Union League National Golf Club - Sherman/Grant

About
Union League National Golf Club on the Jersey Shore is a course that earns its former name (Sand Barrens), thanks to the varied sand traps and waste bunkers. Designed by Dana Fry and Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the South/West Course measures 6,895 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136. The front nine is a little open and has more undulating greens than the back. Look for No. 4, which plays 439 yards and is one of the course favorites. It gets no easier on the back nine, which finishes with two challenging par 4s.
Formerly known as South/West at Sand Barrens Golf Club and Union League National Golf Club - South/West.

one of the easy par 3's for the day. 210 yard to the pin and 180 to carry the water. Photo submitted by golfnut593 on 03/12/2013
Great course, lots of sand. Want to play again when greens aren't recently aerated
Great layout. Would have given higher scores but they had some issues with the greens and they were recently aerated so I would have rated higher ordinarily. The sand traps (of which there were many) were very well groomed. Great golf experience.
Interesting challenge with the mutiple fairway sand trap...
Actually, the sand trap might help to keep those out of bound shot to actually stay in play. Just don't stress when playing in those...
Lots of sand. Thus the name. Drives need to be straight
My third time to play it and I enjoyed it more. A bit disappointed that the Pro Shop closed at 6:00 . I would have done some shopping
Needs help
I played over a holiday weekend and expected the pace to be slow. But the course was pretty beat up. Many of the greens had patches of turf damaged or gone, none of the previous groups seemed to be able to repair ball marks or fill in divots or rake bunkers. If the course was better maintained, it could be five stars.
Wait for every shot
They overbooked. We spent waiting 10 minutes for every shot. The first nine holes was over 3 hours and 20 minutes. ( south course)
The second nine ( north) was much more enjoyable.
Overall, we will never return!
Awful Greens!
Greens were a disgrace. I played Beckett last week and greens were better there and Beckett is a goat ranch. Some fairways were totally burned out.
course is in Horrible Condition
Played today at the North and South. The person taking your money will not tell you that the greens are horrible. There is no grass on any of the tee boxes.. The workers on the course are yelling and talking a loudly throughout our round. Do not waste your money... The course is in terrible shape... Give your money to another course in the area,,,
Scott
great layout, greens need a lot of care!
I really loved the layout, but was disappointed with the greens. They were slow and some of the greens had no grass on them. I feel that this is unacceptable especially the price they charge.
Good layout; TERRIBLE condition
The layout of this course is nice, and it is a decently challenging track. However, it is in TERRIBLE shape. Burned out fairways and greens are spray painted green. I wouldn't pay much to play here given current conditions.
Good value with the golfnow price
Great layout, very different from the traditional courses in the area. The greens and fairways were in somewhat poor condition. I only paid 35 bucks for 18 but would of been unsatisfied if I had to pay the regular rate of 75 for twilight. Overall cool and different course but for these prices you would expect better conditions.
It has a good layout, but condition is not up to par.
I played here last winter, and got a great winter rate even thought it is a hike for me from downtown Philly. I was already in Sea Isle this weekend and got a hot deal. The course is not in the best of shape, and one 18 of the 27 holes were open. Not sure if the yardages off the tee are off, but the drove through quite a few fairways...could be the new R1 driver also! Had an OK round, but the over all condition, from tee to green, could use some improvement.
Interesting holes
I really liked the interesting layout of each hole. Large bunkers make this a challenging course. I wish the fairways and greens were more well maintained but can overlook the condition since it wa a fun course to play.
The course is in rough shape due to the weather in early July. Dry and fungus on the fairways and greens.
Due to the course condition, I would not recommend this course at this time. Maybe at reduce rates.
Stay away
Course was in very poor condition . The greens were burned out and diseased. Fairways not well kept. there are many other courses that are in great shape in the area for the same price.
Not worth the $$$
The course was not well maintained and in poor condition. There was a reason there were so many tee times available at peak times!!! According to the members it has fallen under disrepair and membership is way down. The staff was nice but it would have been nice if they were upfront about 9 of the 27 being closed down (for the last 6 months!), were up front about the range being closed for maintenance the day I showed up 45 minutes early to practice, and also informed that they would be top-dressing and spraying bright blue watering agent on the greens. Paying $89 to play the course was not fair and their website is an inaccurate representation of the course.
No water on this course
Very interesting design. Parts of the fairways on the on the North and South course need attention. Greens were in very good shape. I would play this course again.
poor condition, staff was actually friendly this time around, thankd to golfnow i didnt overpay.
I love the layout and challenge of course, however the cores was in horrendous condition. Could be due to heat we had in prior weeks but Avalon golf club didn' I were to have paid the regular price $105 I would have been disappointed. Most greens, if not all, had huge Brown spots ( ground under repair).
In past experiences, the staff was usually rude and ignorant. This time around they were friendly and cordial.
Although, it can't be helped, due to layout and difficulty of course, it was a 5 hour round. People in front of us taking too long looking for lost balls, then marking and lining up 1 foot putts. We're not pros.
No marshals enforcing quicker play.
Most likely not play again this year.
Course has a lot of turf issues
Normally a nice course to play. whether it was the July heat or other issues, the turf really took a hit.
Nice Course Usually I Bet
Played for first time in mid-July. Very nice and challenging course. Using Golf Now does get you a real break on cost versus calling. Very nice staff. The only negative is that the heat seems to have been a bit rougher on this course versus others in the area we played (particularly around the greens). Certainly a fixable issue.
not in good shape. good layout. very disappointed.
would never pay going rates. Paid $ 35.00 golf now special. played many times . This is not a quality course.could be .owners taking advantage of summer location. donot waste your $
