I liked this course
I liked this course because it is in great shape and was challenging yet fair.
Greens great, fairway... not so much
I played yesterday on 5/27/13. The golf course is long and challenging. I expected this. The greens were quick and rolled very nice. I expected this. What I did not expect was the condition on the faiways and rough. I'm not sure if there was a disease in the grass or something of that nature. There was ground under repair marked ALL over the place. Many other areas were simply hard pan dirt with no grass at all. $70 for this course is a joke. The driving range and facilities are nice, but not that nice. Stick to Sycamore Creek, Providence, or Hunting Hawk. You'll save $20-$40 and have a similar experience.
Beautiful undulating hill side course cut through forest with plenty of water to dodge
Excellent facilities with a great view from every tee box. Water is a feature on many of the holes and accurate driving is a key to scoring low here.
Large greens with many dips and turns, but in really good condition. In fact, everything was in first class condition except for the fairways, which were patchy and uneven, with many bear areas.
A problem with a late spring apparently - with the rest of the course in a perfect state, it was a shame. I look forward to playing it again soon as I am sure the course will recover.
Pace of play was monitored closely as well, which made for an enjoyable game with no hold ups!
this course has good greens
this course has excellent greens and provides a good challenge for long and short hitters.
Great course and design, but conditions need some real attention.
I've played this course about 10 times over the years and always look forward to playing it -- good design, challenging holes but still forgiving (generally wide fairways). And, it's always been in good shape, but not this year. Played in mid-May 2013. Granted, we've had a very cool March and April, so the Bermuda hasn't really had a chance to pop. But the fairways and rough are in terrible shape - hardly any grass left to "pop" when it does finally warm up. Fortunately, the greens are still in fine condition, as were the greenside bunkers. My guess is that their maintenance budget is limited and they decided to focus on the greens, which should be the priority. Expect to play "winter rules" all summer long.
Greens pristine, fairways very thin
The greens were in the best shape I have ever seen. Smooth and lightening fast. I know it is still early in the season for Bermuda fairways, but there is quite a bit of winter kill and bare spots everywhere. It was difficult to get a decent lie even with "winter rules". They do not overseed the tees or fairways and really need to start. Hopefully the Bermuda grass will start to pop soon.
Course in bad shape
The fairways were in terrible condition, it has not been well maintained over the last few months, especially for a course I expect a lot out of. I have played here 4 times and 3 of those times I would rank it the best course in the Richmond Metro area, but this day, it was no better than Rivers Bend, and that course is terrible!
Best bang for the buck!!
Independence GC has an unbelievable practice range with multiple putting greens. The atmosphere is very friendly as well. I lost my phone and it was returned immediately. Honest people and a great course is where I want to be. Overall, 5 stars!!
Greens are good, but fairways not so much
We played a somewhat frustrating round of golf at Independence yesterday. It was a learning experience about waiting to play here until the Bermuda has come out of dormancy. The fairways were in terrible shape as you had to play most shots off of bare lies. The greens however were in really good shape. The other frustrating aspect of the round was the pace of play. The round lasted just less than 5 hours which for me is unacceptable. They need to have a marshall going around to keep the pace of play moving along. The only response we got at the turn was "sorry I just got here not sure what's going on." We have to solve pace of play or guys like myself will no longer be able to play the game. The recommend portion of this is based on playing in the summer once the fairways are back. We played last summer here and the course was in excellent shape.
Course was in terrible shape: Fairways were like hitting off clay, they had no grass.
This is a USGA course in VA and I expected the course to be in much better shape. The fairways had no grass and the greens still had airation holes from a month ago. This course needs alot of attention!
still rounding into shape
needs a little more warm weather to green up the bermuda, but a great layout and excellent facility & staff
wide open,,,
we enjoyed this course very much..... i recommend this golf course to everyone...
Fairways have no grass. Value for price paid is terrible.
Fairways have no grass. Value for price paid is terrible. Seems like they put no money into maintenance. Almost May and the course is still brown with very little grass in the middle of the fairways! Greens were in good shape but 2nd and 3rd cut are a joke.
Great course, needs work
Love this course and was really excited to play, but the course was in awful condition. I've played on public, municipal courses that were in better shape.
I would return as I assume the condition would improve. It is a fun layout and beautiful course, but I think they should reduce the green fees until the course is up to par.
Independence on Golfnow
Played on a Wednesday afternoon at a great price on Golfnow. The course was in good shape, not too crowded and the weather was great.
Green Aerated - not told before booking
I can't complain about the course for the price we paid on GolfNow hot deals - but I will say as we were leaving the course there was a foursome VERY MAD at the course staff and wanting to speak to a mgr that wasn't there. The gist was that they were very upset at the course condition (they had paid full rate).
If I had paid full price for the round I also would have been quite upset and also would have looked for a mgr as well.
Greens were brutal - no indication at all before booking that they had been aerated. Grass was very dormant and brown and thin.
Staff seemed unfriendly to me.
With all the choices of golf in the area - probably would recommend going somewhere else.
May best course to date
This is a great course with two driving Ranges, excellent greens, friendly staff and Regulation holes.
Extremely wet and airated but still a great course.
Always a great course t play. One of the top in central Virginia.
Winter golf
Greens were in great shape considering the time of year (winter). Very fast because they were a bit soggy. Dried out as we played. Fairways brown, rough cut back. Overall a great experience.
A nice, challenging layout with LOTS of sand
Got a great price to play on a Monday late morning. It was a damp day after some rain. The course was very wet. Play moved along relatively quickly. I really enjoyed the layout. Lots of bunkers along fairways and near the greens (so bring your sand wedge).
