Shanty Creek
About Shanty Creek
The 5,000 acres of Shanty Creek Resorts are spread among three villages - Cedar River, Schuss and Summit, each with at least one golf course, restaurant and accommodations galore. The Summit is arguably home base with the Lakeview Lodge housing the Lakeview Restaurant, the spa and the Legend and Summit golf courses. The resort added the Hawk's Eye course and accommodations across the street in 2021.Facts

Cedar River is a solid course which an average golfer can enjoy
After playing The Chief nearby, this course was a relief. It is typical resort golf in Northern Michigan with some refreshing design touches and a couple of oddities. The 13th hole needs to be viewed from the green on backward to the tee before you play it and 18 is 604 yards from the tips. Maintenance was above average. One or two greens differed noticeably in speed from the other 16. I'd recommend it and play it again myself.
Needs a ranger
Get rid of hugr green side traps! Get a ranger to stop golfers hitting mulligans every hole!
The course is very picturesque.
Tee boxes were not level or very well kept. Greens were too spongy and did not roll true.
Amazing
Greens kicked my butt but the course was awesome. Beautiful vistas on every hole. Great elevation changes. A true joy and challenge to play. Must play before you die
Great course, in not-so-great condition
Hawk's Eye has been a long time favorite course in the Bellaire/Shanty area. It offers variety, can be challenging, but is also fair and very playable. We've been playing this course for more than 10 years during and it's always been in pristine condition, until this year. We were disappointed in the fairways, and in the greens. Lots of brown patches and dead areas. Which was odd, considering the other Shanty courses we played last weekend were in fantastic shape. Hawk's Eye is still a perennial favorite, so I hope and trust the course returns to it's formerly terrific condition.
My Favorite Shanty course
Cedar River is both challenging and forgiving at the same time. Course conditions were excellent. This is our golf group's favorite Shanty course.
Great track!!!
Phenomenal design! So many great looking holes with friendly fairways and challenging and well protected greens. Elevation changes on many holes are breath taking. Good test of golf on a beautiful setting!!
Old resort course
So so course. Nothing special and there are much much better options within 2 miles. Would play as a warm up for other premiere tracks close by.
Fantastic track!!
Played late afternoon.... Only ones on course... Great rate through golf now.... Every hole was extremely asthetically appealing and was postcard worthy.... A very fair test of golf!!! Will definitely play again!!!
Northern Michigan Golf
I put the course at extremely challenging because I have a hard time hitting a strait tee shot. if you hit the ball ball strait you should score well. Lots of rolling hills and some nice elevation changes with great views of Antrim county
only one complaint
Loved this course. Great layout, wide fairways and you can score well if playing good. My only complaint (at least for the times we played it) was the pin locations. Most cups were cut in ridiculous spots. Tops of knobs in the green, bottom of slopes. It was almost impossible to get the ball close even when you hit a good shot. Other wise, the course was great. We all loved the layout.
Par 5s make the day at Cedar River
I'm a huge fan of courses like Cedar River that consist of five par 5s and five par 3s. These unique designs give players more opportunities at a career highlight, whether it be reaching a par 5 in two or sinking an ace. Cedar River's par 5s at no. 9 and no. 10 allow even average-length hitters like me the chance to reach in two. The stretch of holes no. 6-8 in an open meadow is beautiful. The Cedar River runs along the left side of the par-4 13th and par-3 14th, providing a scenic element that Weiskopf wanted to make better use of but couldn't for environmental reasons. The toughest hole on the course might be no. 18, a long par 5s with ravines and a pond. It's a strong finish for one of northern Michigan's best courses.
My favorite at Shanty Creek
I'm probably among the minority that considers The Legend my favorite course at Shanty Creek. I love its 1980s architecture. Some of its narrow fairways will make the grip-it-and-rip-it crowd used to modern designs a bit squeamish. The endless parade of elevated tees and greens makes scoring tough. Many holes bend or dogleg through the deep woods, forcing players to choose their angle of attack. The only knock on the Legend would be the tricky par-4 second hole. It's just an awkward tee shot uphill over wetland that comes too early in the round. I'd like to see the tees built up or the hole transformed into a par 3. But all is forgiven on the fourth and fifth tees, where the commanding views of Lake Bellaire help everybody forget their score.
Best golf in northern MI
Blown away by how gorgeous this course is. Elevated greens and tees throughout. Awesome view. Great playability. Difficult greens. Breathtaking views of torch lake and bellies. Truly a pleasure to play.
Deadspots and a Missing Green Parts
Lots of brown spots and dead grass over the course. One green has sod replaced and it was not careful, leaving small sand bunkers on the green.
Overall, it was a fun course.
Deceptive length, outstanding greens...
Fairly "Driver" friendly, with many lengthy second shots. Water was not an issue on more than two or three holes. Ample bunkers. Greens were awesome! Long course, with a many options...
One of my favorite courses
I play this course every time I go up north and every time I am amazed at how much I love it. There are a lot of hills and it is challenging. The 17th hole par 5, is one of my favorite holes of all time. It is just a great course.
Very nice course
I really liked this course, it was a great price for how nice it is. The only thing I didn't like is I barely got to use my driver, it has alot of dog legs or spots to layup. It has a lot of really nice holes though. Overall I will probably play this course every time I go up north.
Consistent quality
Played the Legend after playing Cedar River a few years ago. This course was consistent with the quality of the Shanty Creek courses and was consistent with other Palmer designed courses in difficulty and challenge.
While the course is aesthetically very pleasing it is also made more difficult by the frequent elevation changes, rolling fairways and uneven lies. Ultimately, when you reach the greens they are fast with many undulations. The course is quite difficult but worth a round - just be sure to bring your A game.
One of My Favorites
This course is one of my favorites, because of this scenic views. Sometimes the pace of play can be exceedingly slow due to the challenging course. Today, it took nearly five and one half hours to play because there was a group of 20 golfers in front of us and you had to wait on every hole. The course frequently offers special rates and it's a bargain if you're not in a hurry.
