St. Helens Golf Course was established in 1959 and has been operated by the current ownership for 12 years. The course is immaculately kept by a small crew of dedicated people who all have a stake in its success. It is one of the last "secret gems" left in the Greater Portland area, is a good test for even the best of golfers, and is a mere 35 minutes from downtown. The fees are a bargain - a refreshing change for those people who are tired of spending $50 or more for a round of golf.

Although some players tend to consider 9-hole courses less than worthy of their time and money, this one can change your opinion. Accomplished players will be suprised by the challenge the course poses - it's real defense being the quick, contoured greens - while the average golfer will not be faced with the disheartening task of playing yet another golf course that prides itself solely on its length. We are far enough away from the city to offer old-fashioned professional service to our customers. There are no blow horns or traffic cops here: our marshals help you look for your ball, not just tell you that you need to hurry up and find it.

Great maintenance improvements

This course is much improved from earlier this year as they
have invested in new mowing equipment and additional
staff. A nice country course with great scenery and nice
fair greens.

Good for family time

I hadn't played this course in three years and was hoping that conditions on the course might have been improved since my last visit, unfortunately they had not.
I played with my 11 year old son, and it was a good value at $50 for 18 and a cart.
I think this course it perfect for these sort of outings as the cost is low and my son had a great time, just getting out to play.

This course on a weekend is no deal.

With the state this course is in I would say it needs a lot of work if they want more to play on the weekend, the tee boxes are in need of help and the fairways in need of a lot of care to really be more playable and the greens were over watered.

Intersting terrain makes up for untidy course

Staff was perfectly friendly. The whole course is a bit run down. The fairways are cut long... longer than the fringe at an average course. Weeds everywhere. It's certainly not worth the drive from Portland for 16 dollars. There are many similar quality or better course 1/4 of the distance for the same price range ($15-20). The only significant positive is the interesting terrain, consisting of hills, doglegs and challenging placements of trees and bunkers.

Hidden Gem

This has got to be one of the best values for the money. I believe cost is kept low due to the remote location. I started playing this course before they built the back 9 and think they only had 6 or 7 holes originally. This course is layed out on a hillside and many find it difficult to walk - they do have carts. The course itself is not overly challenging as long as you are hit fairways; otherwise, say good bye to your golf balls. The first hole's tee box gives you an idea of what you are in for...it tees off 50-75 ft above the fairway on a dog-leg right. Those who are brave try to cut it and only those with 250+ drives prove to be successful. This is a great course and i give it a top 10 value of all courses played in the Northwest.
