Union League National Golf Club - Meade/Grant
About
West/North at Union League National Golf Club measures 7,092 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 137. Located on the Jersey Shore, Union League National G.C. earns its name with sand everywhere, in traps and bunkers. West/North gets the sand rolling on No. 4. Big hitters can make it to the green, but the rest have to navigate past an ocean of sand. The West/North ends with nine holes considered the toughest at Union League National. Two holes stand out: No. 16, a long par 4, and No. 18, a par 3 that requires a carry over a pond to a peninsula green.

Avoid this course
One of the most disappointing days I've ever had on a golf course. Paid $79 to putt on dirt. Just look at the "green" in the photo. Several of the greens were more dirt than grass, and the greens that had grass were slow and bumpy. It was like playing Plinko. Fairways were burned out, too. It is unbelievable that they would charge $79 for such terrible conditions. Maybe it will improve later, but don't play here until someone tells you it's much better. There are plenty of other better choices at the Jersey Shore that will give you your money's worth.
Beaten Up Course
I received a discount from booking online, however they were giving a discount because the greens weren't cut the day I played. Well that was the least of the worries, for the money paid for that course the conditions were horrible and I'll probably never play there again. The greens were all over the place and in bad condition in most spots. For the greens fees you pay there the course needs to be taken care of a lot better. I played Shoregate the following day and although its 25 bucks more, its WELL worth that 25. The green were cut an rolled and the course conditions were great. Sandbarrens really needs to step it up
needs some work on greens and some fairways. Not nearly as good as last year.
lots of fungus and grub destruction probably due to the lack of protective fungicides. the greens were so uneven and lumpy that our putts were a real challenge. Also, they removed the GPS units last year and it makes no sense!
Hurt by heat wave
Unfortunately, the weather got the best of Barrens. Played there 3 weeks ago and would have rated it 4 stars. They have some great holes with the best of them being the North course
2013 letdown
I play this course every year, and 2013 was a letdown. Usually the course is in great shape, not this year. The course was in poor condition, rough, fairways, greens and tee boxes were all beat up. I was first one out in the am. They were running sprinklers on greens while we were playing them. Overall a bad value this year.
Hopefully 2014 will be better.
Not Worth $105
The course was not in the best of shape. Staff said it was due to the recent heavy rain & maybe so but the tee boxes were downright awful. Fairways were in decent shape but bunkers needed a lot of attention. Greens were very slow.
Funny thing about the bar--you can't get a beer unless you make your tee time at least 4 weeks in advance as the bar has a private club liquor license.
1 man ruined my day.
I played Sand Barrens on July 4th, the greens fee with cart was $105. The greeter in the pro shop was friendly and promptly assisted me. The started was great, gave us a good idea of what to expect from the course.
Where the experience started going downhill was on the fourth hole. I make a mistake; I drove past the cart do not pass sign, I realized just a second too late and was 5 feet past the sign. I quickly stopped and went 90 degrees across to the cart path.
This is when the grounds keeper began to yell at me “Don’t you see the sign? You gotta be kidding me!” I quickly apologized and he continued to berate me. I kept my cool and tried to continue the hole. At my next shot he stood in front of me with his arms crossed while I chunked my shot. This man clearly wanted to embarrass me in front of my friends.
At the end of the day the course was not in good shape, it was not worth the $105 dollars. I cancelled all of my future tee times here. I am a paying customer and even though I made a mistake which I am sorry for, I do not deserve to be addressed as I was.
Beautiful course!!!
Pace of play is great! The course is in great condition. In order to score well, you have to hit the fairways because the rough, pretty thick. Greens speed is moderate.
Nice Variety
Lots of interesting holes - well guarded greens, good varied terrain for a shore course
Good course for the money
Course layout is very good. Some difficult landing areas. Receptive greens. Good value for shore course.
A lot of Sand.....
Well managed, pace of play outstanding and course in good condition..if you want challenge, especially dodging the sand..placement here is key.
Nice Course, really great price.
Course was in good shape. Golfnow price was amazing.
Great course, great staff
Loved the course. You need to keep your ball in the fairways, which are guarded jealously by more sand than at the beach (lol). Each hole has a name and a history, and they challenge you with each shot.
I'll go back over and over.
Tee box/ fairway is not very well maintained
Even $30 is too much for 9 hole based on poor condition like this
Played after the big rain, course was soggy, not fair to evaluate
Played after the big rain, course soggy, some standing water. Not a true example of the course. Nice layout. Found a gps on course, returned to pro shop-not even a thank you
Fun To Play
The course is fun to play and the multiple tee boxes accomidating all skill levels. The course condition is improving but there is still work to be done. Especially the tee boxes and around the greens where I found the conditions were inconsistent and I experienced severe conditions in the rough just off the greens. Overall each nine is different and the layout is fun to play and hope that conditions continue to improve.
fun course
fun course not terribly challanging but maintained nicely slow play because 4some in front of us was slow
Shades of Former Glory
I was really excited to play the Sand Barrens, when I originally booked the tee time. The accolades that the course had received raised my expectations. Unfortunately, the course was not very well maintained. The bunkers, of which there are many, were filled with rocks. Also, the fairway and rough were in slight disrepair. The course did provide a challenge, and you could see how the course was so well praised in the past.
Challenging course - good condition
Weather was not great so cart path only at the time. Other than that great course, well maintained. Enjoyable round.
Plenty of space to not feel over crowded by players on other holes.
Don't listen to the hype. Anyone that can hit a golf ball can clear the sand traps. They mostly run along the sides near trees. Unlike some courses that interrupt play with hazards and bunkers and overuse of traps in front of greens, Barrens allows your ball to travel and shape your shots. Worth the money, bring some cash and definitely going back.
