About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Golfer Reviews
Sunset Valley Golf Course
I had a very enjoyable round at this golf course. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming from the moment I arrived, which set the tone for a great day. The course conditions were good overall, with well-maintained fairways and greens that played true.
The layout is enjoyable and offers a nice mix of holes that keep the round interesting without being overly challenging. Pace of play was fair, allowing us to move around the course comfortably without significant delays.
Overall, it’s a well-kept course with a great atmosphere, friendly service, and an enjoyable layout. I would definitely return and recommend it to others looking for a pleasant day of golf.
Pace of play was the worse I’ve experienced
The staff here has always been rude compared to everywhere else that’s just how I feel. Course was in good condition, played here many times over the years. Pace of play was terrible I don’t know if it was overbooked or just slow players but we had to wait at least 5-10 minutes at every tee box with multiple groups behind us waiting as well. If I’m paying $100 I expect a better experience.
Five hour pace of play
No rangers in sight as my group had to grind through a five hour round because of extremely slow play in front of us. Course was not in great shape and the pin positions were not well-thought out. I don’t think I’m going to return. Not worth the money. Galloping Hill cheaper and 10x better.
Solid track minutes from 287
Solid track with tough closing holes. Many holes require 2+ extra clubs. Grab a hot dog between 5 and 6. Great staff.
Too slow-rough shape
Too slow 2.5 hrs for 9..group in front of us had 2 holes open in front of them…no ranger, walked off after 9
The course is showlng a lot of ware and its only mid June.
Great course
Challenging course. Fast greens, some waves, some sloped. My only complaint was the cost of the golf cart. $25 each is a bit steep.
The Greens are Mean!
One of the best public courses in Northern NJ for the money. Some fairways have close proximity to other fairways, and the cart paths can be a bit challenging, the course itself was in great shape when I played. And the greens were fast making them even more challenging beyond the undulation of most. If your putts aren't precise, you risk flying past - or falling off - the greens.
Good course for hot deal
Played the course when I booked a hot deal for 52.00 dollars. I decided to walk the course with a pushcart. The walk was not extraneous at all; the course is fairly walkable. The fairways and greens were in good shape. I have played here before and have paid closer to $85 for the round. I think that is a bit high considering there are better courses in the area. But for the hot deal I got, I was satisfied with the course. I will play again.
