Heron Lakes Golf Club - Greenback Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Club is home to two championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the Great Blue Course and the Greenback Course. Both utilize the rugged natural terrain in different ways, offering challenges that will appeal to both low and high handicappers. The Greenback Course is a versatile parkland layout that is gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. It is a less demanding design than the Great Blue but it still has plenty of challenges in store. There are 86 bunkers framing the elevated greens and six ponds come into play throughout however the mature trees present the most prominent threat. The par 3s on this golf course can be especially tough. The more challenging elements are nicely balanced by large, inviting greens and generous landing areas.

Another nice gem near portland
This was a great experience on a challenging course, and it’s a public park course. Great staff and marshals kept the pace on time. We got thanked for being ahead of pace at the turn. Plenty of time for a bite to eat and drink at the turn. Great little restaurant with friendly staff. The course was in good shape for spring time and the greens were cut close and in great shape. I only had to repair a few errant ball marks on the greens, just a habit I was thought at an early age. Keep up the good work Portland parks!
Course in need of maintenance
Fairways need sand in divots. I used both sand containers in the first five holes, refilled on the turn, and then again in the next three holes on the back. Sand traps are actually water hazards and it hasn’t rained in a week. Greens were good, but seems that no one repairs divots. I repaired probably 4 on every green. Pace of play was good in 4 hours 15 minutes. Cart girl is awesome. Staff is very friendly and the starter was the best.
Carts on the course
I have played Heron Lakes many many times.
It is not one of the better draining courses.
But the fact that they allow carts on the course in wet conditions is ridiculous.
We had one person with our group who was in a cart and driving in places that the cart got stuck a few times and making ruts all over the place.
If you are going to allow carts please stick to the cart path only until May-June.
The carts are making the course unplayable.
Great round of golf.
Really enjoyed my round of golf. The pace of play was great and the course wasn’t in too bad of shape. Still a little moist out on the fairways but the greens were rolling well.
Bunkers had a lot of water in them and not playable. It hadn't rain for a while but course had extemely wet areas it was a challenge just to move forward at times.
Went at 3:10 tee time in early October and pace of play was so slow had to call it on the 13th as Sun was setting. But course was gorgeous and really want to come back! Just probably won’t pick afternoon on one of the last nice days of the year lol
Course was in good condition
The pace of play started off slow due to others not playing ready golf. Other than that everything was very smooth
Just Too Slow
I really want to like this golf course. I've played it four times I think. And from what I can tell Golf in the Portland/Vancouver area near the state lines is just difficult to find value. A lot of the courses are nine whole courses, and a majority of those courses in the entire area have an unfamiliar amount of walking golfers. Maybe it's just me, but on the East Coast we are not used to 75% of the golfers walking. For us it's more like 90% of the golfers are in the cart. so I'm really struggling to give a fair evaluation because it's so unfamiliar to me. But the course layout and the course itself is good. You play a lot of holes that run side-by-side and perpendicular, which is fine because it allows you a little bit of room to miss. But waiting on every single shot for an entire day was just too much for me to enjoy. I think the golfers in front of me actually played at a pretty good pace, considering they were walking. But four minutes to get to their ball and then start a shot process was just too much. Maybe I'm jealous because I'm too lazy to walk 18 holes. The clubhouse and amenities are very very basic. Nothing extra but most everything you need is there. Maybe 30 years out of date. if there was a time of day restriction on walking or carts, maybe it would help. But just parking at this facility is an absolute disaster. There are cars parked on top of the curbs, pulled up on the piles of sand, parked in every possible location you can put a vehicle, they have cars parked in this place. It is a free-for-all but honestly, in the area there aren't a lot of 18 hole public golf courses to play. So this becomes one of the few options.
also, I did not love that I booked the teatime on Golf now at somewhere around $50 and then when I got there, they asked me if I was wanting a cart and then charge me another 15 or so dollars. I guess it's my fault for assuming that in 2025 playing golf in green fees covered utilizing a cart. I'm sure there was some fine print that I missed. But on 99% of my other bookings, that's not even a consideration. A little bit of a cheap shot in the financials i think.
But this is probably a $40 $50 golf course in most areas of the country. $65 to ride while everyone else is walking and play a five hour round of golf is just not what anyone is looking for.
Greenback Conditions
The Greenback wa in remarkable shape for the amount of play it gets. Some tees were pretty raggedy and should mget sanded and seeded at leawst twice a week. Greens were awesome. I fixed at least five fresh ballmarks on every green, but with the large size of the greens this isnt bad.
Always Reliable
Solid course for $ and greens were smooth and quick!
Hot day golf
Even though it was extremely hot, we all had a great time. The greens were clean and fast.
Good Course
It’s a well maintained public course with really fast greens. The traps could use some work thouhh
Great layout, challenging
We came from Texas to play here. The course layout was the best part of the course. Very challenging and different hole layouts made it interesting. The greens were very fast which was also was a great opportunity to try to score well. I would recommend this to other golfers for the price.
