Spruce/Dogwood at Middle Island Country Club

About
Located almost in the center of Long Island, the aptly named Middle Island Country Club is one of the area's most popular public golf courses. The 27-hole layout is divided into three nines that are played in 18-hole combinations. The Spruce/Dogwood begins with a front nine that underwent a major renovation in 2008. An island green was added to the par-4 seventh and another major addition was new tee boxes to accommodate women, seniors, and championship play. Middle Island Country Club's Spruce nine boasts generous fairways and large greens where there is plenty of room to grip it and rip it. Take advantage of the scoring opportunities on this nine because the Dogwood nine gets much more challenging. The back nine is a formidable test with narrows fairways and greens with surprising breaks that will have you wondering how you "just missed" it.

Good course
Played the course for the first time. Good layout for the two 9 holes I played. Will keep going back, since this course is just 12 minutes from me.
A bit over priced. But overall very good
As mentioned I think it’s a bit over priced but overall I love this course. Pace of play has been good everytime I’ve played there. Course is very well maintained greens are good. I wish it was a bit less expensive.
Very disappointed with conditions
My friend made the tee time and we were again not allowed to play the Spruce course. This is the 3rd time that we were not allowed to play this course. The others are nothing special. This is the last time that I will play there considering what they charge. The starter was especially rude to us. We were told that the Spruce was closed for maintenance but saw people on the course when we made the turn.
Good pace for Saturday
Good pace of play for a very busy Saturday morning. Fairways were in great shape. Tee boxes and greens were slightly beat-up, but it is mid-summer. Do wish there was more sand in the traps.
Horrible greens horrible starter
Course is not worth the $93 that they charge. Greens are in atrocious shape with holes cut horribly and ball marks everywhere. Starter was super unfriendly gave us a hard time and we still teed off late. 5+ hour round. Used to be much better.
Needs work
1. Expensive for what you get
2. Staff in club house was friendly
3. Starter had an attitude. Doesn’t smile
4. The worst practice mats at driving range I’ve ever seen. Holes in all mats. I got small bucket 12 of the balls were split out of 30.
5. Tee boxes were horrible
6. Fairways decent
7. Greens horrible, would everyone just fix their ball marks already
8. bumpiest round driving around I’ve ever had. The cart paths need to be repaved.
9. I believe it’s under new management as per sign. I hope they will use the very expensive greens fees to fix it up. Could be very nice.
Plays like a 35$ round not $75
Stuck behind multiple five person groups, rangers did absolutely nothing. The course itself is well maintained but for the amount of money it cost to play here it shouldn’t take almost 3 hours to get through the first 9 holes.
Slow and not in great shape
Greens are littered with ball marks, bunkers are poor and starter is miserable. For 93 a round the clientele does not show. Range is a mess. How do clubs get muddy off of mats. Constant slow play.
A nice day
MICC is one of my favorite layouts that has experienced some rough times in the past. Currently the courses in OK condition. The fairways are good. The tee boxes are showing some ware but it is late July. So that can be forgiven. Since the last time I played there, there was a significant amount of sand added to the bunkers, making them very fluffy and full. There is crabgrass intruding into those bunkers, and there is crabgrass in a lot of the rough areas that should to be dealt with in order to raise this up to a truly top shelf experience also the greens need some attention as they were extraordinarily slow when greens get as slow as these were the normal breaks that you would see on them just aren’t there, all in all I would recommend playing here knowing that you’re going to have slow greens, but the pace of play was so good that I wouldn’t hesitate to go there early on a weekday that and the actual course layout is one of the best on LI. IMO.
Too Bad It's So Far
If I lived 15 minutes from this course, I would play here every day. I feel like I am playing on a private course when I tee off in the mid-afternoon. No one bothers me from behind or slows me down from ahead. The course is kept in great shape. I love the experience and the diversity between the upper courses (Oak and Dogwood)and the lower course (Spruce).
