Virginia Beach has long been a favorite summer vacation spot for families from the Carolinas to New England and from Tennessee to Michigan, not only because of its central location on the east coast, but also for its pre-Revolutionary War history and intrinsic Southern charm. Here you'll also find the Navy's Atlantic fleet in Norfolk, Chesapeake Bay, great fishing, scores of parks and bike trails, and plenty of beaches. Quite naturally, the area is also a prime destination for golf. With year-round sunshine and mild temperatures for most months, the weather is also ideal for playing golf. Here you'll find public-access golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, as well as Pete Dye, Gene Bates, George Cobb and Rees Jones, all within 45 minutes of each other.

Well regarded as one of the best resort courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe is better than ever after a 2017 restoration by Rees Jones.
Jack Nicklaus has designed more than 200 golf courses around the world and his effort at Bay Creek Resort & Club in Cape Charles, Va. is definitely among his best. It is really part design and part Mother Nature, Mike Bailey writes. The natural backdrop of Chesapeake Bay and the landscape provided Nicklaus with a great canvas. You'll experience some pretty unforgettable golf holes and scenery.
Few golf courses have undergone as many changes in as little time as Cahoon Plantation Golf Club in Chesapeake, Va. It once had an 18-hole, par-3 course and 27 regulation holes. But while the changes aren't what Cahoon had in mind when it opened in 1999, what remains is a stellar and unique 18 holes. From a flat, treeless, windswept canvas, designer Tom Clark fashioned a course with Scottish accents, setting it apart from the low-lying courses of the Hampton Roads region.
Virginia Beach's resorts, parks and Atlantic shorelines have made it a holiday hotspot for American families for decades. Now the area is also welcoming its fair share of golfers. With fair year-round weather and ample Southern charm, not to mention some must-play courses designed by names like Palmer, Dye, Couples and Nicklaus, Virginia Beach is an ideal destination for golf enthusiasts.
Golfers in the Virginia Beach area are fortunate to have a place like Hampton Roads Golf Clubs, which features seven diverse golf courses for players of all levels and tastes. Golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones and his son Rees Jones are part of the lore here. From Cypress Point C.C., the priciest of the courses, to Owl's Creek Golf Course, the least expensive and ideal for seniors, women, children and players looking for a quick round, Hampton Roads Golf Clubs has you covered.
The words "playable by all levels" or "generous fairways" usually don't come to mind when describing a Pete Dye golf course. But those are descriptions you can believe when it comes to Virginia Beach National. This former TPC course has some typical Dye features, but lacks the sharp edge found on many of his courses.

To say Lambert's Point Golf Club is in an odd location is an understatement. Not only does the course share property with Old Dominion University, it is built on a landfill which juts into the Elizabeth River. Its neighbor to the south is the largest coal exporting operation in the nation. Needless to say, Lambert's Point is a one-of-a-kind experience. Playing to 2,789-yards, the course might sound suited only for beginners or curiosity-seekers. But its practice facilities are extensive, its fairways and greens are finely conditioned, and its views are dramatic.
On the south side of I-64 in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, Cahoon Plantation Golf Club has brought upscale golf to an area that previously had none. It ranks among the top plays in the Tidewater area, and is certainly one of the most unique. With extensive mounding and intricate bunkering, faux elevation change, plateaued greens, Scottish accents, and fine bentgrass conditions rarely found this far south, Cahoon Plantation G.C. makes a rare impression in an area full of low-lying courses.
Finding a golf course in the rapidly growing Hampton Roads area with no surrounding homes isn't easy. But Stumpy Lake Golf Course in Virginia Beach fits the description, and then some. Situated on a lake in a wooded, swampy wildlife preserve, Stumpy Lake is a secluded oasis amid the bustle of Virginia Beach. Opened in 1953, this Robert Trent Jones design is the oldest of the municipal courses under the umbrella of Hampton Roads Golf.
Honey Bee Golf Club has thrived as a modestly priced, well conditioned municipal golf course in the Virginia Beach area. Rees Jones, the famed "Open Doctor" who is known for his severe treatments of U.S. Open courses such as Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black, built Honey Bee, and his influence is especially evident in the course's elaborate bunker complexes. What's more, the course is one of the Tidewater area's best bargains.
The Mike Strantz-designed Tradition Club at Royal New Kent in Providence Forge, Va. offers no easy shots. Yet there's nothing unfair about the golf course.
