Ever since opening in the mid '90s, Arlington Heights Golf Club has been considered one of the best par-3 golf courses in Chicagoland. It is certainly one of the most unique with three holes that feature vertical-drop tee shots and two holes with uphill tee shots to the green. Although this nine-hole course is only 1,163 yards the large bentgrass tees and greens provide the feel of a full-length course. The layout has nearly 30 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on two holes. From the elevated tees you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area, including stunning vistas of the Chicago skyline. Whether you're a beginner looking to get some practice or a scratch golfer who wants to get in a quick round, Arlington Heights Golf Club is a fun and challenging option.

Excellent greens/condition, hilly

Excellent par 3 course. Not as walkable as other par 3 courses - there's roughly a 70 foot difference between the clubhouse and the 2nd/3rd green. You have downhill holes (hole 1) and uphill holes (hole 4).

This is exclusively a par 27, there are no holes longer than ~150 yards. The holes are all relatively open, nothing in forests. There are bunkers at every green, but none of the greens had bunkers in front of them, making the course very accessible to all golfers.

Practice green had work being done to it. Water was put out by the staff at the hole 5 tee box which was greatly appreciated on the 90 degree day. Pretty city views on the first tee box, pretty water views on holes 2-3, holes 5-8 were unmemorable.

Great for short game and learning the game

I’ve played Nickol Knoll 50 times. Course is in good condition. Last season, many of greens and tees were burning out. Appears the park district is putting time and $$$ into keeping the course green. Thank you!

All holes are 100 to 140 yards. Great for short irons and wedges. If you’re new to game, course is short and way less intimidating than 500 yard holes on typical golf courses. I hit into a few bunkers and they had adequate amount of sand. Lots of open tee times. Get out and enjoy! All rounds 60-90 minutes.

Practice green has burn line through entire green. It was also incredibly sloped. Not sure what architects had in mind when they created practice green. Not really indicative of greens on course.

Course is highly recommended for short game and nubies!

Good for beginners & short game practice

Nickol Knoll is a short course that’s good for both beginners and those wanting to work on their short game. Considering the amount of traffic it gets, it was in pretty good shape today. The pace of play was on the slow side, but you’ve got to expect that on a short course that’s very hilly for a Chicago area course, that gets a lot of beginners. Just go with the flow and you’ll have a good day.

Best par 3

Possibly best par three in terms of layout, in north Chicago area. Greens, early in season, could use some work. Otherwise, the perfect hour of exercise.

Perfect for Practicing Your Short Game

I really enjoy playing this course. I played for the first time in August and I’ve been back twice since then. The first time I played I got teamed up with two other people who were very nice, There were groups in front of us and we still finished in less than two hours. I’ve gone out by myself a couple times finishing in one hour. For the money, it’s a great course. And there are many things about it that make it special. Besides being a nice course, Walter Payton used to practice by running up and down what was a garbage dump before it became a golf course. There’s a shrine to him on one of the holes also beyond the green of one of the holes through the trees, you can see the entire Chicago skyline in the distance. It’s also nice as I’m only 10 minutes away. I could see this becoming a course I visit at least once a week.

Short game

Every golfer should start by going ti the range and then playing par 3 courses before playing regular courses. This course has helped me hit my irons, chipping, and putting!

Course is in good condition and very inexpensive. The pace of play can be very slow if you go at the wrong time. But I love to take my daughter there to learn the swing!!

Great course for beginners or working on short irons

I’ve played Nichol Knoll 100+ times. It’s a great course for beginners or if you want to work on wedges, sand traps, short game. Plays in about an hour, maybe a little more. On a hot deal, my wife and I played for $15 altogether. Paired with another couple and we had a great time.

Staff is courteous but once you’re on course, you’re on your own.

Highly recommended for learning the game and working short game.
