COVID Golf
I knew (due to the corona virus) we'd have to walk and there would be restricted access to the club house, but when you spend a considerable amount of money you expect there to be a course director asking for confirmation numbers and tee times or at least directing you to the first tee. Instead it seemed as though we could have walked onto the course and had no questions asked. This may have been the case, as there were large groups of kids playing that were constantly hitting into us. Driving range and putting green were closed! Also, after wrapping up nine holes you expect again to have refreshments and food at the halfway house, but there was nothing being offered at 4:30pm. The tee boxes were chewed up and the sand traps were not maintained, but the fairways and greens were very clean! The course with challenging for an intermediate player and overall its a great course. I'd recommend going at an earlier time if you want to play with more regular golfers and have potentially a more "normal' experience in terms being treated like your money mattered to the club.
1st round of this year
Course was in good shape. The greens were rolling very well. No carts (yet) because of the current restrictions, but it was a nice day for a walk. I enjoyed it because it didn't feel as rushed as riding a cart can sometimes feel. The course us hilly in spots, but I knew what I was getting in to because I've played here before. Overall an enjoyable day playing an enjoyable course. The staff was welcoming and friendly, from the check in guy to the maintenance guys on the course, everybody was pleasant. A+ in my book
Great course under new ownership
I was informed a new owner has taken over this once beautiful course and has his work cut out for him getting it back in shape after the last owners let it go. That being said, I very much enjoyed the course (although I’m going into counseling with my Driver) and because of that the course played difficult. If you don’t drive it to the correct side you’re usually chipping out. Some blind shots. Very hilly, but not a detriment. I love a challenging course and this was, but again, I just had a crappy day driving the ball. Only 6200 yds from tips, but plays longer if you don’t hit it in right areas. Greens were in good condition and rolled very well. Blue tee boxes need help, but otherwise loved the course. I’m told the new owner is a great guy and will get course back in tip top shape soon. Will absolutely play again soon.
Good course
Course was in good shape minus the tee boxes. Greens were in very good shape. Course is very tight. Good test of skill
Somers National
Great course... played during Covid-19 and the greens were fantastic. Raised cups but that didn’t bother me.
Loved the mix of holes... great par 5’s and 3’s, a few short driveable par 4’s. Tee boxes were messy but rather would have that over the greens being a mess. Really enjoyed coming here and drove 75 minutes to get there, but would do it again for sure
Probably should just it down
I would covert this in to condos. Place needs a complete makeover
Somers National
Great course... fantastic greens... excellent mix of holes. Great par 5s and 3s. Lot of uphill/downhill and a nice variation of shots. Would definitely play there again
Up&Down hill course while walking.
It was great time playing this course. I used to play this golf course with a golf cart. In this unusual season, I played by foot. It was not easy to go up and down the hills. It was a good time relax and enjoy not much stressful moment while I was playing at this beautiful golf course.
Somers National
Nice course
tight fairways
short
good greens
poor tee boxes
Beauty at a price
Somers is a classic little mountain golf course. It features elevation changes in virtually every hole, narrow sloping fairways and spectacular views of the surrounding hills. Do not be chives by the short yardages on some of the holes. A lack of length is compensated for with changes in elevation and fairways that are slivers of hope a mere 200 yards beyond the tee box.
A couple of holes feature landing areas that are criminally narrow, and the fun starts with the first two holes. However, the greens are large targets, which is fortunate as many of the approaches are severely up or down hill.
This is a difficult course the first time around. Local knowledge is key. Yardages to doglegs, hazards, and out of bounds are a mystery. Sprinkler heads aren’t labeled with yardage. The 100yd and 150 us markets are small and buried in the fairways. There are no stripes on the cart paths.
The tee boxes are this courses downfall.. It’s tough to find truly level ground on many of the tee boxes , for that matter it’s tough to find grass on the tee boxes . It’s early in the season, but for a club that sells memberships and bills itself public/private, the course could be in better shape.
Greens are enormous relative to the test of the course . They roll fast and true. Unfortunately the cretins that frequent the track aren’t familiar with the practice of repairing their ball marks. The signature hole is a double dogleg 624 yard par 5 with an approach over water.
Overall, a challenging course that is let down a bit with shoddy maintenance and a lack of attention to detail. If ever a course needed a diagram of the hole on every tee, it this one. I’ll come back just to salvage some pride.
Not even worth the $25
Played here late last year...tee boxes were a disaster, and the ground was rock hard. Wanted to give it another chance earlier in the season this year.
Speculations were correct and this place was still a mess. Tee boxes were even worse. The drainage is non existent. Nothing but swamp. Idk what was worse, the ground last year or this year.
Just seems like no effort goes into maintaining the grounds. Sucks because its a great layout and a very aesthetically pleasing course. A little effort would go a long way. The recent Covid19 closure, or maybe the entire past off season would have been a perfect time. Guess they dont see it that way.
Nice course layout
2nd time playing there recently. Course still needs some TLC and staff was out doing work and seeding today, Really enjoy this layout. No 2 holes alike, with lots of hills, and elevated tee boxes and greens. Tight fairways and enough water to add additional challenges. Been walking the course....great if you’re looking for a workout
Very good course at a price point
The course itself is really a lot of fun: narrow in most places, lots of severe doglegs that put a premium on shot placement, a lot of variety in hole design. Don’t expect to walk on the course for the first time and shoot a low number. I think after I play it a few more times the layout will be even more interesting. Those are the pros.
The cons are that the course really needs work in conditions of the fairways, a few greens and almost every tee box. There are too many bare spots to overlook and the tee boxes were simply awful.
If you are looking for lush and plush, you will be disappointed.
But in comparison to other public courses ( although it’s a semi private club) I would definitely come back and play it again, as long as it was priced at the same as the Westchester County courses. But I wouldn’t pay more than that.
The staff was nice, and the amenities were closed, and looked average to good but not spectacular.
If you get a decent price, definitely play, it will hold your interest. But buyer beware.
