Chicago area's Cog Hill offering attractive golf packages and Golf Channel Academy lesson programs

With four courses and several options to choose from, Cog Hill Golf & Country Club near Chicago offers golf packages to fit every budget and golf vacation. From one-day packages starting at just $77, to overnight packages that include the famous Dubsdread Course, there is something for every golfer.

Cog Hill's premium package is The Home Run Package, which starts at $355 and includes a round of each of the four courses. Here are the details:

  • One round of golf on Course No. 4, better known as the Dubsdread Course ($155 value). Dubsdread, added by the Jemsek Family in 1964, is the former home of the Western Open and the BMW Championship. Originally designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, the course was renovated by Rees Jones in 2008 and remains as difficult as it beautiful. It's ranked among America's top 100 courses by both Golf Digest and Golf magazines.
  • One round on Course No. 2 – the Ravines Course ($73 value). Opened in 1929 (yep, the same year as the crash), this championship layout, designed by David McIntosh and Bert Coghill, is routed through wooded rolling terrain with ravines on nearly half the holes. Unique to the course is the closing 19th hole, a challenging par 3 that offers a testy putting surface and perfect opportunity to settle any matches or presses. In preparation for the 1997 U.S. Amateur qualifier, three new holes -- a par 3, par 4, and par 5 -- were constructed to create the present-day "U.S. Amateur" layout. Together with Dubsdread, the two courses have been named among the best two-course combinations in the world by Links Magazine.
  • One round of golf each on No. 1 and No. 3. No. 1 is the original course at Cog Hill, first designed by McIntosh in 1927 and later redone by Dick Wilson. Challenging, but not overpowering, the course is a great warmup for the tougher tests at Cog Hill. No. 3 is a Wilson design that opened in 1963 and actually incorporated some of the original holes on No. 1 to solve a routing problem. Around 6,400 yards from the tips, it won't overwhelm you, but it is still a good test.
  • One night of hotel accommodations at the Marriott-Burr Ridge (up to $200 value) based on double occupancy. Plus, those who book the packages receive a $25 Nike gift card to be used in the golf shop, range balls, and an engraved Cog Hill bag tag.

The Champions Package (starting at $305) includes rounds on No. 4 and No. 2, plus accommodations, range balls, bag tag and Nike gift card.

The Dubs Package (starting at $250) includes all of the above, except it is just one round on Dubsdread.

The wildly popular two single-day packages, "Let's Play Two and Four" package (starting at $190) includes rounds of golf on Nos. 2 and 4, range balls, gift card, but no hotel. And the most economical package is the "Let's play One and Three," which includes rounds of golf on No. 1 and No. 3, gift card and range balls. It starts at $77 per player.

A little help with your game from the Golf Channel Academy

Of course, if you're going to play Dubsdread, you're going to want to bring your "A" game.

So a visit to the Golf Channel Academy, located at Cog Hill's famous Barn, might be in order before playing it, or you might want to wait until afterwards. In either case, Cog Hill is also home the Golf Channel Academy at the Learning Center, headed up by one of the country's top instructors, Kevin Weeks.

Weeks has taught at Cog Hill for more than 20 years and earned three Illinois PGA Instructor of the Year Awards (2005, 2007, 2009). He is currently ranked third on Golf Digest's Top Instructors in Illinois list and was a finalist for 2010 National PGA Teacher of the Year Award. Also known for his work with juniors, 60 of his students have played college golf.

In addition, Weeks invented and patented The Dynamic Impact Indicator, a putting improvement device, and has worked with more than 75 PGA Tour players since 2006.

Weeks heads up an all-star cast of instructors, which also includes Lee Miller, Louise Davis, Carol Rhoads, Trey Van Dyke and Randy Heinrich. All are PGA Professionals with extensive experience.

The Golf Channel Academy at Cog Hill is part of a collection of distinguished PGA and LPGA professionals from around the country and Canada at one of the finest teaching facilities in the world. The underlying philosophy of Golf Channel Academy -- which all of the coaches at Cog Hill reinforce -- is that good coaching takes place over a period of time, not just one lesson.

"The relationship between coach and student is more than just 'one and done,'" Weeks said. "This is how 'teaching' becomes 'coaching,' which we describe as an on-going relationship devoted to long-lasting improvement. Everything about Golf Channel Academy is devoted to enhancing the 'coaching' experience for both teacher and student."

Golf Channel Academy is the hands-on coaching extension of the cable network's instruction programming, which includes such shows as The Golf Fix, Lesson Tee Live, and School of Golf.
