Still a work in progress
New owners are still working on the course, back 9 still closed. This is second time in about a week I've played there, mainly because it is close by and reasonably priced. Fairways were in OK shape, greens were fast and minimal terf. Last time I played, there was a temporary green, this time around there were 2 temporary greens. I can't wait until they get everything put together. It's a fun course but not in the best shape. I'd play it just to try it as it presents some interesting challenges.
Renovation deal
It appears they are doing some major work on the course. I had to play the first 9 holes twice, which we were warned about upon arrival. It's the least expensive course in the area. You get what you get.
Enjoyed playing with my son but the greens had more sand then the beach they were terrible worst I've ever played. Aside from that course was awesome . I will play again next time I am on vacation there. I am on my 2nd stint as a golfer only now I play one handed due to lose of my left side from a stroke.
Course in bad shape
If you can avoid this course please do. The greens are bad, the sans traps have too many weeds and the course is not mowed often. They have basically lost to course to bad maintenance and management. This used to be a nice course, but now it’s just a cow pasture. I’ll take my golfing $$$$ else where as this is just not acceptable (even as a member) anymore.
Needs some work, which is in the process of being done
Played here several times and played 9 holes this round. This has to be the worst condition Ive seen it. Its under new ownership and a lot of work is being put into the course. Upon arrival, we checked in and got some range balls, we were also told cart path only, back 9 is closed and one of the holes had a temporary green. The range which is irons only, was in horrible shape. Weed growth up to a foot high both on the range and the t box area. Areas without the weeds were dug out hole or large divots. Once we got on the course we found the rough to look a lot like the range. Deep rough about 6” of grass with the 12” weeds sticking up. The fairways themselves were a bit longer than expected with no roll. A combination of grass length and wet conditions. The greens were slow a Xmas and the cups seemed smaller than other courses I played, it was weird.
Unfortunately it is bad shape. Has not been mowed and greens need lots of TLC. I have played here in the past and it was a very nice experience. I think time has not been kind
August Golf
When I made the reservation, I did not know that the back nine was closed. The staff were very friendly and nice about it. The course was challenging (I played the back tees) and the layout of the front nine was intriguing. Due to a lot of recent rain, it was cart path only. Not knowing the course but being able to play the front side twice made it a long day in the heat. There was one temporary green on the front side. Overall, I would have liked to see it in a little better shape and also see if the back nine was as challenging as the front. The staff really were great from the pro shop to the ranger. Hopefully the course is getting the TLC it needs to be spectacular.
First Time Great Experience
We were met with pleasantry at the club house. Very helpful and friendly staff. The course played moderate with good conditions. Four holes had temporary greens which was ok but would like to know yardage corrections to these greens for approach shot purposes. Will play again.
Not worth the price
The greens were in terrible condition. None were really worth putting on. 3 temporary greens. The teeboxes were in rough shape as well. Definitely was NOT worth the $60!!
Brandywine GC
The greens were in terrible condition having very little grass , and mostly sand. This could be a great course with some maintenance.
Nice layout, rough greens
The course was interesting and could be great at some point. However, many of the greens were burnt up and a couple were basically just sand. Looks like it might have been aerated a few weeks, ago. The pro did warn me about the greens when I checked in and he was super nice, as were the workers in the restaurant. It was my first time playing it, so I don't have a comparison to the past. Fix the greens and I'd play again for sure.
Not worth the price
The course had some unique hole designs. It was actually a nice designed course, but almost all the greens on every hole were burnt up. There were a few holes where the greens had no grass at all and was just burnt up grass and dirt. A shame because the course did have a nice lay out. So, overall, if I’m going to spend $60 on a round a golf, it’d be nice to have greens that are at least some what playable.
7/18 greens felt like I was putting in Iraq.
Terrible.
Extremely Disappointed
The last time I played this course was probably 15 years ago. To say that this course has gone down hill is an understatement. Greens were completely burnt up, course fairways and beyond are not being maintained and over grown in many areas. Clippings from previous cuttings were still sitting on top of areas that had been cut at some point long ago. The owner obviously has quit investing capital into this course and that is very sad. If maintained, this course could be a very nice course.
Nostalgia
I learned to play golf here in the 90’s. It was great to come back. Clubhouse very nice. The ladies who checked me in were so warm and welcoming. 1st 9 holes were great. Fun layout. Course in very good shape. Back 9 the course is struggling. Tee boxes missing grass. Greens very patchy. Fairways need some work. But overall nice course and I plan to play again soon.
Base your decision to play on your golf game.
I don't understand all the negative reviews of Brandywine Bay Country Club (BBCC). I played this past weekend and here's my honest assessment of the various aspects of the course:
1. Driving range: While there is one, it's small and limited to irons. Actually, I believe the sign requests that you not hit further than 175 yards. As a result of the distance limitation, I don't warm-up on the driving range and opt to go straight from the parking lot to the tee box.
2. Condition: This appears to be where BBCC is heavily-criticized. While there are some bare spots on the greens and in the fairways, the superintendent (with whom I was paired) apprised me of all the things being done to address the issues. Clearly, management recognizes this as a problem and is working toward resolution.
3. Layout: The course is challenging! If there's a weakness in your game, BBCC will expose it. For some of the par 4s and 5s, driver is not the best option off the tee. Club selection and accuracy will save your scorecard.
4. Patrons: I played BBCC approximately 20 times in the past six months and, typically, I play solo. On these occasions, I always find myself "catching" the group in front of me. I can't think of a time when I was not allowed to play through...or at least had the offer extended to me. This past weekend, I was solo and the group ahead of me had a person unexpectedly drop from their foursome. They invited me to play with them and I had a great time!
5. Price: If you're staying "at" the Crystal Coast, BBCC is the most cost-effective course in the area. Sure...there are other equitably (or lower) priced courses in New Bern or further; however, you have to drive 45+ minutes to get to them. I value my time at the beach and don't want to waste 1.5 to 2+ hours of it in the car.
Hopefully, you find this review helpful. At the end of the day, it's your money and you can spend it wherever you want. These are the reasons I spend mine at BBCC.
Course review
For the money they charge to play this course I was expecting something pretty decent. The fairways look like a war zone. The greens were surprisingly okay but nothing more than that. Overall it just looks like nobody takes care of the course and I will not come back. At most I’d spend $30 to play this course.
