Good challenge if you have time to burn
I understand Saturday golf can creep along, but for as many rules as the course lays out, there was no marshal to keep pace of play. I left after 15 holes and 5 hours because I was going to be late to an event. Some greens were patchy too which wasn’t ideal
Disappointed by conditions
I lost balls in the fairway simply because the grass was not cut and was too long. Disappointed in the conditions for the price.
Over booked with Marshall
The course was extremely overbooked, and from what we saw there was little to no marshal presence keeping pace of play moving. At one point there was nearly a hole-and-a-half gap between groups, while other holes were backed up badly. There also didn’t seem to be a starter combining twosomes or managing the tee sheet effectively, especially with 8-minute tee times.
We saw several groups quit during the round because of the delays. We were lucky enough to finish, but the pace really took away from the experience. It’s unfortunate because this could actually be a really fun track with better course management.
Munny in Highland
Some holes were cut better than others. Longer grass on fairways make for a different type of golf experience.
Bring Back Old Wicker
I started playing this course in the 1970s. It was beautifully maintained with tree lined fairways on just about every hole. Those days are long gone. You can’t tell the difference between the fairways and the rough. And for some unexplained reason workers were driving around on riding mowers, but not cutting the rough which is full of weeds. And forget trying to play any shots out of the greenside bunkers. What a disappointment. And I won’t be back.
Lose so many balls
The grass was so long you could lose a ball on the fairway
Awful
Fairways like rough rough 7 inches thick greens bumpy. Definitely not worth the money
Never Again
I’ve never been one to “pull the race card” under any circumstances. But after my last two visits, I can confidently say this will be my final time golfing at Wicker Park.
I’m a Caucasian man who has lived in this area for 30 years and have never had a single issue golfing here, until this past week. My brother, a friend of mine who is Hispanic and a beginner golfer, and I tried to play nine holes. What followed was one of the most disappointing and frankly disturbing experiences I’ve ever had at a golf course.
The older gentlemen working in the clubhouse were completely out of line. They fabricated “rules” on the spot to prevent my friend from playing. They refused to let us use carts and claimed my friend couldn’t play unless he had his own golf bag, despite us offering to share mine, something that has never been an issue before. The moment they saw my friend arrive, the tone shifted entirely. When we tried to reason with them respectfully, they ultimately told us to take our clubs and “golf elsewhere.”
I’ve never witnessed such blatant ignorance in all my years in this community. Whoever manages this course should seriously reconsider the staff representing it. Their behavior was discriminatory, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable.
As a result, we took our business to Centennial Park, where the staff were friendly, accommodating, and had no issue whatsoever with my friend storing his clubs in my bag. I encourage anyone looking to enjoy a welcoming, fair round of golf to do the same.
As a Caucasian man, I was once on the wrong end of this policy at a different course. This is a fairly common policy that golf courses have. Not challenging your comments on the staff attitude at Wicker Park - you saw what you saw - but you always run the risk of being denied at any course regardless of race when each golfer does not have their own golf bag and own clubs.
Great Local Course
Great course for beginners and to hone your skills. Everything seemed pretty straight with not many hazards, which makes for an enjoyable game. It rained hard for roughly 15 minutes and then lightly here and there. Many people cancelled due to the rain, so essentially we had the course to ourselves, which was fantastic. Drainage appeared to be good as it was not muddy or soaked. Will look to play on the rainy days in the future.
Not sure how you could rate Wicker as "Excellent". You must be playing golf courses in worse shape which is hard to imagine.
