Daily Video Tips

Hi Martin, new GolfPass member. Your Should You Play A 3-Wood? video was interesting. As an alternative, what do you think of a 9 Wood, rather than a 3 Wood or hybred?
Hi Martin,
nice and interesting video. I understand it right, that a minimum speed for the 3 wood is needed. What is the range of this minimum speed?
Thank you for your input
Reto, I’d say that minimum speed for a 15 degree 3 wood is 90 mph.
Hi Martin. I go between 90 and 100 club speed with driver. I noticed i was hitting my 18* and 15* about the same. So I replaced 18* and 15* with 1 16.5*, and added a wedge. It's my 200 club.
Good call!!
Martin:
I know this was focused on a 3-wood but how about comparing a 4H to a 4iron? I carry both and frequently use the hybrid but sometimes try the iron and just not quite sure when I should use which or if I even need the 4 iron? My current setup is D, 3, 4H 4-P, 50, 54, 60.
Hello Stan, a four iron has 21 or 22 degrees of loft, but the center of gravity is higher compared to a hybrid. The hybrid is intended to launch the ball higher at slower speeds. If your gut says it doesn’t care for the four iron, don’t force it. Leave it in the garage.
With every club do you lead with left hand right hand or both, especially at impact? Thanks. Trying get more POP off the bat.
Mario, hit hard with both hands!
Hi Martin. I don't get it. Why would a hybrid or 5 or 7 wood go farther than a 3 wood. I understand the your video shows are higher loft, but does that mean that a club with an increased degree which results in a higher strike generally travels farther than a three wood?
James, it is speed related. If you have enough speed, a three wood goes farther than a higher lofted golf club. If you don’t, there’s no benefit hitting a three wood, the launch is too low. You’re far better off getting something in the air with some loft.
Thanks for your response, Martin.
Martin,
Good evening.
Thank you for the video - you're very good at explaining.
I have a 4 iron, and a 3 wood/hybrid ...should I take the 4 iron out of my bag?
Thank you for your input.
Also, how can I enroll in the "school" that you mentioned in your video?
VR,
Bo
Hi Bo, the four iron is a club most relegate for running shots that don’t fly very high. It takes a lot of speed to get a 4 iron to fly high enough to stay on a green. If you need a flat flighted runner at your course, keep it in the bag.
Tell us about that launch Moniter you just used in the abouve video. Know about track man. Dont know your Moniter. Let us in on what it is and the $$$
ForeSight Quad. Please Google it. Great product. Thx
G'day Martin, In recent years, the 3 wood changed to A-flex shaft. My driver is now 10.5 loft, with A-flex. My irons 5 to pitching wedge, A-flex. The hybrids are 3 & 4 with regular shaft, old set. Gap wedge 52deg reg . Sand iron 58deg shaft? Loft or shaft which is best?
I’d guess that your strongest fairway club should be an A flex 5 wood. Get a professional fitting if you can.
Martin,
I was fit at True Fit and he put me in a 3 wood.
I’m 75. 3 wood Club speed was 75.5, carry 157. Total 180.
Shall I trust the fitter and keep working at it?
BTW as you point out, that was on a mat. I am not having great luck off the turf.
If you struggle with it, take it back and have them help you get it right.
