The New Way to Rent Golf Clubs

Many of you have been asking me about the "golf club rental services" you're seeing around the Web, so today I thought I'd share what I know about them.

If you're unfamiliar, there are now companies that will deliver a new (or newish) set of brand-name clubs to the hotel or golf course of your choice, then pick them up when you're finished playing.

Now, I greatly prefer shipping my own clubs when traveling, but if I'm only playing one round or -- gasp, only nine holes -- I've been known to rent.

Lately, I have not been renting from the courses or resorts where I'm playing -- I've been trying out the aforementioned services such as GolfClubsAway, GolfRentalWorld, and ClubHub.

So far, my experiences have been good. Logistics (dropoff and pickup) were hassle free and the prices were less than what the resort wanted to charge me for comparable clubs.

The chart below provides a basic comparison...

There are obviously many factors to consider, but from a pure price perspective, renting golf clubs from these outfits for a day (starting at $55-$65) can be less expensive than renting from higher-end golf courses and resorts ($75-$100 per day) or shipping your clubs roundtrip (starting at $80-$100).

Again, I emphasize, "for a day." If you're playing more golf than that, these rental prices start creeping up to the point where toting or shipping your own clubs is probably the better way to go.

To give you an idea of just how pricey it can be to rent clubs from a higher-end resort, here are a few examples:

Pebble Beach Resort - $95/Day
TPC Sawgrass - $85/Day
The Resort at Pelican Hill - $80/Day
Chambers Bay - $55/Day

One other alternative to renting clubs from a resort or national golf rental company is to rent from a regional one. While the regional companies only service a specific state or region within the country, if you happen to be traveling to one of them, you might just be able to take advantage of some great deals. Here are a few notable companies we've uncovered:

HRS Golf (Serves the San Diego, California area)

Myrtle Beach Golf Club Rentals (Serves the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area)

Cesar's Golf Shop and Rentals (Servers the Miami, Florida area)

Pro Sets Golf (Serves the Phoenix, Arizona area)

Have you had any good or bad experiences renting clubs while traveling? Any questions about the services above?

It seems your site does not work? Also, you are only in the Pittsburgh area, which is a horrible golf market?

I used GolfRentalWorld many times and now feel like I have been ripped off. The last 2 rentals I have made, each bag was missing the sleeve of golf balls. After I told the company this after first time they promised to add to my next rental. Guess what - no balls AT ALL included next time. Convenient? Mostly their service was good and easy to use until recently. Unless this problem is rectified by the owner (I will post back here if it is) I would not use again and advise others not to believe they will be getting any golf balls included for their game!

Just back from staying in Cancun mexico and saved a small fortune renting from one of these businesses (Cancun Golf Club Rentals). Very happy with the service. Now looking to do the same for next vacation in Jamaica if anyone has any experience there?

Cesar's Golf Rental in South Florida rocks. Owner Julio (dunno why the shop is called Cesar's? Maybe Julio Cesar?) and his staff get it: you want to play golf and they make it as easy as possible. From the crack of dawn to eight at night, they are working it. There's no upwelling or nickel and dining either: the last time I rented Julio told me that if I wanted to try to sneak in one more round on my last day before returning the clubs to go for it. He has tried every club in the shop and loves

Hi Craig, was reading your article about renting and wanted to share our information as well.

What we have tried to provide is options for golfers to find clubs they can use while on their golf vacation that will actually enhance their trip. We have options from TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping as well as customized options like 1/2" or 1" long for taller golfers as well as 1/2" short irons for the not so tall. I know one thing that annoyed me when I tried renting clubs was being stuck with a putter I didn't like so we offer our clients the opportunity to select a putter from Odyssey, TaylorMade or Ping. We drop off and pick up from your Hotel or Resort in Phoenix/Scottsdale or Las Vegas, as well we have locations in Scottsdale, Peoria and we'll meet you at the Car Rental Center at Sky Harbor or McCarran International in Las Vegas.

Cheers,

Doug
