Playing Independence Golf Club is like being in Texas. Everything there is big. The course, in the suburbs west of Richmond, Va., has big fairways, big greens, big bunkers, big trees and a big clubhouse. With rates that top out at $75, Independence is a bargain considering its pedigree as the lone daily-fee golf course in Virginia designed by Tom Fazio. Like many of his courses, Independence is both visually pleasing and playable with its wide fairways and five sets of tees.

In a game threatened by the increased scarcity and rising cost of water, Hunting Hawk serves as a case study of how to create an outstanding golf course using natural sources of water. Surrounded by farmland, the golf course stays true to its pristine setting.
The Club at Viniterra in New Kent, Va. was established as a private club in 2009, but it was recently opened to the public and is fast developing a reputation as one of Virginia's best golf courses. At 7,725 yards, the Rees Jones design is the longest course in the state. But don't be intimidated, Kevin Dunleavy writes.

Hunting Hawk Golf Club, located 20 miles northwest of Richmond, is all about golf. The Bill Love design traverses woodlands, wetlands and rolling land in a surprisingly secluded property (there are no homes at Hunting Hawk). Water conservation and environmental protection are paramount as Hunting Hawk -- as is good golf.
The Mike Strantz-designed Tradition Club at Royal New Kent in Providence Forge, Va. offers no easy shots. Yet there's nothing unfair about the golf course.
