The Grove Country Club

About
Formerly known as Royal Country Club of Long Grove and Hillcrest Country Club, The Grove Country Club, or simply "The Grove," is now a part of the Royal Golf Group, which gives members reciprocal privileges at Royal Fox and Royal Hawk in Saint Charles and the Royal Golf Club in Klein Creek. At just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, the golf course is ideal for long hitters. It offers plenty of room but accuracy is still needed to maneuver past more than 60 bunkers strategically placed throughout and out-of-bounds on every hole. Water hazards also come into play on eight holes. Thousands of mature trees covering the course don't make the layout any easier either, however, the fast but fair greens and four diverse sets of tees make the Royal Country Club of Long Grove playable for a wide range of skill levels.

Prospective Member...Nope
Played as a prospective member. Nothing was very impressive other than layout.
When I first pulled in, there was at least 4 acres of dirt piled 100 feet high in the parking lot. At first I thought, oh maybe the course is being renovated...nope. According to some members in the bar, been that way all summer and no one knows where dirt is coming from.
Anyways, figured I would drop my clubs off and head to the range...nope. Range was closed because of rain (though it hadn’t rained in a few days) and there were giant logs scattered all over the range. Target practice?
Course was cart path only (which, again, was odd since it hadn’t rained in a few days). Course layout was great but rough was a foot high in spots. I guess we’re playing the US Open. My poor wife couldn’t even advance the ball.
Some major issues on 11, 12 and 17. 11 and 17 have sea walls that are literally collapsing. Looks like they’ve lost 6 feet of dirt in spots. On 12, a pipe was leaking that completely flooded the tee. My wife actually had to tee off from the fairway.
The dues they quoted us were $595 per month (plus fees and minimums), so I estimated roughly $20k per year. Just couldn’t see the value given course conditions. We ended up joining Royal Melbourne, which has been great.
TLC Needed
Got invited as a guest 3-4 or times. But, it would rain and the course would flood. Ended up playing at Arboretum on those days.
When I finally got to play, the course was over crowded and pace of play was over 5 hours. Not sure what was going on but rough was extremely high and weeds were everywhere.
Could be a great place but owners seemed to have invested all of their money in the sister course (Royal Fox).
Great Course, New Golf Management
Course Operations have been turned over to Sequoia Group out of Atlanta GA and already you can see the conditiions have approved to make this course excellent. Membership only this year with a big push for new members and the price is right. If you are looking for the CC living, this is the best deal in the NW suburbs. Pool, Tennis, Dining. If you are looking for Cheap Cheap Cheap, move on to some beat up municipal course and 4 1/2- 5 hour rounds.
Not so great, poor condition, no gps, no course maps
I paid $35 for a private course, so no complaints, it was relatively a steal. But I thought I was going to get immaculate. Could have played a local public course for same green fees and played better conditions. I heard new ownership 2-3 years ago and are working on upgrading.
No way course is worth $150
I played on a Hot Deal for $42, unfortunately it rained the entire round. I played all 18 holes and the course was in so so shape. This course definitely is too big for its britches
What a great value for $42!
Purchased a Hot Deal on GolfNow on the date of play. Played a beautiful, fun, well maintained, challenging course for the price of a muni. Would defintely come back. Thanks for a great time!
awesome golf course
Championship golf course. Long Doglegs on both nines. Bring your A game.
Very traditional but expensive!
It's a semi-private course with free range balls and pitching area. The course is well maintained but a bit expensive for a round.
