A Fun Challenge
We had a great time playing this course! It was challenging but fair. From my golfshot preview of it it didn't look that interesting but the reality of the course was very interesting indeed. The course was in excellent condition. However, it's a must that you either stay in the fairway or watch your ball carefully until it stops. The rough was a bit high on most holes so balls in the rough were easily lost or at best usually took a while to find and ended up where I didn't expect them to be. There are some blind holes where it's not possible to keep an eye on it so you might lose a few balls.
I started off the round on the second tees thinking that the forward tees would be too easy--Not! For the second half played the forward tees and enjoyed that much better.
Wish I could have taken advantage of the discounted replay round to give this course another go round. Definitely recommend this course and would love to play again.
Greens execellent but overall experience underwhelming
we teed off at 7:18 to avoid mid-day heat. Fairways' grass condition was average but they were water-saturated from night watering. Traps were also saturated and not yet raked so full of foot prints etc..
The greens were excellent; speedy and very challenging.
Many holes border the highway so not a peaceful experience.
I suspect that the Royal Course is in better shape.
Amazing views
Our first time playing on this course. It was advertised as the easier of the two Kaanapali courses. It might have been but the wind almost blew us off the hill. It seem like every hole was going against the wind. The views were spectacular in the course was in decent shape. After four hours we were both worn out!
Royal Kaanapalli is a great track....
Absolutely beautiful layout with great views of Lanai and Molokai across the channel. Stimulating layout with some great holes mixed in with ample scoring opportunities. Course was generally in great condition with the exception of the sandtraps which have not been reworked after last week's heavy rains.
This is a course that you need to play at least once and is a highlight for your trip to Maui. Unfortunately, the folks at Billy Casper golf know this and charge accordingly - hard to find a real good price on Royal Kaanapali. For the money, the Kai course is a better deal.
Red Headed Step Child
A once excellent course has been long neglected.
Turn over in staff and extremely poor customer service had a negative affect on my experience.
The Kai at Kaanapali has so many issues, I'll just jump to the glaring:
- Fairway has brown spots on almost every hole.
- there is no first cut rough; the rough that remains is no longer cut daily; A good drive that rolls out just a few feet in the rough can easily get lost ( causing unnecessary lost balls and delay of play).
-There is tall grass weeds growing on tee boxes AND greens/fringes.
- Several greens had large craters/dead patches and/or ant hills that have nearly destroyed the putting surfaces.
- Bunkers are in terrible condition… Weeds growing out of many of them… Felt from the bottom coming up, due to hardly any sand left in most of them.
- Price is extremely high for the condition of this course: $80 for super twilight!
If you're going to spend over $130 for a round of golf… Might as will head up to the bay course and get your moneys worth and excellent service to boot.
Also worth noting, I have been a long time loyal customer to Kaanapali golf courses, but this last visit I was treated rudely by a staff member and I will not return.
There's a few great employees-- notably the boys downstairs--that remain here provide awesome service, unfortunately the "bad apples" spoiled my experience.
Rumor is the Kai is about to shut down and Kaanapali will be converted to a 27 hole course. A rebirth will be excellent opportunity for this once great facility.
Poor customer service and too expensive
This is the second time I played this course and I must admit, I'm not impressed. I generally give everyone the benefit of doubt but this course and management have really let themselves down.
The course is not in a good shape at all (recently punched) and the customer service is appalling. It's a very touristy course but the mantra 'the customer is always right' does not resonate with the management. They love their rules even though it didn't make any logical sense. Let me explain what I mean. The course was quiet and I wanted to play a round mid afternoon. My wife was with me and she loves to drive the cart and read a book. I was the only player teeing off on the given tee time but they insisted that my wife would need to pay the rider fee if she she wanted to join me. I was going to have a free seat on the cart irrespective, ruling it was policy that she would need to pay. A little practical common sense goes a long way and I couldn't believe that they made us pay. Watch out - the course will bleed you dry before giving anything back.
What a Hot Deal!
We loved our Kaanapali Royal golf round. Thank you, GolfNow!
Lahaina royal course
Course was nice, however I've played courses that were considerably nicer for half the price! There are three other courses on Maui (maui nui, Pukalani, and Kahili) that have the same if not better views for half and Evan 1/3 of the price! All of the on course staff was great, very friendly and helpful! That is until the round was over! Me and my son went upstairs to get a ice tea and a coke. The bar tender asked what we wanted and then disappeared for 10 minutes! After finally getting our drinks he never refilled or ever offered to refill then despite sitting empty for another 10 minutes!
All and all, course and golf staff were great but the bar sucked!
