eyes. Not overly manicured but not under, nice course size. It can be a long course if you play from the tips, or it could be easier if you play from the whites. The greens are slow. They are perfect speed for a municipal course. You can tell this course is taken care of by the club, but unfortunately not by the players. I really did enjoy my time at the course. I will definitely play there again if given the opportunity.
Good Shape
Greens were rather slow even for me. Staff are not very friendly. Course was wide open (in terms of golfers). Gas Carts and no GPS.
Middle Island
Course is in much better shape than years past.
The Golf Now fees were way too high!
Solid, Fun Course with Quite a Few Really Great Holes
First time playing the course and I was very happy with the experience. I got the tee time as a Hot Deal and it was more than reasonable. I got to the course and was able to get right out as a single. The front 9 (Oak Tree), was relatively narrow but fair and even if you end up wayward, you can find your shots. The 9th hole was the most memorable on this 9...otherwise, just some doglegs and a few challenging par 3s. The second nine (Spruce) had a little more character, especially the last 4 holes. The course is relatively long from the White Tees, and roughly 7000+ from the back tees so its a good challenge, but fair too. The course was in very good condition and the greens were rolling good, just not overly fast. Overall, I was very happy with the course and will look to play it again.
Meh..... Not impressed
3- nine hole layout! First time there! Wasn't very impressed by the course!
The club house looks very beat up! Starter assumes everybody knows the names of the 3 courses (we did not) and where to go! When we asked him where our first 9 hole course we were starting at was, he looked at us like we were stupid! There is no signage to show golfers where to go, only when you get to the tee-box is there your usual yardage, hole number and then the name of the course! They did however spray paint on the cart path, be it at least 10 years ago , I later noticed, the name of the course and and arrow pointing in a direction!! Barely visible let alone legible!
It was 90' out! No water coolers out n about around the course! Saw one water fountain! Cart girls were nowhere to be seen in the 18holes we played! Saw them as we were checking in, but that was it!!
Good Course
Greens and in general, course is in good condition. Will play it again.
Great Value- excellent course!!!
Got a hot rate on a Friday afternoon through golfnow....and honestly couldn't have been happier. Even at full price...this course is a steal! You feel like you're playing in the sandhills of North Carolina rather than Long Island. The course is built through a pine forest...no homes on the course...very scenic and peaceful. Greens were in good shape- a touch slow- but not too bad. If in the area...take the time to get out on Middle Island like I did...you will not be disappointed!
Great Experience
Played Spruce and Oak. Both courses in great shape. Pro shop staff very friendly. Starter doesn't seem to like his job. Will definitely be back.
worth the ride
I was on tee box had issue at work . Told guy in proshop they put our clubs away said when u come back we get you right out and they did. Should be all you need to know . To often courses forget things happen and golf while important unless you on pga doesn't pay the bills.
A hidden gem
I was extremely pleased with my last round. The green were in great shape. Be forewarned, they look like they should break several feet but on 15 out of 18 greens straight at the cup should do you just fine.
The bunkers need some work for a crisp look on the edges. But let's face it, for a public course they would get trashed by people walking up the sides of the bunkers as opposed to walking in and out via the low points.
worth the ride
Nice course good condition finished in less than 4 hours a pleasure to play will come back
Nice layout
Nice lay out and the pace of play was good. PLayed the round in 3 hrs 20 min. Course was in great shape.
Good course but a little high proced
Course has always been great, good conditions. Since new ownership years ago it's been over priced unfortunately but worth a treat.
Challengin & interesting
Had a quick and pleasant round. Because of weather , course empty finished in 2 HRs
A great weather day in DEC. 2014 on the East Coast
Who knew we would have another great weather day in DEC. on the East Coast. Got there a little ahead of my tee time to loosen it was still crisp out in the mid AM. The pace of play was great only caught up to the group ahead on the 8th. hole and to my surprise the slower group let us play through on the turn. The shape of the course was as anyone would expect for this time of year in the east the bunkers were hard and most had water in them from the recent rain as I was in a few any way it was a good time for all and hopefully we'll have another warm spell
Happy Holidays and a happy & Healthy 2015 !
Bonus golf day in late Autumn
Middle Island goes from a very good golf experience to an excellent one when it is not crowded. The course is in excellent condition for any time of year and better than we expected for the last day of Nov. The course presents a challenge for all golfers. High handicappers can have a good time also. The water hole on Spruce is a great challenge and lots of fun. The GPS on the carts are a great help.
