Unmown fairway at Somers Pointe West! Photo submitted by Natmare on 07/05/2013
course not kept up greens are very poor condition
Like layout. Everybody is friendly. but course needs help. Greens has fungus problem brown and dried up. Fairway patchy
Need attention
Challenging picturesque and narrow course with doglegs left and right. Some areas country club quality except for some spotty fairways, tees great shape, unfortunately 5 or 6 greens troubled by fungus disease. A few fairways have thin and soggy areas. Cart paths need attention as some were gravel or dirt.
Sadly, this could be a great course with proper management.
I would not recommend it.
Course Needs Extensive Maintenance
I had heard about this course for some time and was curious to play it. My partner and I were quite disappointed.
The good: Course is quite challenging; going uphill and down dale. it wanders through the grounds with almost zero side-by-side fairways, so if you hit into the the woods, the ball is gone. Fairways are narrow with little rough before the woods. Most green are fast and crowned, so if you roll too far you will roll off. Course requires great shot accuracy -- definitely NOT a place for beginners or those with accuracy issues.
The bad: Tee boxes were terrible -- very uneven; apparently they haven't seen a roller in years. Many greens are badly worn (either by too much or too little watering or by poor mowing); again, simple maintenance has been neglected. And apparently nobody who plays this course believes in repairing ball marks on the greens (and the maintenance people do nothing to fix them, either).
Some distances are hard to gauge; there are no markers on the sprinkler heads and no 150-yard poles. There are marker stones (rectangular, not circle) on the sides for 200, 150 and 100 yards, but I question the accuracy of some of the positions. Some fairways have been devastated by water damage -- often you are playing off of dirt with barely any grass to be seen for yards around. Numerous drain and service covers on course are broken or missing. And some sand bunkers have nothing more than dirt while others are over-run with weeds.
Design of several holes was ridiculous -- The 553-yard par-5 fifth has a double dog-leg with a blind, completely unnecessary water hazard that is immediately adjacent to the front of the green (that slopes INTO the hazard!); the ninth has a completely blind, massive water hazard that cannot be seen from the tee (nor could anyone in their right mind anticipate that a designer would put one at that location).
On-course bathrooms (away from clubhouse) were locked and beverage vending machines were either empty or broken -- a completely unacceptable situation in the heat of mid-August.. On a hot day (88 degrees) my partner and I noticed exactly one water dispenser -- and that was on the 16th tee (when it could provide minimal aid); glad we brought our own. We had to improvise about the lack of toilets.
Signs for each hole offer little guidance as to the actual layout -- a huge disadvantage on a course with many hidden water hazards. Maps on the scorecard were tiny and sometimes misleading as to location or extent of hazards.
Overall, the lack of maintenance made this course a disappointing experience. I got a great deal from GolfNow so the price was very reasonable, but I would only consider returning to Somers Pointe if I saw another extraordinary deal on GolfNow (and even then I would have to think long and hard about returning).
Challenging holes on about half the holes.slightbreatheron other half.
Really like this course. Nice private club experience.
Interesting layout, but too many holes can't use driver.
Most difficulty is on greens. Fast with subtle breaks which are hard to guage. Fairways are kept well, but there are several areas which have had water damage due to rainy season. Some of the greens also have been damaged in areas. The staff was not interested in assisting golfnow customers. I asked to play with others, and they said they had nobody coming. Several minutes later they said there would be a twosome for me to join. While I was waiting, the twosome already started play, and the assistant hadn't mentioned to them that I would be joining them. "We don't know who the golfnow people are, and they might not have checked in".
I booked my tee time on 7/4 at the Somers Pointe West golf course and there was some confusion.
I booked a tee time at Somers Pointe West for July 4th a few days prior. When I arrived, I was told that the members had an outing that day. There were three other singles who also booked a time through Golfnow. We were told that the head pro there failed to check these times. They were very apologetic about it and were able to accommodate us anyhow. They started us off on the first hole, and just before we were able to putt out on the green, a staff person had come up behind us and asked us to please pick up our balls and follow him to the 10th tee because members from the outing were coming up on us. This was somewhat of an inconvenience (especially since I had a 10 foot birdie putt awaiting me!) We ran into a foursome in front of us on the 10th hole that were very slow. After a few holes of waiting on them, they allowed us to play through. We did not find the course to be in good shape at all. The tee boxes were not level. The ball was always either above or below your feet on the tee. The fairways were not mowed at all. It felt like playing out of the first cut of rough at times. The bunkers were hard as cement and not raked. The course was not marked well at all. It was very difficult to find yardage markers, and they only had the 150 or 100 markers out there. The only thing I did like about this course, were the greens. Lastly, we were unable to use the bathroom facilities because we did not know the combinations to get in. I suppose that only members are allowed in, and if that is the case, then don't offer tee times for the general public through Golfnow.com. Would I recommend this course to anyone? Not to anyone that appreciates the great game of golf.
Why is Golfnow censoring reviews??
I wrote a review twice for this course, but Golfnow has yet to publish it. I feel that only positive reviews are being posted for this course.
The course was ok, but too many blind shots. Plus my car was damaged in the parking lot with no security cameras. I have to pay for bumper damage because someone in the lot did not know how to drive.
great valve
great course . Have to think about clubs to use. Fairways are tight on holes which requires putting tee shot in play.
holes open up . 12 13 and 14 are great viewing holes.
price was worth it.
This course has very good greens .
Is hard to keep the ball in fairway on some tee shots .