Nice track
Hard to be objective when playing behind a five some. Group should have moved up two tee boxes. Never saw a Marshall. Nice track. Tough to wait on every tee box.
Nice Track
We found the courses to be fun and challenging. We played the Kai in the morning and the Royal in the afternoon. The rough was a bit long on the day we played, so be very cognizant of where the ball lands if you stray off the fairway. The fairways were in excellent conditions, mowed to a uniform height and are well maintained. The greens rolled true, but appeared to have been dyed to uniform color. The provided GPS on the carts was beneficial. The GPS provided an overview of each hole. The morning staff was above excellent. The Pro Shop and outside service personnel greeted and treated us like we were members. My bias is showing regarding the warm up range, the balls are limited flight and a person is mandated to hit off mats. A note of caution, the cart fleet is old. Once your cart indicates a sign of low battery charge, call for a replacement.
Straight drives, but ball lost
Had a great time and enjoyed the panoramic views which are so unlike our home playing grounds . One frustration for my husband was losing Three balls on beautiful looking drives that could not be found when we got to the presumed landing site. We didn't want to hold up play so he just dropped a ball. I don't think a mongoose stole the ball, but it was frustrating!
Greens airified and sanded
I would not have booked a tee time if I would have known greens were just airified and heavily sanded. We just played automatic 2 putts. Once flagged was pulled, you could not even see the hole if you had a long putt.
Fun time
Overall, a good experience. Some good ocean views but the greens had recently been sanded so that was about the only negative I can say.
Customer service
I've played this course a lot and don't remember the
staff in the pro shop so moosh, the 2 girls behind the counter...no personality what so ever....no hi how are you,,how's your day going so far,,, have a good round,,,
nothing just give me your money, the worst customer service i have ever seen there!!!
A terrific day in Paradise
This was as enjoyable of a round as I've had in a long, long time. A top-10 experience because of so many factors.
For starters, we played with with director of instruction - David Havens. He was awesome. So helpful, so friendly and a great way to play with course because of his helpful knowledge of the place.
The greens were spectacular. And I don't say that lightly. They were as good as anything I've seen, maybe ever. They were so pure and nearly perfect. You knew you'd always get a true roll.
The layout is great too. You can spray it a little off the tee and get away with it, but the holes are a great collection and the par 3s are particularly memorable. When/if you hit it in the water on the 17th hole (it's a real possibility) make sure you take a look at the sign that's in the pond. Classic.
Take some time to enjoy the views of the ocean. You can see if from almost everywhere on the course.
Good resort track
Expect to pay resort prices (esp for Maui)! That being said, the course is in good shape. No issues with staff or pace of play
Nice views
Good overall, greens difficult to read. Cart gps really helped.
Sand traps were hard with minimum sand.
Overall very good course.
bring your coupons and discounts otherwise not worth it
unfriendly staff (and that buggs me); no walking aloud; slow play even for midweek and the Marshals did nothing about it; golf range is lousy (mats, irons only, lousy staff); on to the game..fairways are WIDE OPEN with the exception of one; if you stay at a Westin Resort discounts and coupons available otherwise it's not worth the regular rate. Also bring your clubs and water bottle otherwise you will get fees here and fees there. After 18 they do give you a nicely cooled towel but I just can't see paying $4.50 for a 6oz beer at the bar.
Slow play and not very memorable course
I got a really good deal on an internet tee time website so I played this course or a greatly reduced rate. It is not worth the full rate. The course was pretty challenging with some of the holes being fairly long and we had a strong breeze and rain on some. There were not any really memorable holes. Number 5 goes by the beach and number 17 is a par 3 over water. Overall it's an ok course that I would play again but not for the normal rate. The pace was also incredibly slow since there was a birthday outing of 40 people in front of us. The ranger said they were all slow and he couldn't do anything. I finished before dark so I was not too upset but there were a lot of people behind me that I'm sure didn't finish. Kapalua courses are MUCH nicer and can get on Bay for about the same rate.
Original Robert Trent Jones Old-Style Tract in Excellent Condition
Came back here to play after 12 years or so. Still an excellent test of golf even with relatively moderate trade wind conditions. Found a good deal on Golfnow, and then got another discount when we showed up at the course: $ 60 green fee which is very reasonable for a course of this standing. The back nine par is 34, with 7 par 4's and 2 par 3's, and the front nine par is 37 with 3 par 5's and 2 par 3's. I can't remember the last time I played at any course with this unusual break-down of holes. The ocean views are excellent and you can't beat the ideal location. Also nice to play on Bermuda-type greens with grain.
Thanks for your feedback.
