The Players Club at Foxfire Golf Club
About
Foxfire Golf Club boasts 36 holes of championship golf, the Foxfire Course and the Players Club Course. The Players Club was added in 1993.The layout is a deft combination of traditional American golf and traditional British links design that provides the perfect complement to the original. The golf course is the more challenging of the two, but not by much. The layout features narrow fairways lined with trees and water hazards on eight holes. There are three particularly tricky carries over water. Strategically placed bunkers and contoured mounding also treacherously lurk by the greensides. The par-4 16th hole is the course's signature. This demanding hole plays uphill through trees to a green that is guarded by five bunkers. The most memorable hole though, might be the par-5 eighth, which features the longest sand bunker in the Midwest.

Course definitely has issues, but it's a great layout
First time playing here. As other's have said, there's a lot of improvements to be made to this course. Bunkers - they're currently working on it. Sand was being added to most bunkers. Once that's done, they'll be good.
Greens and fairways - overall, significant work is needed. Lots of dead spots, crabgrass everywhere, disease present on some greens.
Bottom line is they need the money to get the course up to what it could be. It will take some time to kill all the weeds and replant or resod to have golf course quality turf.
HOWEVER, I loved the layout of this course. Some holes are prairie style with tall grass, then others are tight with woods on each side . A few short par 4s with risk reward and water in play. A real mixed bag that keeps it interesting. The course is definitely worth checking out, if you go into it not expecting prime conditions. For $45 with cart, it's worth it.
To note: you can't just play 9 as the 9th hole doesn't finish back at the clubhouse. There is a nice halfway house between 9 and 10 to get snacks and use restroom.
It's a pretty difficult course, especially the second 9, so I wouldn't recommend it as a beginners course.
Needs money dumped into it
The sister course is now gone, and bulldozers are on site. The players club course needs that money made off the sister course put into it and hopefully soon. My complaint is that I was golfing solo and came upon a group of 3 who let me go ahead of them after a par three which was super nice of them than I came upon a group of 4 who just let a group of 2 go ahead of them I was thinking they would do the same for me on the next hole since it was a par 3 however this group never let me pass them and slowed down my pace of play to a grinding stop I played the whole back 9 behind a group of 4 that wouldn't let a solo golfer go past them unbelievable
Improvement
Remember this course being a hidden gem, but when conditions went bad it was quite saddening. Now that the sister course, Foxfire, has been sold off the conditions are improving. New sand is present, greens are green and fungus free, fairways are pure. A great layout and challenging track. Might be a little pricey but still a great experience.
Greens in terrible condition
I understand some of the fairways having some dead turf and bunkers being renovated/not raked because of covid, but the condition of the greens was horrendous. The cups hadn’t been changed in at least a week if not more and the area around the hole was so beat up you could only hit it right at the hole and hope it plinko’d in. Slow is an understatement. You cant forget about the crabgrass all over the course and there was even weeds on most greens. Such a rip-off paying $45 to play here.
Not what it used to be
Hadn't played Players in a few years and I was a bit disappointed. It used to be in great shape and well kept, but I couldn't tell the difference between it and a muni course today. The greens were in horrid shape and the fairway was really long. I definitely wouldn't recommend playing here at full price. If you're playing Players for over $35, you're paying too much. It's not much better than Foxfire at this point.
First time playing his course
the course was challenging luckily my son was teaching me where to play the ball and the course management. Pace of play has got to improve. we were flying along until we meet up with a threesome who did not let us play through I don't care if you are good or not. we were hitting into them for the last six holes and they still would not let us pass through.
