Great course for mid-high handicappers
Played here for the first time 5/23/23 with my wife. We are mid/high handicappers, and really enjoyed it! Straightforward holes, very playable and forgiving. Conditions were superb! Lush fairways, nice greens, fresh sand in the bunkers, tee boxes were just fine. Staff was friendly, and the carts have GPS (seemed like new carts?) Course might not be challenging for low handicaps, but it was perfect for us and I'm sure we'll be playing here more often. Very reasonable greens fees after 3:00 PM ($39 with cart). Nobody was ahead of us, so we played 18 in 3-1/2 hours, really nice! Highly recommended especially for high & mid handicappers like us.
Windy day
Course was in shape, greens did get air rated, carts had GPS, which new.
Excellent
The course was in great shape and many improvements are under way! New gps in the cart since I last played there! Welcome addition . Will definitely return.
Starters at cart shed
I have played Avalon course quite a few times over the last several years and enjoy it… For some reason before we even teed off there was change over and confusion with staff members out at the golf cart area..tee times and pairings were all over the place..right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing kind of thing…It’ finally settled down and we did tee off and course was enjoyable as usual with a good pace
Upgraded and playing great
A beautiful late September round. We teed off after a shotgun event, which caused some major 20-30 minute backups at a few holes, but our pace caught up to acceptable levels on the back 9. Rangers were kind enough to compensate us for the waits with a food and bev coupon. Management has sunk a good deal of money into upgrades and hole changes throughout the course, including a new bulkhead and clearing on hole 11, an alternate green on hole 13, freshly-paved cart paths, and beautiful grooming (with new sand) in virtually all bunkers. These upgrades have really improved the look and play of the course and have me excited to come back to Avalon. Fairway and green conditions were excellent, and the tee boxes, while a bit beaten up, were far, far better than visits in 2020 and 2019. With fewer public options than ever in the area, Avalon GC continues to improve and position itself as one of the top options in Cape May county.
A disgrace of a golf course
The course was a quagmire. There were no rangers managing pace of play. The tees should have been placed commensurate with the course conditions. If the course is soaked and the ball plugs into the fairways or rough, shorten the tees because the average golfer cannot deal with these conditions. The management should be ashamed of themselves. What are they doing? You have to make the player’s experience as best as possible despite wet conditions. Other courses can do that. Why can’t Avalon?
Awful conditions
$94 to play a round at the shore, reasonable. $94 to play a round where tee boxes hadnt seen a mower in a week unacceptable. The fairways were hairy and the greens not better but the conditions of the tee boxes were appalling. The rough wasnt as thick and deep as the tee boxes.
Speaking of mowers, they were out but the operators lacked even the slightest amount of sense. No desire to get off to side when groups were hitting shots, had one stop in front of the green on a par 3. Just awful etiquette by them.
Only positive were the guys in the cart barn. Very friendly bunch.
Fun course
I liked the layout. Nothing hidden, just right in front of you. Had rain previous night and greens were not cut and pretty slow. Condition of greens was good and fairways were really nice. My only serious complaint would be the tee boxes. Lumpy and grassy. They seemed to get better as round wore on. I’d definitely play it again for the right price.
