Fun Challenge
Absolutely a course to play, a fun challenge, Need to play this more than once to learn what to do. Greens were slow but rest of course was in good shape == staff was very nice.
A great course with excellent staff but the greens need work!
In the beginning of the summer, I would have given this course 4 stars. I have been playing it for about 2 years. The staff and facilities are great. There are some huge elevation changes on holes 1, 9, 10 and 18 as the clubhouse is on a huge hill overlooking the course below. Challenging and fun usually. This time around while the course was pretty empty and pace of play was great, the greens were almost all punched and bumpy making it impossible to post a good score. They did give out a ticket for a free beer/soda and a hot dog which was nice but if i had paid full price for this course ($120 in prime), I would have been livid. Look for a discounted tee time of $80 or less when the greens return to form and this place will be your favorite like it has been mine.
Scenic and challenging but too many unrepaired divots and ballmarks.
One of the most scenic courses around with interesting and challenging holes that reward good shot making. Played this course in June and it was in perfect condition. However, just a few months later in August I found the course in bad shape--not so much neglected by management, but by golfers failing to replace their divots and failing to fix their ballmarks on the greens. I doubt this was caused by the clubs members. So I would say that the management needs to make a greater effort to remind golfers and/or police this situation. No rangers were in evidence during either of the two rounds I played there this summer.
maintenance
Don't play here for a while.
One of par3 is closed and whole course is on going process of maintenance. The worst part was the green they made a huge holes on the green for air which is never noticed on website. No sign. Utill we arrived the 1st green, never know about it.
paid 60 dollars per play not worth it. Not even 20 dollars.
Wonderful course abused by thoughtless golfers
I discovered NYCC in June and it is one of the most scenic and interesting courses around. Also it is a moderately challenging course that rewards good shot-making. In June the course was in pristine condition. However, this time around (two months later) I was appalled at the number of divots that had not been replaced on the fairways and number of ball marks not repaired on the greens. I doubt this damage was done by the club's members. It's a shame that such a beautiful course is allowed to be beaten up by visiting yahoos.
bad greens
This course has some beauty, for sure. It is difficult because you are rarely on a flat lie and the greens were in terrible shape. They were at least three different speeds and many were diseased. I hope they figure out the problem because bad greens equals little enjoyment for me. #9 is a crazy hole too! The staff was friendly though and the food was good.
Good but expensive
New York Golf Club has excellent facilities and a somewhat challenging course. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. If only the week end rates where cheaper. Paying $120 for an 8am tee time means that this is a course I can only afford to play occasionally.
Amazing bartender & amazingly bad greens
The greens are hurt!!!
Other than that it's good lol but the greens are awful, 13 of 18. Big big issues. Bartenders are always phenomenal on all levels.
Never Again
I normally don't write reviews for anything, but I felt the need to do so this time. My round at NYCC was the WORST golf experience for me in the past 10 years. My playing partner and I walked off after 12 holes, even though we had (over)paid a decent amount to play. The front 9 took over 2 hours and 40 minutes, and there wasn't a ranger in site all day to speed up the pace of play. The starters let 2-somes out in between 4-somes as well. The only reason to play this course is to see Hole #9, which has to be one of the top-5 most comical holes in all of golf. Seriously, if you've never played that hole, you need to see it. It's a joke of biblical proportions. Needless to say, I won't be returning to NYCC.
Do not play here right now
The course is in terrible shape. Tee boxes are beat up, greens are bumpy and discolored with several dead areas. The ranger kindly told us that and that to compensate players they are providing a free beer and hot dog after the round; however, they still made us pay the $120 greens fee because we teed off before 10am. The policy does not make sense because the course conditions were independent of when we teed off. The staff said there was "nothing he could do" even though we said we'd never play there again.
I would recommend calling the course in advance to determine the conditions before overpaying for your round. It is unfortunate because it is a fun track if the course was well maintained.
Working there way back to the top
I've been playing this course since last year, in the beginning of the season the greens defiantly took a hit from what i saw, so i took some time off from the course. I came back recently and finally the greens are coming back to life. I played last Saturday and my pace of play like always was great for a 4 some, 4 hrs and 15 mins. On top of it there staff is always the most welcoming and outgoing compared to other courses I've played, and i'd like to mention that the bartenders and beverage cart girls are all models! I would defiantly recommend to anyone who enjoys the game of golf to go there for a good experience.
challenging
well designed and well maintained, some elevation and hills.
Course is over-rated
For how much they advertise and charge during regular time, I wouldn't step foot here. The overall layout of the course was great, except once you get to the greens, they are all chewed up with ball marks and dead spots making putting more of a challenge. Secondly there is no sand in the bunkers whatsoever. How this course charges $80-100+ is beyond me. Luckily I only paid $40.
Playing with a vendor
The up and down feature going away and towards the club house was interesting. The par 5's were long and challenging. Many of the par 4 holes looked and played like other par 4 holes already played. The overall condition was good with some room for improvement on the greens. The rate was a little too pricy.
Great Layout; Poor Condition
The only thing giving this course 2 stars instead of 1 is the fact that layout was fantastic. However, the course was in terrible condition. The greens were in brutal shape, dead patches and choppiness through out. The clear reason why was that it appeared no one repaired their ball marks on this course. It made for a terrible putting experience as balls hopped, skipped and jumped all over the place. It also made for wildly inconsistent green speeds, which also made putting quite difficult. The fairways were only slight better, being pretty chewed up in parts with unrepaired divot marks and dead patches. Finally, the bunkers were not what one would expect from a course like this. Very coarse, heavy sand and lots of pebbles and rocks. For a club billing themselves as an upscale country club for the public, the conditions were overall, very disappointing.
That said, it was a great, fun layout, winding in and out of a valley. The 1st, 9th, 10th and 18th holes were all quite memorable, playing down, up down and up the hill on which the clubhouse sits. The 13th hole also sticks out in my mind as a great hole. The NYC skyline view from the 10th tee and clubhouse patio is phenomenal.
However, despite the great layout, this is not a track I would recommend nor play again given the poor conditions. And the fact that this course has the gall to charge over $100 on the weekends for a course in this condition is borderline offensive. I'm glad I only paid $55 on GolfNow, a discount off their usual weekday twilight rate of $70.
course not up to the hype on commercials...
After hearing on the radio of the course, i decided to look up the course and book with my dad for my 40th bday. Started out decent, but when i got to the green, there were patches of dirt everywhere. I later asked some of the cart guys what the deal was, and they said it was some fungus destroying some of the greens. That didnt sound good. Its a shame cause it looked decent. But they were doing some construction work on the course, and i almost hit one of the workers who was working on the bunkers. Not the greatest experience. The only pleasant part of the course was the bartender katie. But no cart person selling drinks on the course... just didnt seem like a country club. Sad to say but rivervale was a whole lot better, and closer. And even patriot hills... and those courses were cheaper than nu country club. These guys better get their act together and fix this course quick or they will go bankrupt quickly....
greens gone bad
Normally a nice course but the greens were in bad shape. That being said the pace of play was terrific
I would wait till next year until the greens come back before playing it again
It is a good course to play on a weekday!
I like this course as it is an easy drive from NYC. I usually play on a weekday a few times in a year and avoid the weekend busy and slow play. For this round, the course conditions were fine except for a few greens which were really in bad shape. The facilities are always top notch and I would recommend this course for everyone.
green Condition
Green is not at a good condition since some of it was up and down. means the green is not smooth .
My county club
I've played this course many times the greens were you not up to their usual standards