Very rude staff
We arrived to the clubhouse at 10:22 for what we thought was a 10:38 tee time according to golf now. The staff was extremely rude immediately and told us we were late and were going to have to wait an hour to tee off. We showed our tee time showing 10:38 on golf now and they explained that this happens sometimes on golf now and we were out of luck and it out of their control. They said they could’ve called to tell us our tee time was different but they didn’t... the starter was equally rude and said we could take it up with the owner who was golfing ahead of us but the starter told us we were late and he couldn’t help us at all. Maybe they could’ve started us on 10 or done something but instead we were met with rudeness and a lack of caring. Pretty disappointing. Says a lot that nobody even thought to ask the owner about letting us go since the tee time they had for us was 10:21 which made us officially 1 minute late according to the time that we were moved to by the golf course. The owner must be about as friendly as the staff. The only person to actually apologize for the mixup was a woman in the owners wife’s group behind us.
Challenging greens
This is a good course. They need to have restrooms between the clubhouse and the turn. On hot days and you hydrate waiting nine holes is not always possible. To not have them, encourages people to "go old school " - gross.
$$$
First off let me say it's great to see they are putting in work on their bunkers adding new sand still a work in progress though. I golfed here last year and was sad to see how badly run down the course was and is. Some of the fairways need work along with a few greens tee boxes are in good shape. From what I can tell someone new must be in charge hopefully they are spending the money to bring back this once excellent course the players club however $42 is a lot for the condition of the course. Please get new hole plaques with yardage and maybe the layout of the hole that would be great because it's not 2015 old and faded hole plaques are not good
Conditions were MUCH better than last season besides the bunkers on a number on holes, definitely worth playing this season
Good course, horrible technology.
2 times now they have botched tee times that were booked on golf now, throwing a serious wrench in the ole weekend plans. Incredibly frustrating to book a solid prime time tee time a week in advance, only to have it cancelled with less than a days notice. FIGURE IT OUT FOXFIRE ITS 2020
Fun round of golf
Good value, weather was great and the course was great. Pace of play was fast even though the course was full.
Great day of golf
quick pace as everyone has their own cart. Course in very good condition, greens were fast. Only issue was sand traps, luckily I didn't hit in one, but they haven't added sand yet. Overall great course design, challenging holes and greens made it a fun round
Absolutely terrible one of the worst courses I've ever played condition wise
Awesome layout, in much better shape than past
Incredibly fun course to play. Layout is amazing. With fewer people playing because of COVID and the rain we’ve gotten, the course was very green, with few signs of the fungus that had been there in the past. The bunkers were still trash, but we saw some crews working on them while we were playing, so hopefully they’ll be in good shape soon.
Foxfire wet
The golf course was very wet path only but the greens were ok some better than others traps still unplayable fairways were ate the heck up on some holes probably turf disease great layout with a bunch of great holes though try it and see for yourself
Great course
The Players Club is one of my favorite courses in the area. Challenging and well kept. Plus, everyone in the clubhouse are always super nice and accommodating. Can’t wait to play the course again.
Once good but not anymore
Few years ago played here (player club). Impressive with the course layout, very fun and challenge. But today the poor course condition made me change mind. Very bad fairway with so much dry and spare patchesZ. The greens are little better but still quite fews with spare sports even looked like with fungus. The problem is the greens are not consistent. Some fast some slow. But the location of the pins are still fun. Service and hospitality is still good. Only complaint is on the halfway service ( close to 8th green) was closed today. Since the 9th hole and 10th hole are not at the club house, we could not get drinks or foods. Overall not recommending to play there now but maybe check out next year if the weather is more friendly to golf course.
Layout makes for a challenging, fun time.
I've been playing at Players Club and Foxfire for several years now, and it had really been hit hard by lack of rain. They told me a month ago that the water had been out so the fairways were not at their best. I played it just this weekend, and the fairways in just 2 weeks, have really come back! The layout on the back 9 of Players Club is one of the most challenging courses I play, and truly was beautiful when you are in the upper 60s with sun. The greens have been really great all year, and the same can be said for this past weekend. I am still waiting on the bunkers to be upgraded, but it seems they are really bringing back the fairways for Fall.
Overall: great time, tough to play, and hope to play again in a week or so.
