Mastodon Golf Club
About
Situated midway between Hebron and Newark, Mastodon Golf Club (formerly known as Burning Tree Golf Course) is an 18-hole layout whose location has unique historical significance. In 1989 while digging a new pond for the course, a crewmember discovered fossils of the extinct American Mastodon. Although the original skeleton resides in Japan, the course is home to a full-sized replica as well as over 150 other replicas of both dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals. The museum-quality replicas make the golf course a fun place for families. In addition to the natural history lesson it offers, the course also provides a relaxing round that players of any skill level will enjoy. The regulation-length course has a classic layout that is both accessible and a fair challenge. The affordable rates make Burning Tree even more appealing.

course is usually better than now.
i have played this course hundreds of times and the owners are friends of mine. however we had a tough summer last year and they lost some greens and they have not recovered yet. i'm sure they will get them fixed this year. the staff is the best and the course is very fun to play.
Great value
When I first played here using a severe discounted price I was prepared for poor conditions. I was very pleasantly surprised, and have since returned for another round.
While the course shows effects of harsh, hot summer, in general it is very playable and challenging. I noticed previous comments about gimmicky or tight holes, difficulty following signage etc. but it only took one round to figure those out.
Interestingly, I found the greens very moist also...allowing shots at the green, where most public courses would be rock hard and bounce off.
All in all I got way more than I paid for...and will be going back again!
Really has changed
I hadn't played here in several years. I always thought of this as a hackers course and was taking a couple of hackers out. This course has really grown in and is not what I remember. Very good value for your $
Burning Tree
Good value for the money.. greens wet, but other than that decent course for the money .staff was friendly and got us out early
This course is no good...
This is a gimmicky course that is a homer hacks dream. Bring your friends out, and beat them because you know all the little course oddities. The yardages were off. The greens are tiny. There is no fairway grass. The greens actually were ok, just sopping wet, from overwatering. I won't ever spend the time or money to play this course again. Keep it for the local hacks...
needs rain
greens are always slow but in great condition, the rest of the course... fairways are spotty with nice grass and dead grass. Overall layout is good, just needs work on the fairways
Burning Frustration
Front nine played fair. Wide fairways and mostly flat terrain. Back nine was disappointing. Narrow fairways with giant pine trees and hills causing blind shots. Easy to lose balls on the back nine. Also, could not locate the 16th tee box. Had to ask another golfer. Cart paths crisscross making it hard to find your way around the course. This needs improved with simple signage.
Nice course
We always enjoy playing Burning Tree. Will be back!
Interesting history on the course
The greens are really good shape small challenging
Fun course to play
There are several shots from the tees where you can not see the green. A lot of 90 degree doglegs so you have to have placement of your shots. Most par fives are tough to reach in two.
Fun course
This was an interesting, fun layout. But the fairways were not in good shape, lots of weeds. Other than that, I enjoyed my round.
First Timer to course
Course for a 1st time person is a little confusing. We drove the wrong direction several times. Need a few bigger signs. Seemed to also have a lot of people on the front of the course. We were about 2 groups deep on hole 2-5. There were quite a few 2somes and 1somes. We paired our selves up with another 2some to make it go quicker. Back nine was faster. Course was in Decent shape. The tee boxes were hard as a rock but the greens were soft. The greens on the back nine were soaked and we played after 12pm. Also many of the cups had lots of water in them. Also there had not been rain in the past week. So this was prob because of the sprinklers. Also our cart died at end of hole 17. We walked back to the club house. I was shooting a great back nine. But ended up not walking to 18. Not a big deal. Overall was a good experience for the golfnow price at 12:00pm.
Great Casual Golf Course
This course is great for walking or a casual round. There are usually many high handicap golfers on course which tends to slow down play. The condition is pretty good but most of greens are small. Never my first choice of course to play but never my last choice either.
Burning tree
Make course nicer. More people will come. Food was good and pace of play was awesome
Value for Money
My reservation was for $22 p/p plus your $2.49 p/p handling fee. The course normally charges $18 on Fridays. I would have saved $26 for the four of us if I had simply called the course and reserved my own tee time. You will be the last service I use in the future before reserving a tee time.
Hidden gem
Great place to play, has its challenges but overall great course!
Basic but Challenging
The course is pretty basic, but there are some very challenging holes on it The front 9 is fairly flat and wide open with the exception of a couple holes. The back is very narrow and is slightly hilly and lots of trees on it. The course would be good for people who don't hit the ball very far, but straight The back also has a couple very confusing tee boxes, some more signage on the back would be very helpful. There were rangers out patrolling out on the course which is very helpful. The club house had lots of clubs and other items to buy as well as virtual golf. The greens were very spongie and fairly slow, but a couple very uneven greens that made the course tougher. I did like course and I would definitely play it a again
new experience
Had a fun day..but the yardage did not seem right on some of the course, all & all had a good time.
Work on your game and you will not lose balls. This course offers a good challenge.
