Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

The course ia very nice but the pace of play was not good.
The course estimates 4 hour play, it took us 5hours and 37 minutes. We became best freinds with the group ahead and behind us waitng for the gorups ahead. We never once saw a Ranger. This could have easily been fixed. I will return though.
Beautiful Course
This course is absolutely beautiful, with a great mix of challenging holes that keep the round interesting. The practice range was also in excellent condition and a great way to warm up before our tee time at 5:30.
We started behind just one couple, which was perfect for maintaining a smooth pace. Unfortunately, ahead of them was a group of five men with three carts, which really slowed things down noticeably. It was surprising this was allowed, as it affected the flow of play.
Eventually, we decided to quietly play through without formally asking — they didn’t seem to mind, as they were taking their time searching for balls and enjoying a very relaxed round. That was our only real concern on an otherwise wonderful experience.
High Handicapper Beware
NJ golfers should be challenged by this course at least once.
One of the most beautiful, unique course layouts to kick the crap out of the average-high handicap golfer. This course is the most difficult public course in NJ. Tight lines on tee shots and obstacles 220-260 yards out makes driver on most holes the wrong play, even the par 5s. Shots missed in the thick rough lead you scrambling for bogey or worse. Even a perfect drive can result in a sloping lie on a fairway mound. Course conditions were average for public golf: Sand traps were more like dirt, fairways approaching greens were torn up, and greens are slow. Difficulty and conditions should be overlooked as Crystal Springs has some of the most beautiful scenery and interesting layout in public (and private) golf.
GOOD
Challengable course layout
condition of the green is oaky, but tee box is not even, bunker seems to be not managed for a long time.
Challenging Course
3rd time playing here. Challenging course with narrow fairways. Be prepared to bring more balls as wayward shots will be gone into the woods or water.
Overall fairways were well maintained and greens were consistent throughout.
However the pace of play was a little slow perhaps due to lost balls etc.
The Bird House (halfway place) is nice to catch a beer and snacks(between hole 8 & 9).
Highly recommended with friendly staff.
Overbooked
Way too crowded and course rangers did not help in trying to speed up pace of play.
Only good for the challenge
Worth it if all you want to do is challenge yourself. Conditions were just ok. Has maybe 4 Has maybe 4 picturesque holes.
Crystal springs enjoyer
First time here. Early in the season so I won’t complain about aerated greens. They gotta do it at some point. Course was fun, challenging, nicely laid out. Starter on that specific Day was very friendly and fun. We teed of at 1:00 on Saturday 4/19 so whoever was working there was good. Would like to play again. Place was great. I’d like to say anyone complaining probably plays in cargo and is untucked.
Aerated greens
There was never a mention beforehand about the just aerated greens. Not by GN nor by anyone at the course!!!
