Golf Channel showcases the transformation of U.S. Open host Pinehurst No. 2

Matt Ginella and the team at Golf Channel have been busy detailing the brand new Pinehurst No. 2, host of the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open. Follow the latest news from Pinehurst every day on Golf Channel's Morning Drive program.

This isn't the first time Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted the U.S. Open, but it's the first time hosting the nation's championship looking like this. Brown, fast and sandy, the course has returned to its original Donald Ross style after several decades of a green and lush playing style.

Golf Channel has been spotlighting Pinehurst No. 2 in numerous segments this week. The first was a spotlight on Bill Coore, the co-architect (with Ben Crenshaw) of the restoration. Matt Ginella visited with Coore in his home state of North Carolina just down the road from Pinehurst.

Also, other key players in the Pinehurst restoration weighed in on the transformation of the course, including Crenshaw, Donald Padgett II, Tom Pashley and Mike Davis. Watch the piece here.

While Pinehurst now has nine golf courses after the recent acquisition of National Golf Club, area historian Lee Pace talks with Ginella about how the property, originally conceived as a wellness getaway, was never supposed to have golf at all.

You can view reviews of Pinehurst No. 2 here, which so far has a perfect 5-star rating on GolfAdvisor and has reviews from Golf Channel's Will Gray and Sirius-XM Radio's Matt Adams, host of Fairways of Life.
