The 2015 PGA Championship is upon us, and it's back at a familiar venue: Whistling Straits, which has had playoff finishes in its previous two years as host.

An abandoned airfield along the coast of Lake Michigan two hours north of Chicago is an unlikely place for one of America's top golf resorts. But that is just what Whistling Straits - together with its neighbor Blackwolf Run, a part of the Kohler Resort - has become in its brief history.
Golfers have four great reasons to visit The American Club. All four Pete Dye courses at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits are considered among the best in the country. And the quaint village of Kohler, a master-planned community, serves as the perfect Midwestern backdrop for a destination seemingly trapped in time. Here are 10 reasons to visit The American Club.
Going "rustic" seems to be a growing trend at golf resorts. Sandhill, a new luxury cabin accommodation, opened at The American Club -- the five-star resort north of Milwaukee -- this spring. Pete Dye turned down the volume on the Irish Course at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, ranked No. 35 by Golf Digest among America's top 100 public courses. It has fewer bunkers than the more heralded Straits Course at Whistling Straits and is a great alternative.
Pete Dye's courses at The American Club set the standard for daunting championship golf in the Midwest, but The Bull at Pinehurst Farms isn't far behind. Jack Nicklaus took a page out of Dye's playbook when he designed this challenging track. Still, the lost balls are worth checking off a bucket-list track.
The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls is replete with unique holes. The golf course weaves back and forth through woods, over a stream, and past a few houses, in such a way that it feels shorter than the 7,354 yards on the scorecard. For all its demanding shot-making, it rewards visitors with numerous memorable holes at reasonable rates.
The Sheboygan River twists and meanders through the River Course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wis., almost as if Pete Dye dug the riverbank and poured the water in himself. That's how intimately -- and wonderfully -- the river interacts with the course, a stunning track ranked by Golf Digest as the 15th best public course in the U.S. The natural setting looks like an oil painting come to life.
